Loved that ship. We were on her a total of 30 nights over 3 cruises. Sept 2001 was the transatlantic crossing that was to be her last cruise but, after 9/11, they brought her back for a few more years.
I was present for her departure from Miami. I had just started working for Norwegian Cruise Lines as a passenger agent at MIA at the time. I remember being there with my crew members all dressed up in our NCL uniforms at the pier of Port of Miami. They broke the giant 🍾 bottle on her before she was realized on her last voyage to India. My boss cried has she slowly and gracefully left port. An image of her sailing lonely up the canal still is pictured on the back of my mind. It was definitely an emotional bon voyage. Has she sailed away from her tropical home port l could almost here her say good bye and thank you. She was a beautiful and majestic sight to behold. The last thing we saw was a wreath that was thrown in the ocean lying on her departed watery trail. It was a privilege and honor to have been there for her somber but in hopes she would return departure.
This was the first and only cruise ship I’ve ever been on back in 2000 with college friends. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to be part of history. RIP to those lost in the explosion and to the ship herself. 😔
@djkilly1998 I completely agree. As one of the largest ocean liners of its time, it's hard to make the argument that all those extra decks were really necessary.
We cruised with her in 1984 before they screwed her up by adding the upper decks. She was our first of 4 cruises we have been on and I will, by far, remember the SS Norway as my favorite. The theme on our cruise? "Let Yourself Go".
I worked in the ship to shore radio service back then. If you made a phone call through the radio officer, we placed it. $5.00 per minute back then! So long old girl.
Its very sad seeing this wonderfull ocean-ships ending in India. But it is so beceause comercial this ships are today not to use for business. Only for cruising today big ships are necessary. Aeroplanes are doing now the crossing Europe-USA. No Oceanship could do this by this low price and short time ! Its sorry, but the time for person- lineships is gone !
@daniding1 ncl is a malaysian company now but the ss "norway" dosent sound as good as the ss france her real name from when she was a french ocean liner then the air lines had to come and kill the ocean liners so then they became cruse lines som companys became cruse lines but others closed forever but conard is still a ocean line anyway ncl bouht her and added 2 more decks but u can see were its avyos and redid the inside and re painted her and she looked beeter as a ocean liner!!
they had to keep it to make it a museum floating with its original name without the superstructures that put and ruined such a ship with so much history on it
The SS France was a pure ocean liner, only made for fast Transatlantic crossings The oil crisis in the early 1970's ended the career for many ocean liners, so also for the SS France. She was laid up in 1974, after the French government stopped its subsidies to the CGT shipping company. NCL bought her in 1979

Thanks for posting this. I miss that beautiful lady. She truly was standing out everything else at sea.
I am in tears ,Goodbye Blue lady. ....The World will surely miss you. ...
Served as a passenger ship for two great countries. Goodbye old girl.
We live in a world that knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. Sad business

Such a beautiful ship did not deserve to be scrapped the largest ship in the world until the QM2 launched this ship has gone down in history.
Auch wenn die "Norway" schon nicht mehr die "France" war: Weh tut´s trotzdem, daß der schönste aller Liner nicht mehr ist.
Tive a felicidade de viajar neste belo navio! Saudades!

You will be avenge Norway. To those who scrapped you, the last thing they will see is the chikara (power) that is in my eyes.
Shame that they can't build ships like that nowadays

Why, I wonder, was the France sold off becoming the SS Norway. in the first place? I think the France was elegant, whereas the Norway was pretentious.
