I grew up with Pfeffernüsse and Lebkuchen during Christmas among Zimtsterne and Spritz Gebäck. My mom would bake for days and had to hide the cookies in tins so we'd have enough for Christmas Eve dinner and after church. I lost Mom last year and I'll never get to have a cookie Christmas ever again. Thank you Chef John for brining back amazing childhood memories. If you could make Zimtsterne or a recipe for, I'd be over the moon! Anise Plätzchen were another yummy treat. Yes, my Christmases as a child in Germany were actually not too bad, lots of baked goods and yummy Blood Oranges from Israel. Chef John, I wish you an amazing Christmas and Holiday season!!! Thank you 🥰🥰🥰🎄🎄🎄

I made Chef John's Pfeffernusse cookies. Pfeffernusse had been my favorite Christmas cookie forever. The taste of them signaled the beginning of the Christmas season for me. I got them every year at Trader Joe's, and as often maddeningly happens with T. Joe's items, one year they were no more...so sad. I found a recipe and made them, but they didn't turn out well and were rock hard. But with Chef John's recipe, success! I rolled in powdered sugar while still warm, simply because that's my preference. Happy to have my holiday pfeffernusse back.

I've been baking for 60 years and tried these today. This is the best, most tender shortbread I ever baked. I'm making them for a community event and truly will be proud to serve them. I just bought some carved wooden molds for gingerbread, and made six Christmas tree cookies from this dough as well. The dough kept the definition of the carving...can't wait for them to cool so I can decorate them. I made the thumbprint cookies exactly as shown in your recipe. Thank you so very much, Chef John!

We always make Russian tea cakes for Christmas. My Mom switches it up a bit and used almond extract instead of vanilla and put a maraschino cherry inside for a cute surprise. They are great both ways. So delicious!

Yes - I wondered about the cayenne, but trusted Chef John and tossed it in. When I tasted the dough I thought it might be a bit too spicy, but by the time it mellowed in the frig for a couple of days, the cookies turned out with just the right amount of spiciness.

I'd like to send you my great grandmother's pfeffernuse recipe straight from Germany 1920's. I made them every year with my grandmother, filled her kitchen. We made our gingerbread men out of this recipe as well. Fresh spices were moist, dark and light raisins. My job was always to hammer the chunk of bakers ammonia for the cookies! Yup, a chunk of bakers ammonia. Our cookies always stuck together, considered a bonus huge cookie when you're told to only have one

I found these at Publix. Had no idea what they were, but gave them a try. They are delicious 😋
But, there’s no cayenne. I don’t taste pepper. They taste like licorice (star anise) and are coated with powdered sugar.
