    I like the old street lamp out by the front in one of the first early photos. This would make a really great addition if reinstated.

    You are doing such a wonderful job of documenting your renovation. Your water crane would probably have been gravity fed from a raised water tank rather than pumped, I think.

    Don't bother looking for a water tank; you would only find a cast iron pipe. The apparatus on the platform is called a water crane, not a pump. It would have provided water from a header tank mounted on a brick base somewhere, probably on the elevated goods sidings behind the far platform.

      And personally I rather see the money spent making progress in getting started on the inside. Tasks around the exterior on the land can wait.until you see what funds , if any, are left for these "nice to have " vanity upgrades.

      It could even been fed by an underground source like a borehole, which also asks the question how is the pond fed?
      From the internet “The water tower is essentially a raised tank for short-term water storage that allows a constant flow to consumers despite peaks in use. The source of the water supply may be a lake or reservoir, a river, a well or a deep bore-hole.”

    I definitely like the older style canopy tbh. Right now the lower canopy closes it off a lot and makes it quite dark. I cannot imagine what it would take to change the roof line to raise the canopy though. Seeing the newer inside photos that you found is really cool. I love the old pond feature and think it would be something great to restore too.

    Your love for the old station and its history is admirable. I recently became a train driver (machinist) for the Dutch Railways and can only dream of the privilege you have, living in railway heritage. Therefor is most important that you reinstate the original canopy, in shape and detail. I might not agree with all the choices for the interior plans, but I understand it has to become a livable family home.
    This can be balanced out on the outside by keeping its exterior as original and complete as possible. The current canopy is a disgrace to the original design. Please consider.

    Fascinating photographs. Thank you for showing them.
    The old canopy right across the building looks considerably better than the current one. Maybe, if you reinstated an original design, you could put glass in its roof to admit light through to the window areas?
    Water towers were also gravity fed from a reservoir tank higher up, or refilled from tankers brought along the railway. Think about what would power a water transfer from tower to engine tender, quickly and in considerable volume, and it could give clues about which method they used at your station.
    Would like to see the chimneys reinstated too. 🙂

    The device for supplying the locos with water is called a water crane. It would normally be supplied by gravity from a tank at a higher level. This is because when the station was built electric pumps did not exist!

    while the old canopy does suit the building better sometimes you need to embrace the changes that have happened over time. If you guys love sitting outside then maybe it's better to keep it. The only thing I've always thought is how dark the room behind it would be because the canopy hangs so long.

Station running in boards and signs were enameled, with white lettering on a dark blue background. Hope this helps. Guessing the station starts with a W.

    Morning, looking at some old maps of the station, regarding the water column on the platform. there does appear to be some evidence of a wind pump some 76m south west of the station accessed only from the Railway cottages. also the Lidar mapping show some foundations/level areas in the 'hidden garden' the size of a railway water tank. it would be high enough up to gravity feed the platforms.

      In Australia the old steam trains were filled from a high overhead water tank by gravity. The odd one is still standing, so I doubt. there would be one underground. Growing up on a farm in the 50s & 60s you could only use water from tanks to tap level as no pumps were available.

    Just a word of caution on digging up the old water tank, It may be far larger than you imagine as it would have held several thousand liters of water to fill up the tenders on the old steam locos. This would be a big space to fill if the "top" of the tank is beginning to fail .However it also may have been filled in when the water crane was removed. I have seen a couple of underground reservoirs that had been used for filling tenders and they are very large. Generally the tops are removed and the tank is filled with dirt or gravel , then leveled off . The tank also may be in another area and the water pumped to the water crane, just food for thought. Wonderful work on your station and excellent work in obtaining old photos to aid in your restoration.

    Interesting. I love seeing the old photos. I love the old canopy but understand if it’s not as useful, and restoring it might be in the way of your current plans. Light coming into windows might be more practical. I really would like to see the finials put back on the roof. A simple thing like those do bring the Victorian charm out. The chimneys might have been modernized for some structural reason, but they certainly were lovely. The old lights on the depot might be able to be recast. Since you have one left. The acorn top light lamp post are already remade. I do question if the square lamp top was added to replace the acorn top lamp tops. I can’t wait to see what you do next.

