    I can't agree more. It's a great knife and an even better giveaway. That is very nice of you. The silver alox is classic but I also like some of the colored alox, beautiful pieces of work.

    The Pioneer is my favorite SAK. I own several variations of this SAK! My urban carry is the Pioneer/Soldier and the Pioneer Farmer is my field carry. I carry them in a leather pancake sheath on my belt. I have found this method of carry to be the most comfortable and secure method. Quick access to remove, no velcro or snaps to fumble with. I don’t miss having the scale tools, the tweezers don’t really have the ability to remove a deep splinter or thorn. I can scrape a stinger, thorn or splinter from my skin with the edge of the awl or main blade. Never honesty found much use for the tooth pick.

      I prefer the Alox scales and how streamlined the overall package is. Feels so sturdy and robust, compared to the conventional plastic scales.

    I have had a Soldier since 1983 (basically the same as the Pioneer) and if anything I like it more than when I bought it. Actually my Soldier is a Wenger but when it comes to Soldiers the Victorinox and Wenger are virtually the same as they were made to the same specs. My next purchase will probably be a Pioneer X.

    • @AlphaPews
      @AlphaPews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really love Alox scales. Your soldier sounds awesome and I bet it could tell many cool stories. My Pioneer comes everywhere with me now, as it replaced my Spartan.

    In my humble opinion as a collector & user of the Victorinox Pioneer is that the Pioneer X is the ultimate Gentleman's knife for daily pocket carry however if its an all round multi-purpose PTK ( Pocket Tool Kit ) that you need in your pocket as an EDC then the King of PTK's is the 91mm Huntsman with the 85mm Evolution EvoGrip S17 as a slightly smaller alternative ( Note that its a blade lock knife & therefore not legal in the UK - fortunately I no longer live in the UK ) . My daily carry consists of 1 fixed SAK - the Midnight Manager on my key chain with its useful mini-tools, LED & pen and then I carry as a 2nd knife a Gentleman's knife , either a 93mm Pioneer or Pioneer X, a 111mm Garant ( Nomad version ) or an 84mm Cadet. When I need a PTK then I forgo the Gentleman's knife & carry a modified 91mm Huntsman ( I have 4 in different colours ) with Plus scales, a Firefly ferro rod in place of the toothpick, a tinder spiral on the corkscrew held in place by a mini-screwdriver & a SwissQlip attached for convenient pocket carry.( Alternatively I carry the 85mm EvoGrip S17 ). As for the Spartan , I have 6 collectable versions but never carry one as an EDC as its 'tool deficient' & prior to carrying the Huntsman I was carrying a 91mm Climber ( also with Plus scales ) as my urban EDC of choice for a number of years because it has the scissors like the Pioneer X but eventually I went over to the Huntsman because of the wood saw , scissors, medium sized blade & other tools makes it the most versatile of SAKs and at 4 layers it is still easy to pocket carry .

      This is a great write up Steve, thanks for taking the time. I need a cadet, I love the coloured scales. I do agree that the scissors feature is super handy. Personally I like the slimmer two layer bodies but I carry medical sheers with first aid kit

      @@AlphaPews Happy Wednesday to you AP, I have Liked the page & Subscribed , I am Subscriber #847. I own 3 84mm Cadets, a red, a black & a light blue (the 2020 limited edition -I bought 2 this year when they were on sale - 1 as a collectable & 1 for EDC ) . The Cadet and even the Pioneer/X's fit into the ticket pocket of my jeans & if I am wearing trousers then I carry them in a small Skai ( artificial leather ) slip so they don't get scratched by other things in my pocket. Talking of 2 layers I don't recommend the Compact as an urban EDC , I bought one , its far too overpriced just because it has Plus scales & a scissors & IMO its much better value to buy a Climber ( even though its 3 layers ) & fit it with Plus scales ( it worked out cheaper & I have retro-fitted 3 Climbers with Plus scales ), its got better tools, is not noticeably much wider or heavier & Plus scales come in at least 7 colours ( red, black, green, yellow, white, dark blue, translucent sapphire blue & rubi red ) so you are not stuck just with the 'boring' standard red the Compact comes in.

      @@name5949 Happy Monday William, I have a large collection of Pioneers & Pioneer X's but never bought a Farmer probably because I had already a number of Huntsman with their excellent wood saw & I now also have an 111mm Outrider ( a black scaled pre-2017 model with slide lock ) which has the largest size wood saw in the Victorinox range

    Great video! I had to take the key ring off and it is perfect now. I bought a solo to make a lighter carry and same perfect size but the pioneer made it back into the pocket. The awl is such a valuable tool when you have it. And really missed when you don't. Thank you for making the video.

    lookds like a totally amazing knife...like an ounce of sheer quality in your hand...
    i have the spartan which i use in the kitchen, for opening, bottles, wine, tins, and packaging...amazing tool.
    i have the rambler on my keychain, got scissors, nail file, bottle opener phillips, and flat screw driver and tiny blade...wonderful knife and tiny.
    but i like to carry another knife in my pocket for fruit and stuff,
    this looks like it could be the one i need....i have the climber...but its a 3 layer plastic and a little bulky for pocket carry...
    this pioneer looks like the missing piece of the jigsaw....
    great stuff.

    I carry my Pioneer a lot and give it high marks but for the can opener which to me is totally useless. True, it has a small screwdriver at the can opener tip, but I would rather have a true Phillips head than the combo unit. I do own a proper can opener and a proper cork screw at home and it strikes me as impractical to have those features in a small pocket knife. Other than that, I love the Pioneer.

    When I carry the Pioneer I wish it had a woodsaw.
    But when I carry the Farmer I wish it had a wine opener to impress the ladies around here.
    But when I carry the Camper I wish it had the scissors to impress the ladies around here even more.
    And when I carry the Huntsman I get so pissed of how thick that thing is I go back to the Pioneer.
    It's a conundrum! 😀
    PS: I actually like all of them, plus the Waiter, Spartan and Forester. But it's sooo hard to choose. I also want an Alox Bantam lately. Oh God!!!

    • @AlphaPews
      @AlphaPews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best comment so far! You have good taste good sir. Wood saw is defo useful as are a decent pair of scissors. But Alox all the way. I've seen some custom saks that you can get all of those tools in one three layer knife but they are big bucks. Bit too rich for my daily use and if lost or broken not worth the tears

    I recently bought my first alox knife, the Pioneer X. I lie everything about it except for the damn scales. They're entirely too slippery compared to the celador scales on my Super Tinker. In over 40 years, it's the first mistake I've ever made buying a Victorinox
