Oh, Malcolm. I cannot tell you how timely this was for me. I was literally whining about how I cannot find many resources that tell us these kind of tips and fixes, minutes ago. The most difficult thing for me is taking what is in my head and translating it to the canvas. It makes me want to give up or feel like I should be a "natural" like so many others. I have been enjoying your videos for a while, now, and try to paint loosely but, I always end up becoming obsessed with detail. I can't wait to go back to my canvas and take this information with me. Thank you and happy new year.
amazing video as always. i would love to see a video where you show us your old paintings and show what needs to change in order for it to work. or why it flat out doesnt work.
Superb video, superb description, superb advice, everything spot on! Much respect from an old artist. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post.
@ I’ve taken up painting and writing in the past few years and you’ve been an amazing inspiration - also I’ve just had my first book published. People like you make it possible ❤️
Actually, the paintings that you considered horrible weren't all that bad! LOL My problem is the difficulty I have in removing the cartoonish, flat appearance of my paintings...will take your advice and paint with more spontaneity and not worry so much about wasting paint or supports....Thank you!
hello Malcolm, yes, so many art teachers hold informations and tricks back I realized in many art lessons I took. Do they fear that the students may get better as their teacher?? Therefore I thank the more for your open words and terrific explanations. I have learned so much and so fast from you. You are a fantastic teacher. Thank you. Giselle from Munich/Germany.♥
Thanks for inviting us to the table.
You bet! 😊

I am glad the video helped. It's a common frustration, but don't give up! Let nature be the guide, as Pissarro said.

It's easy to be self-critical and we all do it - just keep on painting the lights and shadows!

Gracias 😊
Do you ever paint over the ones you think are duds? Thanks for all your hard work!
Sometimes, if the surface is not too rough, then it is nicely primed for a new painting.
Listening to the first minute was like hearing my own painting history.....
😄
