What I miss the most about Proxmox is some way to automatically / declaratively install new bare-metal nodes and configure them. I want to be able to boot a new machine from PXE, where it goes into an "enlisting" mode, then configure it from a UI or configuration files, and then have it automatically install itself and join itself to the cluster. The configuration done in the UI should be written to a YAML, JSON or TOML file that could be versioned. I feel PDM is the right place to implement this functionality.
Proxmox supports automated installation using an toml answer file, fetched from the iso or from a url pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Automated_Installation it can also be configured to run a post-install script, which would do the cluster joining
Other workaround for migrating accross clusters is to have a shared storage for the vm disks and copy the vm config over to another host on the other cluster. If you need to change the network settings, you can do that on the other cluster. Then simple shutdown the vm on the old cluster and start it on the new one.
That's what i do.... but I’m only moving between two node.... testing and production. I doubt I’ll set this up for my use case, but i can see that it would be very useful in a bigger environment.
This seems like perfect timeing. I've been trying to figure out how to best manage VMs and containers across multiple physical locations. I wonder if there are other good tools that allow that functionality that are farther along in development
For us older farts that are starting to have issues with seeing things with dark backgrounds, dark mode can take a long walk off a short pier!! 😆 Lets see how bright i can turn up my monitor so i can see your screen now.
I just want to say how much I love this channel. No hype marketing BS. Just pure technical bliss.
Love the Jeff Geerling shirt!
7:15 You can also migrate between clusters or remote nodes from the command line with qm remote-migrate

@@apalrdsadventures any plans to do a video on this? It's the first time I've heard of it and it sounds really useful.
I could, I'll add it to my todo list
Very hyped now :D

That used to be my go to for inter cluster migrations
cross-cluster migration is such a nice add
Great video!!!
thank you for the quick review , seems we need a bit more time for more individual features
I’m glad they’re releasing it as is now, but I like running beta software

They’re working on it. Definitely not complete yet though.
Native host node backups is my biggest request for the Proxmox folks.
Is there a need to backup any host files which are not part of /etc/pve (which is already replicated across the cluster)?
There is a qm cli command to do remote cluster migration even works live.
I'd really like to be able to change the vmid without the backup/delete/restore hoops.
could you please normalize the audio in the post editing? its hard to follow on a laptop with speakers

For us even older farts - remember the yellow/green terminals? The original dark mode 🤣
