A .700 gun isn't really something in common use. Seeing as the one you're using is double barrel it's probably what they call a stopping gun. It's really ridiculously heavy with outrageous recoil but while big game hunting, if a rhino or an elephant decides to charge,it's just about the only thing that will stop them. Hunting guides in Africa usually carry things like that.Also, they're awful at greater than point blank range so the shot you fired at the t-rex probably didn't hit.

I really like when you do that thing in editing where you stop and briefly explain why you're wrong (like stopping to point out that the triceratops is a herbivore). It's rather funny.
Also keep in mind that XP is also awarded based on whereabouts you hit the dino, which is why you shot at and stabbed the T Rex to death and got less XP, but you shot the Triceratops in the head, killed it instantly and got more. I think that like in most hunting games, to get the most XP you need to hit the heart if you can.
Not sold on the rest of the game, but the weather and lighting effects were surprisingly attractive, especially that sunrise over the cliffs near the start.
Yep those black shotgun shells are called slugs. The red shells are called buckshot, the ammo used to kill the T Rex. Whereas buckshot is just a shotgun shell full of pellets, that's fired out of a shotgun and lends well to a spread out impact, slugs are shotgun shells containing one giant ball of lead that's more precise and lends well to greater stopping power, as you proved when you killed the Triceratops.
Jon, just a quick note on hunting: Avoid aiming for the head, and aim for the chest/body area. Large animals often have thick skulls and bone, making it harder to kill them with conventional firearms.
They don't really manufacture firearms in Peru. Their military mostly uses firearms contracted from other countries and there isn't an incredibly high amount of civilian firearms in circulation although it is theoretically possible to own one as a civilian. Their laws seem slightly more restrictive than those in the UK. A pump-action shotgun is pretty hard to mess up though. Even if the action is a little sticky, the pressures generated are pretty low in a shotgun. So I wouldn't really have worries about any shotgun made after smokeless powder was in widespread use being unsafe.

Jon, have you ever played Jurassic Park Genesis? It was a park building game based on... well, making a Jurassic Park inspired park of your own. It was really nice, actually, and had some nice details in how the animals acted. Loved making one big mega-pen to act as a "real wild" enclosure....
I've suggested it before, and I'm sure I'll suggest it again: The Long Dark. The wolves in that game will fuck you up, and if you want to get a good shot on a deer, you need to be nice and stealthy. If something is injured and runs away, you'll need to follow the small drops of blood it leaves to find it again, and it might have dropped dead, or still be alive. Or you might just die from hypothermia.
Fun fact: there are different species of Raptor ranging from turkey sized to the more fearsome and significantly larger Utah raptor only discovered after Jurassic park aired. So they made a fake dinosaur and then it was discovered.

Love how Jon just completely forgets to actually get the money and EXP from all the Velos, which coulda got him some cool stuff. Anyways, the whole point of theHunter is to be slow, and careful. There are some BIIIIIG dinosaurs with nasty teeth who want to use you as a toothpick. You have to be slow, creep around, and if you can, blast them from behind. In the regular Hunter it's a lot more boring because there's no real risk of getting attacked.
That T-rex took how many shots from a .700 rifle? It's T-rex, not a tank. .700 rifles are the sort of things they used to use to hunt elephants. They don't even make that stuff anymore except by special order. The bullets are sold at $100 USD each.
There used to be a very fun game much like this that i used to play, like with the tracker phone thing, there was purchaseable weapons and gear as well as trophy stands for a sort of sky-base platform thing that you could have the heads of your kills on. A bit morbid but it was genuinely a lot of fun. Unfortunately don't remember the name though :(

It's basically like this game but you'll be hunting animals that are alive today like moose and elk and deer. If you liked this I think you would enjoy it

The late 1980’s to early 90’s was a time when a whole bunch of dromeosaurids (the family of dino species including raptors) were discovered and so species go confused. Michael Crichton the author of the Jurassic Park books had heard of both Velociraptor and a species called Deinonychus which is also a ‘raptor’. Crichton wanted to include the raptors as scary dinos, but he realised that REAL Velociraptors were tiny, adults were about the size of pheasants or chickens, and hunted in big packs. He loved the name though because it suited the dramatic thriller genre of the story, so he called his raptors Velociraptor but their appearance is based on the Deinonychus. FYI on average Deinonychus are about 5 feet tall, real Velociraptor are about 3 feet tall at most and weighed about 7 to 15 kilograms/15 to 33 pounds. Utahraptor like what’s featured in this game were actually the biggest raptors, and I mean BIG, closer in size to Jurassic Park’s raptors, in fact the species was discovered so close to when they filmed it, that scientists considered calling the species Utahraptor spielbergi because Steven Spielberg helped fund a lot of paleontological research back then. The largest Utahraptor adults could get up to 20 FEET LONG and weigh about the same as a grizzly or polar bear, with a height of about 1.7 metres/5 foot 6!

Ark, survival evolved is fun. I'm not sure it's a game you would like because it's very crafty-buildy, but it let's you tame and ride dinosaurs, so maybe worth a look

Jon clearly thinks the raptors from Jurassic Park are realistic but the only real raptor that got that big was the Utah raptor.
