you can check out TUNIC on Steam here: bit.ly/Materwelonz-TUNIC second part of this first look will be up in a few days! so far this foxy adventure is kinda addicting… 🦊
When I was a kid, I used to play a ton of flash games in English, and since English is not my first language and I was still very much a beginner, I understood maybe 1/3 of what was being said and had to piece together the rest. Tunic's language system is giving me the same vibe, and I love it!
I've heard somewhere that a pretty similar experience gave Miyazaki's inspiration for the Dark Souls series. He used to read books in English and couldn't understand anything, so he pieced everything together as best he could from the pictures, which gave him the idea of environmental story telling for his series.
Me too, but my favourites were 2D Zelda and point and click adventures, so getting that experience again of having to piece together clues, getting stumped, trying everything and then finally having breakthroughs is something to treasure.
00:45 That's too modest for someone who beat 3 pantheons 13:08 The plot unveiled 29:42 Now, that's Souls for beginners 36:38 Gonna be my favorite moment
I love love love love it when let’s players just say EVERYTHING they’re thinking. Watching them put all the pieces in place, and make connections in their mind in real time. It makes me so excited to see when they have epiphanies ^w^
I played this over the course of a week upon release, a little a day, and enjoyed it so much. It is probably one of my favorite games this year (...and it has already been a great year). It's good to see Finji sponsoring channels to play the game... ᶦᵗ ʷᵒᵘˡᵈ ᵇᵉ ᵃ ᵍᵒᵒᵈ ᶠᵘˡˡ ˡᵉᵗ'ˢ ᵖˡᵃʸ *ʳᵘⁿˢ*
The language in runes and the game manual reminds a lot of the "old days" when you could play emulated japanese games / jrpgs but without understanding a word of japanese lol even the aesthetic of the manual, the fonts & the text frames are similar. Looks really good so far, looking forward to the next part!
As someone who likes souls-like games, it is very cool to see a novice figure out how to do well in combat from first principles. I love how quickly you figured out the "being cautious and evasive is better than mashing" principle. It's fun to watch you improve!
7:52 that's an impressively stunning door opening animation. As far as first impressions go, what a beautiful game. Very cutesy, very soft. Completely opposite of the gameplay difficulty lol. Those tags on Steam weren't kidding, this is DEFINITELY... a Zelda game. A Zelda souls-like. Extremely pumped to see you play more of this!
I think you genuinely are more scared of souls-likes than you ought to be. You are better at this than you think. Really enjoying the look of this game and it also looks fun
@@zipzapzipzap6859 Probably a 1:2 split. Dark Souls was a lot harder for people to adjust to ten years ago before tons of other games took inspiration from it, so the difficulty probably seems very overblown by today's standards. The backseating in FromSoft games is still horrible though. People were backseating Elden Ring streams on Day 1, before anyone had a firm grasp of how that game changed the usual Souls mechanics. It was bizarre to see.
@@Roronoa2zoro I think part of it might also be that "Modern Souls" is refined compared to the original. Like, the same basic ideas, but certain instances of "accidental" difficulty due to jank (as opposed to very intentionally designed difficulty) are... perhaps not gone, but certainly much reduced. Elden Ring is perhaps the most approachable FromSoft title ever. But TUNIC is not FromSoft and so hopefully it doesn't have quite such an angry fanbase attached. (Not that The Entire Fandom is a monolith by any means, but whenever anything becomes a large scale phenomenon, the loudest and worst people become an unfortunately ever less ignorable group)
@@Kram1032 I doubt tunic has an angry fanbase. Theres no jackass multiplayer mechanics, and no abusive gameplay/marketing that I know of. When you understand that 'souls fans' are just videogame maga it makes more sense.
I have to say, after watching your HK playthrough, you're way above average gamer. As an abysmal gamer, who loves souls games, I can say for sure, you'll do wonderfully in souls game. If you're worried about difficulty, it's unwarranted. If they don't interest you, it's entirely other matter then.
You may have realized this already but many times it's easier to circle your enemy --- after they flash (in prep for an attack) they don't change their attack direction
Oh dude tunic is baller the sound and the atmosphere was great. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Should be a piece of cake for a pro gamer god like Materwelonz xD
Yeah I definitely think you can expect the early game of this game to be easier than something like Hollow Knight. I've heard there's a couple difficulty spikes later down the line, but a lot of the game is about discovering hidden secrets and finding those secret paths like the one you found later in the forest.

Tunic is definitely game of the year, in my honest opinion. Even tho I'm not playing it, because I don't play those kind of games, it's easily one of the top 3 games in last couple of years for me, for what I have seen so far. 😊
Well the enemies respawn after you rest, that's kinda Souls-like. On the other hand, I saw a symbol of three circles with the colours of the Triforce pieces (blue, green, red). Plus the cutesy art style does remind me of the Switch version of Link's Awakening.
I think what makes it "Souls-Like" is - the way checkpoints, deaths and respawns, including replentishing certain consumables work - the way they are using stamina (and probably also magic) Not that souls games were necessarily the first to do all of that, but they quite consistently center around and build on those basic mechanics. But yes, the Zelda vibes are strong too. Specifically this feels, perhaps ironically, more old school 2D Zelda than modern 2 or 3D Zelda. It feels very retro like that, and that's clearly intentional, right down to how the manual tells you everything you need whereas "the game as such" (if you imagine not having that manual) is kinda cryptic and gives very little in the way of explanation. As such I think it captures quite well how it was to play a, like, NES game as a kid who barely learned to read. It may also be roughly as hard (for adults) as these games felt at that young age.
I just bought this game, thanks for bringing it to my attention! It's so good and I'm HOOKED so far! And yeah, I'm on board with everyone else telling you not to be so hard on yourself for your gaming skills haha. I've cleared Hades on 32 heat with all weapons and you STILL dodge his circle swing better than me....
I'm in the middle of a playthrough now. Promise not to get ahead of me. 😁 The game get's pretty tricky as you progress. Also, the fox is dressed in a tunic like Link from Zelda, so I assume that's the namesake. The little pink scarf is a reference to A link to the Past. In that game, Link's hair is colored a shade of pink, rather than it's typical brown or blonde.
THIS GAME FINALLY RELEASED ON PS5! I get to play alongside you noww:)). (Ofc me being more ahead cause spoilers heh) would you ever play a true “souls like” welonz? I’d love to listen to your analysis/decryption of the lore and how you size up to (ik you’ll do great!). KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK: ]
"For some reason it kinda makes me feel like I'm reading Korean. Maybe it's just because I can't read Korean." I can read Hangeul (Korean alphabet) and the shapes of this alphabet are kinda reminiscent of it. Unsurprisingly, none of them really match though. Personally, it makes me feel like I'm reading Aztec. Maybe that's just because I can't read Aztec 😅
I quite like cute art style and simplified 3D models of game world.🌲 Astral plane is very intriguing.👻 Also there is very nice ambient music. It's fun to watch you play but I wouldn't play it myself because my gaming skills and soul-like games are inherently incompatible😓 I'll keep watching though
welonz: plays the entire mass effect 1,2,3 in one go, increasing the difficulty everytime as the game progresses; plays the god of war and finishes every side mission like a god-boss she is, remembers the tinest of details, defeats the hollowkinght spinny things and explores the deepnest like a champ also welons: im not super good....whaa? you are awesommee
