  • The Dutch have a special relationship with water. Their delta works, polders and dikes are famous in the whole world.
A significant part of Holland is below sea level. That means that the Dutch have to pump continuously to keep their feet dry.
In spite of the many automated pump houses that were built in the last decades, the old windmills still contribute to the water level in the Netherlands. These characteristic mills beautify the landscape and they are very attractive for tourists all over the world.
This documentary is about one of of these old mills, called 'De Groenvelder', located at the threshold of a small village 'Groenveld' (60 km from Amsterdam). This mill was built around 1560 and still contributes to keeping the polder 'Valkkoog' dry.
It keeps the groundwater on a fixed level which is safe for the foundations of buildings and for agriculture,
Learn more about the old Dutch windmills and enjoy this documentary.

I live on Java island and am very much like your video. It is interesting and instructive as well. I have learned for long the saying that goes "God create the world Dutch create the Netherlands". I surprise to see that inside the windmill is a clean and cosy dwelling.

Wonderful video... it looks similar to our farming town in the Philippines, just without the windmills and cold weather...Mr. Fred has a beautiful windmill house 🙂

That yowling singer in the background is annoying.
