After Kmart, the building was the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP) initiative of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to fulfill prescriptions for American Veterans.
If that is the one across from the naval hospital then that was the spot man...back in the day. I was a kid, but it wasnt that big...but a very popular shopping place. The blue-light specials happened a lot and were such a new and exciting experience, My neighbor, a retired navy chief who loved to fish, had a bag of fish-heads stolen out of his car in that parking lot. He was gonna throw them in a dumpster, but laughed and said he would have loved to see their face when they opened that bag.
The lean to roof that was in that corner of the auto center and barbed wire has recently collapsed. That roof area was for the outdoor break area of the CMOP employees. I was just over there a few days ago and was surprised to see it collapsed.
Directly to the left of the Kmart across McMillan was a shopping center called Shipwatch Square, one of the earliest in the area I believe. It was already declining in the 1990s and was torn down years ago.
Not gonna lie, I miss the old school wind breaker brickworks. Kinda curious if you've checked out the abandoned one in walterboro. It's been abandoned for many years and is next to the collection country public defenders office and the good finds pawn shop. There's also a bowling alley right there and a dollar general nearby. Those places are still open, but there is also an abandoned pizza hut if you take a right at the light onto Jeffery's hwy off 17alt. There's also a gas station right there, but I forget if it was called stop and go or corner store. As far as csl plasma goes it's a place to donate plasma which is extracted from blood. I used to donate plasma at adma. Kinda debating on doing that again actually. Anyway, nice video, I I recognize that place. Live love and laugh my man, and stay safe out there.
4:00-4:05 yes that's correct there was also another Kmart in the area (that was store #3101) that also closed in 1994 and both locations were indeed replaced by that Super Kmart Center that opened in 1994 and closed in 2017
Near those two roll up garage doors, a few months ago they had stacks of wood pallets from the CMOP with government stamps. The pallets were available for people to take for free, there was a sign saying to please take as many as you want for free.
There were two container dumpsters in the fenced garden center area for a while when they were removing stuff from the CMOP operations and recently removed.
Excellent video man!! Love the new intro! Man I still miss going to Kmart. It’s still hard to believe it’s been 5 years since my childhood Kmart closed now. :(
did you know the palmetto state armory in Summerville off highway 78 used to be a Kmart because after hurricane Hugo they had to close it because Hugo destroyed the whole store witch forced it to close
That Kmart (Summerville(Hwy 78, not Ladson Rd.) which was built originally as a Grants, with a Big Star next door), along with the one on Northwoods Blvd(where Lowe’s is now), this one on Rivers, the one in goose creek and the one in Moncks Corner all closed in 1995 when they downsized the Charleston stores and opened the Super Kmart later that year on Halloween. This Kmart looked identical to the one on Savannah highway with the grocery store on the right. It closed in 2005ish if I remember.
One of the nails in the coffin for that location was when Hugo hit in 1989, and the store was massively looted as the storm moved up north of us. A shame really. It was never really the same after that. I believe it closed in 2017 because it was one of the under performing stores on their hit list.
They dramatically changed the quality of k - mart in Australia , they used to sell rifles and ammo , when I was a kid , quality car stereo gear and auto stuff , not cheap Chinese crap , they also had good diners here, last one closed about 1995 . First k - mart opened in the Inner east suburbs, Melbourne, Vic , Australia , 1967 . Pretty sure they don't have the garden department anymore either . K- mart is open 24 / 7 , seven days a week.

Zack, your videos keep on getting better and better. I miss Kmart. I visited this one several years ago.

Great video
A viewer on one of my visits here said the grocery store was a “Big Star” grocer

That KMart was open in the 90s, so it must have reopened after Hugo
