Finally I could see this Weston documentary which eluded me for years! I read about the existence of this Willard Van Dyke film but I thought it was lost. On 1970 I came across his modest home at Wildcat Hill after visiting Ansel Adams at his Carmel home. More than a photographer he was the founder of a new way of seeing. His "peppers", "excusados", "shells and "nudes" reveal an extraordinary visual perception of the real world. Genius is an appropriate word in his case. Thank you so much for this experience...

So glad you found it. I live just a few miles from where they were.

I really love the large camera view! "Not here, not here, but here is a thing of beauty" - with the movement, as well as aperture value comparison with doors and the rock or filter on the sky. Nowadays we got used to those but I really admire execution back then.

Adams and Weston... yep probably my 2 biggest inspirations in black & white photography. Adams for his scientfic approach towards photography (zone system etc), and Weston for the composition.

To make the image sharp from front to back not only is achieved by closing the diaphragm down but moving the lens board first then moving the diaphragm smaller.

My father got his own 8 x 10 camera when his was my age. Now I'm researching photographers to get inspiration to go shoot my own 8x10 film

Once you suffer through the overblown narration and unnessessary dramatic strings in the background its a great watch :-)

Wow. The voice-over is a guy who did literally hundreds of educational movies in the 50s and 60s.

I think one possible name is Doty Weston Thompson. She was born in 1923 so she would have been 25 years old when the film was made. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dody_Weston_Thompson

    Sad thing.
