Prof. Dr. Michael Fardis: From the first to the second generation of Eurocode 8

Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SAEE) organized the online lecture entitled “From the first to the second generation of Eurocode 8 for seismic design of concrete buildings" that was held on 25.5.2022. The lecturer was Dr Michael N. Fardis, Professor Emeritus at the Civil Engineering Department, University of Patras, Greece.
Abstract:
The evolution of Eurocode 8 from the first to the second generation as European Standard combines a major expansion in the scope of the seismic design provisions for concrete buildings with bold steps towards simplification, practicality, ease of use, and economy. The overall design concept is becoming more rational, with a move towards transparent performance-based design and away from arbitrary prescriptive rules. Major changes in the provisions for the design of structural walls, especially for shear, will allow wider and more economic application of wall systems or wall-equivalent dual ones for earthquake resistance of medium- to high-rise concrete buildings. Comparative application to representative examples of such buildings will highlight the differences between the two generations of Eurocode 8 and demonstrate the advantages offered by the forthcoming second generation.
