If we take the windshield dividing trick as a thumb rule (as you saying it's the trick) then in every cases it can't be applied, sometimes you have to judge according to your viewing and sitting position and other vehicles position.

Noy mandatory u can go anytime jump but make sure to decrease the speed before downshifting or else it will jerk and stop the car
