- Himars vs Tornado-S - So, between the American HIMARS and the Russian Tornado-S, which one is more superior? HIMARS, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is compatible with various precision munitions with ranges ranging from 9 miles to 310 miles. This includes the complete Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) munitions suite, such as the Extended-Range Guided MLRS, Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). The Tornado-S is a significant improvement of the Soviet-made BM-30 Smerch multiple rocket launcher. It was introduced into the Russian military in 1987. It is built on a Russian MZKT MAZ-543 8x8 truck with the rocket launcher station positioned at the back of the chassis and consists of 12 tubes. The system contains a rocket launcher vehicle as well as a replenishment vehicle for more ammunition. The Tornado-S has a satellite-guided firing system, with the antenna on the roof of the launch cabin behind the driver's cab. It can launch guided and unguided rockets such as the 9M544 and 9M549 as well as unguided rockets such as the 9M555K, 9M55K1, 9M55F, 9M55S, 9M55K6, 9M525, 9M528, 9M529, 9M531, and 9M533. The new Tornado-S offers improved capabilities as a precision weapon with the use of guided rockets. Hence, it now has an increased firing range and improved accuracy by up to 15 times. The weapon has a greater maximum range of 74.5 miles and can impact an area larger than 60 hectares by assigning different flight paths to each shell. In addition, the system can fire individual rockets or launch a barrage from its 12 tubes to several targets while moving the launcher vehicle. It is aimed to target enemy personnel, military equipment, both stationary and mobile targets, and multiple targets.

I've seen the use of tornado lately in some videos and the blast is 3 times bigger and deadlier..
330mm vs. 227 mm diameter and Smerch/Tornado warheads are much longer i.e. heavier.
the tornado is better because they are describing: larger caliber, double the number of tubes, same precision and range...
The missiles with the longest range of the himars, reduce their load to 2 tubes and their range is similar to another Russian system, the Iskander, which in turn has + payload.
Bigger is not better. Oversized describes every Russian weapon ever made except their under-protected tanks.

@@leonardoandresfacello3941 The Iskander weighs 3800kg compared to 1600kg for ATACMS. The precision strike missile weighs even less (probably 1000kg) and has the same sized warhead as ATACMS. The accuracy of GLONAS is not as good as differential GPS the US has developed. 2m or less accuracy. Like I said Russian crap is usually just big not better. Tornado-S is a nice size to intercept. I think our tanks will do fine compared to Russian Soviet era death traps designed for mass Russian kamikaze missions. They have excellent mobility over rough ground and emphasis crew survivability, protection and precision.

Soviet tanks were made with crew survivability in mind as much as NATO tanks, with different approaches:
-Soviet: small turrets x lower profile. That is why they have an automatic loader and one less crew member.
-nato: large turrets but + armored (lateral)
- the fronts are = armored

Tornado-S for the win, it's got at least the same range and accuracy and twice the payload. HIMARS is GPS guided while the Tornado-S uses Glonass and we still haven't seen NATO effectively jamming that. HIMARS was the Bayraktar TB-2 of ground artillery until the Russians dialed it in, maybe not as useless as those silly drones but certainly less effective. Like that time a SU-27 took a piss on a Reaper, that was just funny, call it unsafe all you want but at the end of the day you've got piss on your face and people like me think it's funny. Bayraktar TB-2 were effective in 2022 while Russia was trying to occupy Kyiv. How do you think Ukraine stopped thousands of Russian armor vehicles? Barraktar, Javelin and NLAW. On some roads near Kyiv, there are still burnt Russian armor vehicles standing.

Himars is actually much more deadly. It can fire atacms that has range of almost 200 miles. That is much better than Tornado-s with 74.5 miles max range.

Apples to oranges. The XM1140A1 HIMARS truck compares directly to the 9A54-4 Tornado-S KamAZ-63501 8×8. It is important because they both carry 6 missiles and can have all their missiles reloaded as a package / magazine.
The Tornado-S mssile is 2.5 times bigger than the GMLRS missile. That ensures it is not "High Mobility" at all. It can't be transported in a C130 sized aircraft for instance. The HIMARS Vehicle is easier to hide on the battlefield and the Tornado-S harder to transport. The range of Tornado--S missiles is a little more but shortly ER-GMLRS will match its range and GLSDB will exceded its warhead weight. ATACMS and in future the Precision Strike Missile will be be lanched from HIMARS.