    That was awesome, thank you for sharing. I do prefer the old canopy and if you ever did reinstate it you could always extend it further out to provide more shelter from diagonal rain, if that side is in the prevailing wind. If that side is west facing the the old canopy would also have kept the interior cooler by shading the end rooms with the extra width.
    The new canopy, for me, finishes too low and feels a little oppressive. Perhaps a compromise on cost and shelter would be to alter the new canopy from level with the back walls to a flatter profile so it doesn't drop so low towards the platform?

  • @bex57222
    @bex57222 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I totally understand your hesitation about the cost of restoring the old canopy, but the new one doesn’t fit the style of the station. Because it’s just an extension of the house’s roof with the same pitch, it’s much too low and the pitch too steep. It reminds me of a guy with a hoodie half pulled down over his face. It’s hiding the architectural beauty of the station. Perhaps your architect can compromise by leaving the same size roof (not running it across the entire back) but raising the pitch and adding a “break” so the porch roof has a lesser pitch than the main roof, similar to the old roof style. This would let the roof fall somewhere between the two roof styles so that it gives enough weather protection but isn’t so low that it looks out of place. Might be something to consider before any roof work is done. It might be more expensive to change later if you regret the decision to keep the new version.

  • @Thunderer0872
    @Thunderer0872 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would say that the water was gravity fed from the highest point, say near the road, not under the platform?
    Those water tower/cranes are swung out to the loco the leather sleeve is placed into the tank or Tender hole then a chain is pulled to allow the water to flow into the water tank/tender of the locomotive, what will be under those two pieces of stone will be drainage and a supply pipe from the high tank? Now the tank should be somewhere along the bank near the road over bridge, usually flowing in from a supply or a wind pump on sight.
    The inside looked good in the 1990/2000's before sale. I am sad that the glass original canopy won't return, but I understand that what's there works and is cheaper than all that glass again. However, you could weld the 'I' beam back to the wall and have wind brakes on the edges of the canopy they always did well in stopping rain, unless you get lots of sideways rain of course?
    I did mention before the 1920s pic was a glass photographic plate that appeared to be cracked as you mention. That's the glass the picture was exposed onto as film plastics were not made at that time, the glass plate may have been broken in the years after it was taken and developed on, not the camera lens.
    Looking at the old maps, it says there was a milepost just north of the footbridge on the wall of the triangle of land where you cleared the bushes near the road. I can't see any tank that held water anywhere on the map. The signal box is way south of the station in the yard now south of you. There was a semaphore signal right against the over road bridge there may be signs of that as well as the base of the footbridge on the platform if you cleared the grass away one day? Anyway another great video again looking forward to what comes next x

    Unless there are structural issues being caused by the water tanks, I think it is a costly waste of time and resources to dig it up. Maybe a project at a different time, if you are that desperate to sate your curiosity. I think you should reinstate the original canopy (verandah). It is in keeping with the building. The sloping "canopy" is quite ugly. Architecturally not in keeping with the building. Anyway, I'm sure you will do as you please. I hope it all goes well, whatever the decision. Cheero.

    Really unlikely there is an underground water tank. Usually you would have a water source (stream, brook or other surface natural resource) to supply water to a sub-system which would put water into a tank above locomotive height and with some reserve for locos. to replenish as required. Canopy:- never liked what the previous owners did to your lovely canopy. Would love to see the original canopy rebuilt, but money is an obvious constraint as is necessity.

    Before you start digging to see if there's a water tank underground, you might have a metal detectorist out to see if that saves unnecessary digger rental expenses and/or effort. For that matter, there could be all sorts of interesting bits & bobs around the property that could be revealed through the use of a metal detector! Have fun exploring!

      I was thinking the same between the platforms, I think they would have used anything laying around at the time as landfill. I also don't think they need a digger just for exploration purposes.

      As a hobby dectorist, I can say that there will be so much metal bits and bobs under the ground that one would spend 99% of their time digging up trash. However, I'm sure there are some treasures, the hard part is deciding which ones to dig! Modern detectors are able to 'discriminate' some trash from treasure, but not all. And some iron bits could be considered treasured artifacts as well. Still, I would definitely give it a go!
      I don't think I would waste time and effort on the underground water tanks...

    That piece of equipment on the platform is actually a water 'crane', not a pump. When a steam locomotive needs to fill it's tank(s) at a station, it needs a large volume of clean water, really quickly (so as not to hold the train up). This quantity of water is far beyond the capabilities of a direct domestic supply, so the necessary water is stored in a large tank somewhere (which can be refilled slowly by a conventional supply, between trains) and the water piped to the platform using gravity. Some platform water cranes have a tank mounted above them, but yours must have been elsewhere, perhaps in that adjacent yard (?) either sat up on a support frame, on higher ground, or even mounted on the roof of a building such as an engine shed. That grid on the ground under the water crane, is just a large drain cover, to catch the water draining out of the flexible 'bag' used to fill the loco, once the crane is swung back to the platform (so no underground tank I'm afraid).

