So, the basic idea of the Indian caste system was based upon “karma” or deeds of the person. Social mobility was very imminent when this system was formed. But, greed is also imminent in societies, and as people rose in ranks, they wanted to cement their position for their progeny. Hence, they introduced nepotism, or caste by-birth. Sages of India such as Vashistha and Vishwamitra were from the warrior caste but rose to the Brahmin or Scholarly caste, through the liberty of the original caste system.