They are both excellent but HIMARS impact has been almost nullified by Pantsyr and TOR, initially it hit, now every now and then it hits mostly civilian targets, today they used it to shoot at trenches and one Grad launcher. And its true that artillery can't effectively fight it because it leaves too fast, but Lancet is countering it well, they need couple of recon drones to find it and then Lancet is launched and destroys it, still this is not an easy task, because you have to cover a huge area ... anyway its interesting to watch it, it would suck to be on the receiving end of any of these.

If you want pinpoint accurate rocket fire at specific target you go HIMARS. If you want to “unalive” a large swat of area you go Tornado
a problem with Tornado is 6:03. Himars can load there own cartridge it has a build in crane. a truck can drop a cartridge of at a random place and himars picks it up when it needs to. quick and easy.

Most people misunderstood about russian capacity for building a weapon. People tend to expect russian products only behind the USA in term of quality mainly because Russia is "superpower" due to nuclear weapons it has in store. This kind of superpower doesn't makes russian capable of invented a better weapons than non superpower countries, but it just a terms inherit from soviet union that passed down to Russia. Besides, nuclear power considered as exclusive club that enjoy only by a few countries. I believe there's more advanced countries in the world have the capacity to build such nuke. If they can, should you considered them as superpower as well? Back to missile comparison, I'm sure American made missile much better than russian counterpart. Any western countries also capable doing thing better than russian. For example, Germany, Sweden, Spain and even Turkey. Are those superpower nations like Russia? Of course not..but they are more capable than russia. There's a prove to that, turkish UAV bayraktar gave russian a lot of trouble in Ukraine war. What happened to russia superpower? HIMARS is more capable and successful compared to Russian Tornado-S. Also still Western microprocessor based precision systems are better than their Russian counterparts. But this situation is changing rapidly to Russian favour. It seems Russia is determined and nothing going to stop Russia from achieving its objectives in Ukraine. Only one action can stop them that are deploying NATO’s total capabilities including soldiers in Ukraine. But NATO is not going to do that. First: HIMARS is nothing remarkable - it's NEAT system in tradtion of US Marine Corps, on which order it has been created. Key letters are 'HIM' - HIgh Mobility - strategic and tactica. SMALL, mobile in terrain and transportable by relatively small vehicles. HIMARS equivalent would be 6-8 Uragan missiles on smaller truck/chassis. Tornado-S is more like poor-man's ATACMS.

@onevablo1692 Two completely different systems. Iskander is not fired from an MLRS system. So let's only compare MLRS systems. And second Iskander reload time is 16 minutes. Where as HIMARS reload time is 4 minutes. So this is between Tornado-S and HIMARS. ATACMS can be fired from HIMARS with a range of about 180-190 miles. But Tornado-S can't fire Iskander. Tornado-S has a range of 72 miles. And HIMARS is getting PrSM with a range of 300 miles.

I'm curious as to why the Tornado S, if so good, hasn't been having a bigger impact on the war? This is the first I have heard of it while the HIMARS has been all over the news. Also, can we really believe the numbers that Russia gives for performance? Don't forget, everything they have is supposed to be as good or better than what we have in America. For example, the SU57, according to Russia, is better than any other 5th Gen in the world.

a lot of Russian equipment is pretty good, and would be a worthy addition to the Western militaries, with some modifications. When Russia becomes a stable democracy, then perhaps the West can help with modifications for the Russian military. But that will not be for years.

I like how people are only comparing them directly. Both are completely useless without intel. The West has far superior Intel which will make the HIMARS much for effective. Even though Russia may have way more Tornado's vs Ukraine's HIMARS, I bet the average HIMARS crew is getting way more tasks to target per day compared to the crews in the Tornado. HIMARS is more focused on efficiency and the power of US intelligence:)
