I think that was his uncle, who Nicholas II relieved of command so that he personally could command the army.
The Grand Duke Nikolasha (Nicholas's first cousin, once removed). At 6'6, he was (rather
unsurprisingly) known as "Nicholas the Tall" and was a central member of the Russian
high command (or "Stavka"). After the revolution, he fled to France and died there in '29.
