he doesn't have to, that battery cant charge a usb device... usb is 5 volt.. that battery barely looked 1 volt

Instead of connect that kind of battery, you can boy some rechargeables and connect with an special connector dor batteries
There's a Problem with the USB-Charger:
The LM 7805 has three Pins. From Left to right: 1= +Vin / 2= GND / 3= +Vout. I miss the GND-connection to the Battery Ground. Without connected GND-Pin, the Regulator works unstable.
But with connected GND to Battery the Regulator works 24/7 even when no Charging device is connected.
The next thing:
A Battery like this 23AE 12V is a waste of money to charge your phone. This Batteries are designed to deliver only a few milliamps. To charge your Phone you have to deliver a charge-current of 500mA to 2A (depends on the used Phone) and over the time (due to losses) you have to put in a little bit more mAh than your Phonebattery is rated at. With a 6.000 mAh Powerbank i can fully charge my smartphone only 2.5 Times when all RF-Interfaces (like BT, WiFi, mobile-data, NFC...) in the Smartphone are disabled and the Phone is leaved alone.

watching over this mistake.
It's a 5v voltage regulator. The ground wasn't connected. You just needed to connect the ground or 0v connection to the middle pin of the 7805 and it would have worked..... assuming the battery was around 9v or more.

The power bank is useless... Lm7805 doesn't increase any voltage, it decreases it to 5v making it stable

Probably not to long. Those 12V batteries a low capacity. Even lowering the voltage to 6V through a regulator I would think at best you might get an additional 10-25% increase in battery life / power. You should see the most increase when the phone battery was low.
Its a good idea but he should have taken one of those battery holders, mounted it in the gum case so it could be replaced when dead.

1000 mAh battery contains how many mechanical joules?
the circuit won't work, he did not solder the negative wire to the base pin of the voltage regulator. so it will stay off. even if he did, he needs to put a switch there instead, otherwise, it will stay on until the battery is completely drained. And that kind of voltage regulator produces a lot heat, so good luck with the glue tasting mints.

The mint pack cell phone charger didn't show the ground connection to the middle in of the 5 volt regulator and it will not work that way .Not to mention you would only get maybe a partial charge out of such a low current 12 volt source . Would be better with a rechargeable and a solar cell.

Wrong electrical design AND Dangerous connection to a battery.
First: The 7805 is not connected correctly: it does not work in a 5 volt regulator mode, but only as a big Diode with a voltage drop of 1.6 to 2 volts. That means that the cellphone is powered by (12-2)=10 volts; so that could break a phone or another equipment.
Second: Soldering directly wires to battery is very dangerous as it can provocate an explosion.

I learned that in high school making a tennis ball canon. We used to used 4 tin cans. (We used coke cans, but thats when the can design was entirely different back in the early 70s) I think corn or peas cans would work. with top and bottoms cut off, except for 1 of them. That 1 you put a hole about the size of a BB about an inch from the bottom and cut the top off but leave the bottom. Tape the other 3 cans on top of that 1. The tennis ball should fit in just snug enough to not slide down, but not too snug. Using JUST LIGHTER FLUID, NOT GAS, put a squirt down the top of the cannon, hold the bottom of the cannon and give it one good swing. This mixes the fluid and air just about right. Put the ball in about an inch, do not aim it at anyone cuz its pretty powerful. (do it in a field). Point it at a 45° angle as if to hit a home run. Put your foot behind it cuz it will kick back, but not too much. Light the little hole in the bottom can and keep your face away. BOOM! Sometimes works better thsn other times. Youll know you're doing it right when after about the 10 time it starts to weaken. Thats because the cans inner diameter has stretched out. Not much you can do at that point except make another.
We eventually moved upto using oxygen & acetylene and a piece of fence pipe welded to a steel plate with a spark plug to ignite it. Its a one time shot, as theres no frikken way youre going to find the ball, and besides, police would have already been called. This cannon you ONLY POINT STRIAGHT UP AND PLUG YOUR EARS.

You could have at least put a lithium ion rechargeable battery in that gum pack because you may get a quarter of a charge on a cell phone these days with that thing and then you got to throw it away.

What is the principle behind the first one
The phone charger I didn’t see him connect up the ground pin on the voltage regulator. You’d have to change the battery as this circuit wouldn’t all you to charge it and you would need a special charger circuit depending on the type of battery
