Some sounds I was playing with while making my upcoming review of the Oberheim OBX8. It sounds amazing - everything you'd expect from a recreation of the OBX, OBSX, OB-A and OBXa

Congrats! I got mine last week, and it’s truly a time-machine synth, as it sonically takes you back to the late 70’s early 80’s. Extremely warm, full, vibrant, thick, luscious stereo sounds! It’s also a really fun synth to program. Tom and his team, did an outstanding job, and it pares perfectly with my OB-6.

Thanks so much for both of the in depth videos. Really great to see how you struggle with it and I completely get it, they could have included a few more knobs for the page two functions ... But then, on the other hand, just judging from your video: It is probably one of the best sounding PolySynths that has come out in recent years. The price is steep but you get a lot of sound for it :) Thank you very much for the work. I'm contemplating now on getting one.

All you need to hear packed in this nice demo. I played with it at NAMM22, it's all the analog OB one can imagine, still very easy to work with. The mechanical finish it's outstanding. Alas the 5K it costs puts it way out of my hobby range. But for the pro, forget needing any of the vintage models, this one's the one to rule them all 😉

I picked up an OBx8 recently. It sounds incredible. Someone mentioned that modern synths covers what this can do... Yeah, they can I suppose, but in a worse way. I've been buying/selling/playing synths for many years, and using the OBx8 is a wonderful experience. Every time I use it my jaw drops in amazement of the sounds. I A/B'd the matrix-1000 and while very close at times, there are some differences. The OBx8 is generally smoother sounding and the VCOs sound nice when multiple notes are being played together.
Thanks for the videos, Starsky. Definitely helped me make a decision when buying.

Now that everyone that bought one has played Jump and Subdivisions on it, enjoy whatever else you get out of it. The sound quality is great. Very pleasing. Great for someone with deep pockets, and an already well stocked studio. Or a keyboard player that plays music in the style of the OB's timeperiod. But, just for me personally, I think they missed an opportunity with this to take the vintage and add something modern, to make it interesting. Four envelopes (looping), four LFOs, wavefolder like the Moog Mavis, saturation pre and post filter, like the Summit. For 5k in 2022, they could have added at least a few interesting aspects, to give it a broader palette than slavishly making a new vintage OB; it's not exciting to me. It's a bit like if Roland released a 5k TR-909. The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave is a better example of rendering the spirit of the original unobtanium but in a modern more powerful form. Quadrupling it to 24 voices and 4 part multitimbrality. Adding all the modulation/matrix and also additional modern oscillator modes ... and it is 33% cheaper than this with triple the voices, quadruple the modulation ... and effects. In fact, it makes the OB-X seem very overpriced. I'd rather a 3rd Wave plus an OB6 over this one. Or an OB6 + UDO + Polybrute.

My decision was the Prophet 5 and love my prophet 5 so much but a oberheim is my next choice, cause the Polysound is so powerfull and uniquè, first i want to buy the ob 6 but in Comparing with the ob x8, in this compRing the ob 6 sounds like a prophet6 with oberheim filters the ob x8 sounds 100% like oberheim but in the end this a question how much money you can save. At the end i have to buy the ob 6 but if i had the choice( couse money is not a problem ) definitiv the ob x8

Wonderful "essentials only" analog poly design that sounds wonderful to me. I appreciate it would have gone a bit against the "classic" aesthetic, but feel a sub-osc and endless rotaries w/led surrounds could have been worth it. At the same time $5k for an SMB/IC/DSP synth with all digital modulation I feel is a lot to ask even sounding this good. That is getting into Omega 8 territory which is quite a bit more flexible while still being an "essentials only" design and is through hole discrete. There is a reason it has been a "secret weapon" for 2 decades now.

How anyone can prejudge an instrument that has not even been officially released yet is beyond me. All we know for now is what the beta testers and Anderton's have shown. And all those videos were made with pre-production units. Have you been an actual member of their beta test team? And if yes...wouldn't it have been your job to tell Behringer what needs to be improved so that it won't be like "garbage" in the end? The fact alone that Behringer did a beta-testing program for the UB-Xa shows that they have put a lot of effort into improving themselves lately. And about the quality of their products: Behringer produces low-budget audio equipment. So if you have high-end expectations (like expecting devices to still work properly after warranty time has run out), that's not Behringer's fault. Yes...they use - for example - less screws on the inside of their devices so that the audio jacks, edit knobs and patch points (of modular synths) are sometimes pretty wobbly...so what? On the positive side they can handle more tension this way without breaking apart too quickly. Music Tribe is a huge company. The bigger the company, the more issues can happen (including firmware bugs etc.). I'm still wondering why the first edition of their TC Electronic June-60 had a too fast LFO speed. How could THAT even happen...? 😂 By the way: Behringer is working on an OB-X clone which will be made of discrete components. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

This has a more mellow feel and it sits low and mid where as the OB6 has that crisp high end and lots of mid content with a more melancholy feel

After owning an OB8 (just recently sold) and watching all the OBX8 videos and checking out the specs multiple times, I have to say I think the OBX8 is the most over priced synth on the market. I can't believe they stuck to the primitive specs of the OBX. One LFO? Two EGs? One filter? They claim it can also duplicate the OB8 but that's impossible since the OB8 has 3 LFOs. When I read the specs I thought for sure they were wrong and would be updated but no such luck. They could have easily put a couple extra LFOs and EGs in there for more interesting sounds. The way it is now it's basically only for a small group of people that worship that generic Oberheim brass sound and want to keep playing those same sounds. I sold my OB8 because the whole page 2 functions were kind of a pain although there were very cool options. More interesting options than the OBX8. Even though I really don't need anymore synths I would have jumped at the OBX8 if they would have done something like the Moog One with several lfos, egs, 3 filters, and endless possibilities. A year after getting the One and I'm still discovering new sounds and modulation craziness. The OBX8 is seriously only for people that worship those old presets. They're cool but definitely NOT $5000 cool.

Besides the Oberheim sound it doesn't have anything special. The OB-6 (together with my Prophet 08 and REV2 is my favourite synth, I love the lush darkness in these synths) is sound wise more compelling to me and is priced correctly, still expensive, but it is worth it.
