I just got the blue Mark XX this week in time for my birthday. I also considered the Mark XVIII Le Petit Prince or Spitfire, but couldn't quite make myself pull the trigger on either. Now comes the Mark XX with all the boxes ticked, except for one thing, a metal bracelet. I wanted to wait until it came out, but then heard of news of another price hike from September so it didn't made any sense to wait any longer. The very first watch I bought out of my salary was a Planet Ocean, and it was my only watch for like 11 years. As my preferences shifted towards dressy watches, I started collecting different kinds of watches, but always felt I had to trade off between usability (WR, PR, anti-magnetism) , size, and price. Having had the Mark XX for a few days, It's as if I have found my perfect one-watch collection again after all these years. Once I get the metal bracelet I think my other watches would be going to new homes (except maybe for the JLC..in which case it will be a two watch collection😏)
As someone who heavily considered the Mark XVIII but held off, these changes sold me. I have had it for a few days and I love it. The blue dial is a great summer watch and I’ve been swapping between the strap and natos daily. looking forward to the bracelet!
The fact that Marx XX has 120 hours power reserve and 100m water resistance is already a huge improvement compared to the XVIII. Nearly wanted to get the XVIII before this - luckily I held on.
It's tough to watch this as an owner of a Mark XVIII. I still really enjoy it and don't want to sell it. Makes me kind of glad that they didn't do heavy marketing for the XX. I'll upgrade when they release a dial with fully loomed markers.
His review is excellent. I bought a Mark XX a few months ago for my daily timepiece. I immediately installed a black NATO and so it looks like just an ordinary inexpensive watch to a non watch "guy" (and my wife). The Mark XX very accurate and it's power reserve is most impressive and is longer than my manual "luxury" timepieces. It's unfortunate that we live in a world that can get you killed for wearing a fake Sub.
This is a very useful video. To the point. I would have surely missed some of these details. Thanks for the comparison. The 8 year warranty is class leading.
They FINALLY did some very nice and needed tweaks (shorted that ridiculous lug to lug distance, which is still too long, but an improvement nevertheless; improved the legibility with the polished hands; improved the proportions on dial; moved the date closer to the chapter ring, etc; and the movement, yes!!! finally!! They are now in the 21st century with power reserve and price point).
Thanks for reviewing, for me the disappointments are the date window - beats me why they could not move it to the 6 o clock as it is supposed to be an "in - house" movement, the silvered hands opposed to the 18s Matt black (more legible) and well size (a 38 mm would have been awesome). Also, note that the 8 year warranty has been going on for the last two years, so it also holds for the Mark 18s and others in the IWC lineup.
@@MinuteMon agree 100%. I love the XVI in 38mm that I bought two. A silver and black. The sizing and comfort makes me forget about all of my past Rolex pieces. I bought two Tudor Rangers to sort of transition away from Rolex but found them a bit too large and would tend to porpoise. I couldn’t be happier with my XVI’s, even if they’d cost twice as much. Just perfect!
As a owner of the mark 18, I think this new mark xx is the closest watch you are going to get to perfect. It beats anything from any other brand, I will hopefully buy it one day but I still love my 18 and will keep that for now.
@@algorithm007ify I'm a big longines fan, I've owned the spirit, i sold it as the true pilots watch is the iwc. The ar coating on the Longines would scratch easily, the case back felt a bit cheap with the screws, the dial has got too much going on with the stars and diamond hour markers. The iwc has a much better strap, has an iron inner cage, better finishing, etc. Objectively the iwc is better, the brand also carries more prestige. Longines is in the same bracket as oris and Tudor, iwc is in the same bracket as Rolex, JLC, etc. When you have an iwc in hand then come back and comment.
@@johnnysilverhand1733 explorer is nice, I tried on the new 36mm but it looked tiny. For me the iwc edges it, the iwc is more versatile and has a date window which I prefer. Both are great watches but it's down to which design and brand you prefer
@@johnnysilverhand1733 I did own a 36mm op, the 2017 model, that wore better than the current 36mm explorer. 40-41mm is usually max I can get away with.
I have always wanted to buy an IWC mark series watch but was holding to see if they improved certain things like water resistance and power reserve. I pulled the trigger on the mark xx recently and am super happy. The changes make this a perfect watch for me. The power reserve is amazing and the accuracy of the movement has been pretty steady, +2 seconds on average every day. The thinness is really nice and can't wait for the bracelet to be made available.

I had the Mark XVIII Petit Prince but found it too small. I later bought the Big Pilot 43, also in blue. I think the XX will suit those people who can't get away with the larger design. It's nice but I wouldn't swap the BP43 for anything.
Thank you for pointing out a lot of the subtle and not so subtle differences. I’d still go with a M18. Not a fan of that negative color date window at all.

