- Eight is a lucky number in Chinese because Fa(fortune) and Ba(8) are same sound in Cantonese and other regional dialects. Lucky Eight Horses has been a favorite theme in Chinese painting. I did this in a CNY's festival at a local mall to repress my good wishes for the Year of Rabbit. The title says "Eight Stallions".
In the beginning, I was thinking to do all the horses racing forward as seen in most "eight horse" Chinese paintings, but I made the second horse backward accidentally, so I changed my mind to set them the ranch instead.

Henry...the magic of your artistry becomes even more obvious when shown faster...incredible.
Thanks for sharing it.
I really love the process and the result. I love drawing horses, and i love learning about different techniques for drawing them.The speed and movement in this painting represents to me the speed and quick movements of a horse, the very essence of what a horse is. I am so impressed.
Love your brush work, and you must know horses very well.
Thank you!

Your paintings are just awsome and inspires me very much !!!
Wonderful! I also have an interest in the magnet's that hold the paper in place,
Thank you for another great video and answering my questions. I've been following you for several years now on You Tube, have learned a great deal from you and have so much more to learn. I enjoy your work immensely. I continue to wish you and yours the greatest happiness and success.
Wonderful Henry!
I also have an interest in the magnet's that hold the paper in place,
Interesting that Henry doesn't require the paper to be perfectly smooth and pulled tight. You can ridges and lines in the paper. That is amazing.
+Z Sassington It is true that I don't care the paper is perfect flat or not. You may even paint on crumpled paper. We do require that AFTER the painting is done in the mounting process, either dry or wet mounting, before framing. Thanks for your comments!
@dinasaur2 I bought those magnets from Henry's on-line store & they work very well with a magnetic white board covered in felt for supporting the rice paper.
Wonderful!
@jasneskis Thank you for following me on TH-cam. BTW, you may also follow me on facebook with my old and recent painting gallery. Happy painting!
Es acrilico o acuarela, gracias muy buenos sus trabajos....saludos Hernán de Perú
@seatli Thanks for your comments!
@blueheronarts Shall do! Thank you.
Wonderful Henry!
I also have an interest in the magnet's that hold the paper in place, Which type of paper are you using here? Rice paper or Mullberry?
It is hard to paint in public in a mall. Good for you! for showing Americans our love of our painting. (By the way, up above..." repress" is to hide your feelings deep inside..."express" is to share your feelings...just trying to help you a bit here. I know I make tons of mistakes myself. ha ha)
Thanks, Barbara! I will to doing this again at the Americana at Brand this weekend to celebrate the new year of the horse.
good paintings
I would love to know what the Chinese writing is at the bottom of the video, is it notes reminding you what to put into the painting? Is it notes reminding you how to approach the horses and where their placement should be? Maybe it has nothing to do with the painting at all? I always prefer when you speak during your videos explaining what is happening and/or your though process. Great video.
@jasneskis The calligraphy on the lower-left corner is inscription on another dolphin painting I did earlier. Please search for "A Sumi and Watercolor Painting with 2 Dolphins Kissing" and you will see. I was by a very noisy stage when I did this demo. I sort of develop the painting as it immerges in the painting process. Sometimes, idea comes after I put some color randomly. BTW, I will do a step-by-step class for beginners this summer at artfulgathering(dot)com. Thanks!
@dinasaur2 Please check the materials List in video description. The paper I used is called "Semi-sized Xuan Rice Paper" which is inexpensive but very good for beginners of ricve paper painting.
Thanks!
i'd prefer more slow video, but anyway the painting is excellent!!!

We have 8galloping horses printed in a mirror... would like to know what would be the right position in placing this one? is it the horses facing going out or the horses are going inside? currently, these horses image are placed in our living room facing to our door... keep me posted. thanks!
Which direction is "arriving" is good I suppose. :-)