    It's great to find such historical photos. Helps you decide what to do but at the end of the day, it's no longer a station it's going to be your family home. Do what's right for you. That said, I agree that the new canopy is far more practical and it's proportions suit the house better. Thanks for sharing.

    Wonderful old photos of the station. I do think they punctuate the need to clear back as much of the overgrown foliage as possible to actually get an idea of what you're working with. And who knows, there may be innumerable treasures to be found in the underbrush in and around the property. There looks to be beautiful brickwork, now buried, that supported the platforms. I have mixed feelings about the pond, but I'm sure you and Gil will come up with something wonderful as far as it's concerned. Have a wonderful weekend.

    The old canopy (1920) seems to be higher than the current one. It may be my imagination, but the canopy appeared to be higher and not as long from roof to end. I love the ironwork under the canopy too. Though it would be expensive to replace, I think the original canopy is more graceful and attractive.
    I like the picture of the kitchen without all that black and white tile. It looks more home-like.

      From the picture with the roof covering removed it looks like the original canopy had a hipped roof so the eaves were definitely higher than the current sloped canopy, which is more like a lean-to. This might also be why the original looks shorter.

    Interesting Historical montage. Re water pump. In my opinion you are only going to find a cast iron feeder pipe feeding a small tank which in turn fed the water into the train. BTW i live in Scotland and we had coal mines and god knows what all transported by tank Trains back in the day. The bridges and where the tracks were are still there and i am old enough to remember what our old station was like . Demolished in 1965 when Dr Beeching had his way. Onwards and upwards👍

    Regarding the buried water tank, before digging a massive hole, what about first renting one of those ground-penetrating radar (name?) gizmos that are used by archaeologists. At least then you would know if the effort to dig is warranted. What you are doing is so fun to follow. I've fallen in love with the old station myself. Glad you are saving it.

    The full canopy would put a non-removable shade over all windows on that side, which can be good or bad.
    Also, if the station would need no renovation, you wouldn't get the outstanding home you will get now.
    It wouldn't hurt to look for a water tank, to avoid a bad surprise in the form of a hole to fall in. We had a big sewer tank underground and didn't know it. It was big enough to fit a car. We drove over it, sometimes with a boat trailer. It had a dome on top with a smaller opening, completely covered with stones and soil, invisible. I don't know how much load this dome would carry, obviously it was strong enough. But it made me sweat when I saw the size of it. We found it when we had a company pave our backyard. The mini excavator driver got big eyes when he found it. That mini excavator would have fit nicely in it.

    I can't help but think that 90% of all that greenery / trees all need to be cut back. There's just TOOO much. It's massively overgrown and taking away from the overall view and value of the property to have so much overgrown greenery.

    Dont bother digging under the water column. There is no water tank underneath. Water columns require a lot of water very quickly,too quick for the main water supply. There would be a large storage tank somewhere at a high level, capable of dumping a lot of water quickly. This tank would then have a long period of time to refill from the mains, before the next train arrived.There would only be drains under the m=water column. you can see an upright pipe under the column. this is a fire dog. similar to a chiminea. This was use to stop the water from freezing in winter There was no large lamp on the bridge, it is in the wagon yard. You may need to brush up on your railway terminology. The Engines are Great western pannier tanks. The wagons are a mixture of early wooden and later metal coal and metal ballast waggons.

  • @Demun1649
    @Demun1649 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Don't waste money on bringing a digger in, especially when the tank might not be there any more. Ground penetrating radar, or maybe those "detectorist" people with their beeping things, modified mine detectors.
    As to the canopy. Leave the current roof extension. Use clear polycarbonate roofing, and side screen, sheets. Being clear, it won't stop light going into the windows, and the side screening would reduce the effects of wind and rain. Maybe even extend down, one third of the height of the canopy, giving further protection to the covered area.

    My one problem with the oldest photo is that it looks like it was digitally upscaled. The original photo was likely grainy and/or damaged (it probably looked something like the second photo at 2:13), so someone tried to fix that, resulting in that "mushy" look. As a result, some features may be distorted from their original shape.