Thanks for the super-informative video! Have always loved the IWC Mark Series. Have the XVIII and it's far and away my favorite watch. The XX updates - esp. the longer power reserve and the shorter overall lug width - make it very appealing
Love the updates to the Mark XX... do wish they'd lume the entire indices like they do on the newer Big Pilots!! Also WISH this movement was put into the newer IWC Ingenieur Silver dial watches as that would be my go-to.
I feel like besides the movement no real improvements. They could have fixed the date window and improved the lume. I will miss the matt black hands, they were my favourite 😀 and still a fan of the pilot collection!
I don't understand why everyone gripes about the previous Marks having less than 100 meters water resistance. IWC makes it very clear on their website, and has for years now, that they operate on a different standard. Even at 30 meters resistance they say their watches are made for swimming. At 60 you can do snorkeling. It's great they upgraded to 100 meters here for everyone who fails to do more research (probably because the min standard of 100 meters is so ingrained in our minds) but you can swim in any IWC Mark model watch. You always could.

I have the Mark XVIII blue dial with bracelet. I love the look. I think the changes to appearance are subtle. I wish they made the date larger. The big change to me is the movement. I find I need to give the Mark XVIII a bit of a wind each morning to ensure it runs for 24 hours. I find the micro adjustment on the bracelet
I read somewhere that the Pilot's watch Spitfire (the 39 mm) was supposedly the Mark XIX. But this Mark XX may be just the IWC I'm finally going to enter into the brand with!
IWC are very impressive watches no doubt. But I find it hard to justify the price of many of the pieces. Was toying with purchasing one a few years back but brought a steel / gold Globemaster instead. Decent review though.
That is the reality of quality made products. They cost money. It is only now that all the cheap capital has dried up that people are starting to see the price of real products especially in the quality area of the market. A Globemaster is not even the same type of watch.

They didn't really move the date window much if at all on the XX to my eye. I think by extending the indices inwards, it doesn't look like the date window is on an island like on the XVIII but that's it.
It’s more about how it compares to the placement of the 2 and 4. If you draw a line from the 2 and 4 through the date window on the XVIII it bends inwards towards the centre of the dial. If you do the same on the XX it forms a more pleasing straight line / arc. That was the big complaint with the XVIII. I’m with others tho… just put it at 6, colour match it and call it done 😂
@@sean1e100 yes sir noticed the 2 and 4 too. Everything was drawn inwards either by extending or making bolder. Agreed they'd be better off moving the date to the 6 or eliminating completely!

Just not different enough for me to justify upgrading from my mark 18. If it was true in house and better date window then I would give it serious consideration. Also why didn't they sort out the lume and use applied numerals !!! One of my favorite watches and I appreciate the improvements but they're not enough
Yeah bet if it was " true in house" you would feel the incredible difference in the movement... and still not have bought it because you would have something else wrong with it. 8 years warranty, who needs "true in house" and twice/thrice the price. Do you know many watchbrands that sells watches under 10k that makes their own hairspring?😂

I knew someone would mention the Omega gloves on an IWC video 😅 I got the gloves from my store - Carat & Co. which is an AD for both those brands. I had grabbed those gloves to film and didn’t realize it said Omega until I was editing

