In my last year of university majoring in something very much not music, checked the score of this out from the library and put myself to the task of learning to read music. I didn’t get as far as you have here but the experience was revelatory in the same way the visualization is here

I like the non split version better. Both are cool, but this format is a bit much to follow. Love the channel!

      Thanks for the input.
I thought about separating the videos for each instrument so that people could also hear the sounds separately, but I was wondering if anyone would want to watch them.

I love this channel. Of all the attempts to show what music 'looks like', this has got to be top of the list.

I like this version a lot. It demonstrates the lateral thinking that IMO is so characteristic of Reich's middle period (1971-1988). It also makes the rhythmic constructions much clearer to the eye.

      Thank you for your comment.
I would also like to pursue visualization of Reich's melody and harmony.

@@smalldotsensemble2058 If that so, may I suggest (and this is just a suggestion) using three dimensions? Like in the following piece: th-cam.com/video/4bUGblD5sqs/w-d-xo.html.
IMO, in Reich's music the pitch aspects (melody, tonality, harmonic operations) and the temporal aspects (rhythmic patterns, augmentations, and transpositions relative to the the bar line) are semi-independent; so it makes sense to think of them as shapes moving in two different dimensions, the accumulative synthesis of which is projected onto a third one.

Eight Lines, or Octet when I had it on vinyl in the early 1980s on an ECM recording (I think) - and not having known of it's revision as Eight Lines for a long time, is my all time favorite work of any genre, which is simplistic and naive to say I know. The Dots version here, I generally like but for the winds, which don't seem to translate well as electronic blips and beeps.

      Thank you for your comment.
The first time I heard Eight Lines was on a Nonesuch recording.
It was also the first sheet music I bought.
I love Octet on ECM, too.

Amazing... Although I must admit that seeing it written for the first time after almost 40 years of just listening to it, my conception of where "1" was, is now shattered. (same with Electric Counterpoint) :)

      Thank you for watching.
I am glad if my video helped you to enjoy Reich's music more.
