Just went from watching your burnt out video to this and so glad to see where you've found yourself and how much more at peace you seem. Thanks for all that you do for us students interested in pursuing these careers!
Talking about the hours of work and weekend / OOO working… if you’re not doing it, someone else is. Make yourself known as a reliable pair of hands and as Barack Obama advised, “to get ahead in your career, just get s**t done”. Decent vid as always 👍🏼
You just brighten up my day as a 9-5 office worker. I hope some day I'll be more productive and capable to have a better life quality & generally have a more enjoyful career. Thank you
I’m going through the same thing! Busy planning season, seeing my colleagues work on weekends, learning product feature impact, building roadmap slide decks. I also go to the office on Fridays since it’s actually possible to book a room
I like how you’re so self aware and transparent pointing out that it seems like some tech workers make it seem like they spend little time working and most of the time chilling, but that it’s not like that for every office worker. I met a guy at a party that works at capital one as a SWE that says he works from 10 am to 3 pm usually and he makes high 6 figs and he’s only a year out of college 🥲
Hey Shivani! Hope you're doing well, and thanks for sharing that story. I've also met people like that - rest assured that's not the case for everybody in tech!
@@matthuang21 Hope you're doing well too and hope your copy of "Let's Circle Back: A Corporate Storytelling Game and Prompt Deck" came in the mail alright! Been a busy summer down here too but looking forward to your videos esp vlogs!
what is the compensation like in your new role when compared to your previous consulting job. And also is there a good career progression in the strategy and ops department at google?
Hello Matt, I am currently in a bit of a struggle in my life and career as I want to make a career pivot into Finance, mainly into Investment Banking or consulting, but I graduated majoring in Law in 2023. I have interest in finance and want to make a career in it but I am not sure how can I get into such roles. It would be really helpful and insightful if you can make a video dedicated for people who are or might be in a similar situation in the future and they can come to your channel to get a roadmap and guidance. TIA
Hey Matt, great video! I'm curious about how your working hours at Google compare to those in Consulting. Generally, Consulting can often be described with a 10-8-6 schedule (or worse) and typically averages around 60-70 hours a week. How is it at Google?
60-70 hours a week is pretty accurate for consulting. So far at Google it's been 40-50 hrs on average, with the infrequent busy week in the 50-60 hr range (usually if you work on a weekend day) - WLB is 100% better over here. I also travel around once a quarter at Google (vs traveling frequently while in consulting) and have far more control over my schedule because now I'm on the client side.

Right? Making the pace sustainable not just for you but for all your co-workers. That is one of the things that I learned during my internship.