I hope to get one soon to add to my amg petronas pilot. Looks amazing but need to try one on at the boutique first. One reason why there is no mark 19 might be because 19 in Cantonese (HK) sounds like swearing. At the end of the day, china is one of the biggest watch markets
@@coffeeboyclips1973 why?? Longines is better... better movement and yes, better design with the 40mm... You have to go the no date titanium 40mm version for the best example. IWC finishing is actually quite basic.
Thanks for doing this thorough video. Do you have any idea of the accuracy of the movement in your Mark XX example? I haven't seen any specs like that on IWC's website, and no mention of COSC or even higher certification. When spending that much, that is something I would like to know. I was hoping for the 72 hour movement from the Spitfire model, but this really went above and beyond with 120 hours. I overall love the changes they made to the watch. The XVIII wore a bit flat for me, even on my 18.4cm wrist. Not terrible, but not what I would want for something costing that much. I think the changes here should be great. The bracelet model is what drew me to even considering the XVIII, especially with its hidden quick adjust feature. I will wait for the XX on bracelet to make any decision. My last complaint is one that exists on the XVIII. The lume not being at every index is puzzling to me. It is clearly a design decision, but I do not understand it. I believe they do lume all the way around on some of their other watches, such as the Big Pilot. I know the Junkers plane was on the XVIII, but I find it wholly uninspiring vs. say the legendary Spitfire. Unfortunately, that watch is not quite what I am looking for due to the aged lume at some markers, and no bracelet.
Great video! But I have a question I can't figure out, no matter how many photos I look at. Are the hands on the new model black or silver? It was definitely black on the old model.
Both versions (blue dial Mark XVIII & XX) are high polished rhodium hands (silver color with Lume) - not black. What could be making it look black is that high polished areas reflect more color, while brush / satin finish reflects more white. The white dial version should have black hour and minute hands though
@@Mega-zi7ys in house is just marketing, movements last forever. Seiko make £50 watches with in house, you should buy one and claim you have a watch with in house movement. The watch is about the looks and finishing, as long as the movement is accurate, who cares.
@@Mega-zi7ys I don't like grand seiko, not my style, at the end of the day it's a seiko. I've owned omega, rolex, Tag, Longines, etc for me I like iwc thr most, I like their designs, stick with what you like.
My wrist is about 16.26cm so you should be okay with it, keep in mind the lug to lug is about 49mm. If you want something more compact try the IWC Pilot 36mm or the Longines Spirit 37mm
I really like the white dial mark 18. Never understood why they didn’t offer it on a bracelet like the other dials. It just becomes way too expensive and overpriced if you have to buy the watch and the bracelet separately.
Maybe I am the rare instance of a person who likes the design of the Mark 18 more than the 20. The larger numbers pushed closer to the indices, and the lack of the extended bar stick indices at 3-6-9 like in the M20, make the overall design more appealing to me. The extra 40m of water resistance in the M20 … meh. Almost none of us are going diving 250ft in a high end watch. The extra power reserve is nice, but again, when has anyone really needed 5 days of reserve? The M20s date window is more aligned with the numeral indicators but that was because they didn’t reposition the date wheel (ie reengineering cost), they cheaply moved the applied numbers over closer to the center. 😅
dial is not crisp any more. mark 18 was perfect dial with small details in markers with 3d effect. now just 2d printing... I better buy mark 18 just for the dial it self or just skip IWC at all. IWC not deserve my money any more. I have before mark 16 and it was beautiful dial. I just olways waiting for inhouse, but now they fucked up dial so bad...
IWC has received a lot of flak from collectors - does anyone know why? I am told IWC has moved down in the hierachy over the last 10-15 years. Please comment. I am not a conneiseur - just curious.
@@coffeeboyclips1973 yes, iwc does manufacture some complicated movements. But you mentioned “prestige” ….. two different things. There is a reason Rolex sells for over retail second hand and IWC tanks as soon as you walk out of the store. It doesn’t have much to do with which brand makes the better or more complicated watches. People want Rolex. It is by FAR a more prestigious brand.

Yes - 8 year warranty has been going on for years now but I always like to mention it anyways. I agree - 38mm would have been the best change

Proportion wise I think my 39mm spitfire looks better. But I do like the shorter lug to lug and more power reserved. Good job IWC.

Mark 19 was the spitfire with the automatic movement
Need this in 38.5. Would be strong candidate for my one-watch collection (for which I’m still searching).

They didn't really move the date window much if at all on the XX to my eye. I think by extending the indices inwards, it doesn't look like the date window is on an island like on the XVIII but that's it.
It’s more about how it compares to the placement of the 2 and 4. If you draw a line from the 2 and 4 through the date window on the XVIII it bends inwards towards the centre of the dial. If you do the same on the XX it forms a more pleasing straight line / arc. That was the big complaint with the XVIII. I’m with others tho… just put it at 6, colour match it and call it done 😂
@@sean1e100 yes sir noticed the 2 and 4 too. Everything was drawn inwards either by extending or making bolder. Agreed they'd be better off moving the date to the 6 or eliminating completely!

Good to see IWC finally drop Sellita movements. Rediculous given where they price their products. Unfortunately though, I’ve heard there’s issues with the 32111 calibre. Jury is out……
I would take the sellita movement all day long over the new “in house” movement.

Just not different enough for me to justify upgrading from my mark 18. If it was true in house and better date window then I would give it serious consideration. Also why didn't they sort out the lume and use applied numerals !!! One of my favorite watches and I appreciate the improvements but they're not enough
Yeah bet if it was " true in house" you would feel the incredible difference in the movement... and still not have bought it because you would have something else wrong with it. 8 years warranty, who needs "true in house" and twice/thrice the price. Do you know many watchbrands that sells watches under 10k that makes their own hairspring?😂

I knew someone would mention the Omega gloves on an IWC video 😅 I got the gloves from my store - Carat & Co. which is an AD for both those brands. I had grabbed those gloves to film and didn’t realize it said Omega until I was editing

I bought the Longines spirit 40mm in blue
You will keep looking at the iwc and eventually sell the Longines and buy the iwc, it happened to me.
@@coffeeboyclips1973 why?? Longines is better... better movement and yes, better design with the 40mm... You have to go the no date titanium 40mm version for the best example. IWC finishing is actually quite basic.

