Session 1: Turns 1 - 5 (November 15 - 19, 1862)
Having completed all of the Basic Game scenarios for Burnside Takes Command, and with the continued encouragement of our viewers, we now embark on another Advanced Game! This is our fourth attempt at capturing a campaign format playing against each other, so we hope you enjoy the narrative.
For this first play of the campaign game, Patrick will play the Union (USA), and Roger will play the Confederates. (CSA).
Scenario #4: Burnside Takes Command (Advanced Campaign)
This scenario examines the strategic opportunity Burnside had when he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac.
GAME LENGTH: Up to 31 turns, November 15 to December 15, 1862.

hey Burnside, did you need those pontoon bridges, no? Didn't think so, signed the guy in the rear with the gear.
We got a couple coffee coolers on our hands!!!
This seems extremely tough for the confederate forces. The union have the manpower(as always) to split the confederate defence but cruicially they have the time as well.Looking forward to the next episode
We shall see! The second session drops tomorrow, and it was a doozy!
Friday tribe started this Last friday eager to see how yours shakes out we are only on turn 4
I would say Hood should move south to the perceived threat, not pass.
Agree. "Must move" means exactly that.
my view as well
I'd say the CSA can't pass until Hood has moved due south until he's at fatigue 4 or has reached the south edge.
It is campaign time!
And you even did five days in one session.
…although this achievement was probably also due to the abundance of rain.
Man, you got a lot of the watery stuff again. Seems to be a regular feature of your campaigns.
One thought on the marching economics is such instances:
Why not go to Fat3 on the first day 1 of double-rains? You could, if not more endeavouring, still end on Fat1 on the second day. Then the outcome of 3+1 (healed and thus guaranteed to be non-disorg, non-exhausted) were the same as with 2+2, with the option to perhaps do more. Furthermore, on snake eyes the possibility to walk to Fat2 on second day may never arise! I would prefer to have it rather done as soon as possible.
And why did Reynold’s first corps not move not at all on day one? He could at least have slipped a little to the northeast towards Smith to pick the latter up for a joint grand division march with bonusses on days 2 and 3 on parallel, more northernly, roads towards the east? The Warrenton-Junction rail dam was overcrowded anyway. Marching off early in a bow wouldn’t have spoiled much. The general direction of move was pretty obvious anyway towards the Fredericksburg wing - somewhat “scripted” here due to the double rain start.
At least so I thought.
You turned around some Union guys to my surprise on days 3 and 4.
And to good effect to pull Roger to the river line.
Well done strategically, Patrick.
Overall the Union position looks not too bad now, especially considering that unlucky start with a lot of rain and without pontoons.
Sumner definitely looks well placed and threatening now!
Though for my taste he should have gone to Fat3 on day 5.
Again: To cover what is still free, undefended, and in fine weather.
It could have rained again on the upcoming day!
And the overlook to have forgotten Smith not follow suit on the final day is very unfortunate.
You were a man about it, Patrick. But don’t talk yourself into accepting it too easily.
But Roger did not move the Cav’s lingering around Fredericksburg to optimized spots either.
Also an overlook?
Some further glitches:
At min 47:00 Stuart seems to swim a closed ford. It was still raining then, blocking even the minor river still at this time. Stuart should still be jailed in his “Mesompotamia” in your long rain period up to day 4. There are no “CAV ford” exemptions in the campaign, or are there?
From min 47:40 onwards it looks as if Anderson has/retained 9 artilleries! Sportive gun load! I guess this cannot be true and is an accounting mistake from the detachment.
Regards / happy to enjoy watching the campaign
Holger
Yeah, I might have been a little conservative on marching to F2 only. I just figured the best they could get was 3 more hexes, and more likely 1 hex and Disorged. : -)
Yup, Stuart has hippos! He got a free escape on that one. Oh well. Can't be helped now.
Eagle eye on the Anderson arty. Roger caught it and adjusted it back down to the correct '2' in the video.
Thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying it.