Thanks for doing this thorough video. Do you have any idea of the accuracy of the movement in your Mark XX example? I haven't seen any specs like that on IWC's website, and no mention of COSC or even higher certification. When spending that much, that is something I would like to know. I was hoping for the 72 hour movement from the Spitfire model, but this really went above and beyond with 120 hours. I overall love the changes they made to the watch. The XVIII wore a bit flat for me, even on my 18.4cm wrist. Not terrible, but not what I would want for something costing that much. I think the changes here should be great. The bracelet model is what drew me to even considering the XVIII, especially with its hidden quick adjust feature. I will wait for the XX on bracelet to make any decision. My last complaint is one that exists on the XVIII. The lume not being at every index is puzzling to me. It is clearly a design decision, but I do not understand it. I believe they do lume all the way around on some of their other watches, such as the Big Pilot. I know the Junkers plane was on the XVIII, but I find it wholly uninspiring vs. say the legendary Spitfire. Unfortunately, that watch is not quite what I am looking for due to the aged lume at some markers, and no bracelet.
My XX is really accurate losing just 3 seconds per week! Amazing.

Great video! But I have a question I can't figure out, no matter how many photos I look at. Are the hands on the new model black or silver? It was definitely black on the old model.
Both versions (blue dial Mark XVIII & XX) are high polished rhodium hands (silver color with Lume) - not black. What could be making it look black is that high polished areas reflect more color, while brush / satin finish reflects more white.
The white dial version should have black hour and minute hands though
I think they avoided 9 as it’s seen as unlucky in some cultures

IWC prices is too bold, with these kind of range OMEGA & Grand Seiko is more value for money
Disagree, do seiko and omega make a pilots watch as nice as iwc, also iwc is as a more higher end brand, its not cheap but worth it.

@@Mega-zi7ys in house is just marketing, movements last forever. Seiko make £50 watches with in house, you should buy one and claim you have a watch with in house movement. The watch is about the looks and finishing, as long as the movement is accurate, who cares.
@@Mega-zi7ys I don't like grand seiko, not my style, at the end of the day it's a seiko. I've owned omega, rolex, Tag, Longines, etc for me I like iwc thr most, I like their designs, stick with what you like.

everyone is making a huge deal about the shorter lug to lug distance, it's 2mm! that's less than the distance of the 2 m's in mm. geez.
.2mm actually, super small change, but the lugs curve down a bit better

Can i wear this IWC mk.20 on my skinny wrist of just 16cm's of circumference?
My wrist is about 16.26cm so you should be okay with it, keep in mind the lug to lug is about 49mm. If you want something more compact try the IWC Pilot 36mm or the Longines Spirit 37mm

I really like the white dial mark 18. Never understood why they didn’t offer it on a bracelet like the other dials. It just becomes way too expensive and overpriced if you have to buy the watch and the bracelet separately.
Maybe I am the rare instance of a person who likes the design of the Mark 18 more than the 20.
The larger numbers pushed closer to the indices, and the lack of the extended bar stick indices at 3-6-9 like in the M20, make the overall design more appealing to me.
The extra 40m of water resistance in the M20 … meh. Almost none of us are going diving 250ft in a high end watch.
The extra power reserve is nice, but again, when has anyone really needed 5 days of reserve? The M20s date window is more aligned with the numeral indicators but that was because they didn’t reposition the date wheel (ie reengineering cost), they cheaply moved the applied numbers over closer to the center. 😅
18 looks like a timex. The 20 is significantly better aesthetically. To each their own

dial is not crisp any more. mark 18 was perfect dial with small details in markers with 3d effect. now just 2d printing... I better buy mark 18 just for the dial it self or just skip IWC at all. IWC not deserve my money any more. I have before mark 16 and it was beautiful dial. I just olways waiting for inhouse, but now they fucked up dial so bad...

IWC has received a lot of flak from collectors - does anyone know why? I am told IWC has moved down in the hierachy over the last 10-15 years. Please comment. I am not a conneiseur - just curious.
Iwc is still a top brand and seen as high end, it's probably above Rolex in terms of prestige

There is a reason Rolex sells for over retail second hand and IWC tanks as soon as you walk out of the store. It doesn’t have much to do with which brand makes the better or more complicated watches. People want Rolex. It is by FAR a more prestigious brand.
