1) I think Lee Chaeyeon, J Hope, Taemin, Yeonjun are the ones who come to mind first. 2) I usually freestyle in 2 types of situations: first, if I want to make a choreography. I usually just try to feel the music and freestyle some main movements of the upcoming choreo. It reminds me of when an artist scribbles down some random lines to make a new piece of art out of it. Also, another way I use freestyle is simply while listening to some tunes I like or feel, some kpop songs or whatever I'm hearing at the moment
1. I have other favourites but wanted to highlight &team's taki! There's something wonderful in the way he is able to make a bit of his own spin on the choreo and the music (under the skin comes to mind) particularly through his arm movements despite the emphasis on synchronisation. 2. I've hardly ever freestyled, but the most recent memory was just random grooving and probably more disco/rock n roll type moves to funky music, just in a hangout/party setting (like completely unserious and does not look good whatsoever HAHA). Whatever more 'serious' attempts to freestyle (which was many years ago atp) were more ballet or lyrical-esque stuff (because of my background). Tended to revert to using my arms a lot, particularly to express the meaning of the lyrics. I also liked turns, but tended to go off balance lmao. I'm generally a bit too self conscious to freestyle (esp in a more 'street' way) - a bit too afraid of looking silly. Though the video has been super inspiring!
not specific to freestyle necessarily but, jhope (he's a god to me he's my number 1 example in like most dance related topics lol). harry june. jj and james i guess are not idols but i have to mention them anyway. seulgi. mark of nct. chaeryeong. as for freestyling, i do freestyle but not often. i'm a bollywood dancer by training so i mostly do choreo and i've choreographed before and i have a habit of like trying to freestyle with the goal of thinking of a move that should go there in the song so i've kind of conditioned myself to think choreo all the time when i'm dancing. when i run out of ideas i fall back on hip isolations haha just because i'm so used to do doing them and they're so fun

i love chungha's freestyles bc she just owns it. she doesn't try to do anything difficult, she just goes with how her body wants to move, and she has such a unique flare and style that makes her dancing so fun to watch. def my fav dancer in kpop

This video was very well done to give people an idea of what freestyling can be as a freestyle dancer myself. However, I wanted to touch on a type of freestyle that I think should be honorably mentioned (and honestly I just wanna talk about it even though it might not have a lot to do with Kpop dancing): partner dancing. Before I became a dancer myself, I grew up dancing styles such as merengue, cumbia, salsa( Cuban and Caleña), bachata(learned Dominican style recently) and parrandas and joropos( Venezuelan folklore dances). Many of these dances can become choreographed of course, but most of the people that dance this do it on the spot with no preparation with other dancers that they might not even know. It takes a different level of skill to be able to create a dance that incorporates your style while being able to adapt to another dancer that might have a different approach to the dance. It is something very skillful but incredibly fun once you get to that level. Now, I know these dancers and idols don’t really do partner dancing in general. However, I think the fundamentals of how to freestyle with another dancer can still be applied to them as well. J-hope is my favorite freestyler-idol in Kpop tight now. Consider how he’s been an incredibly busy celebrity for almost 10 years, yet he is still fire and never has lost his touch with his root.
The fact that just a video of J-hope doing a small warm-up freestyle, at 2 AM in the morning after a very hectic day just to relieve his stress can be a standard video to explain some points speaks for itself ! He has been a very busy rapper, songwriter and producer yet he never lost his touch with freestyle even 10 yrs after his debut. People should never forget that Hobi has won many freestyle battle competitions (as solo and not with his crew fyi), was the most famous dancer in gwangju, people knew BTS because of his name and is one of handful dancers in Kpop who has the respect of the dance community. 5000 has said recently that dancers had this dream to defeat Hoseok in the battle field !! He has never been showcasing anything, so I think this guy has alot to show yet which I’m hoping and longing for! Thanks for the video.
When i watch J-hope dance, it’s so obvious just how skillful and joyful he is. He’s completely in the moment and that is just so beautiful to see. I think people (esp folks who don’t dance) focuses too much on the perception of skill and forget about the fun of dancing, and that takes away from the presentation of one’s routine. It’s one thing to be a skillful dancer, it’s a completely another thing to be a dancer that people want to watch. It’s like those nugu choreo channels that suddenly goes viral. Did the dancer suddenly get super skillful over the course of one video? No, they were dancing to a really fun song that they enjoy, and that shit translates through the screen.
I’ve been watching Jhope’s dance for years and he never ever disappointed me. His dance is the major reason why I got into bts, to start with! Insane musicality, body control, groove and isolation while he freestyles! Your video just has popped in my recommendation and I’m glad I gave it a shot!
If I remember that Hobi freestyle, he was in the middle of it when you could see a glint in his eye, something in his movements caught his attention and he started to work out a pattern that was interesting and more than just the moment. It was like capturing lightning in a bottle and we were watching it in real time, the master at his craft.
That J hope clip was him at 2am just chilling and he's still absolutely tearing up the floor. I wish his new upcoming hope on the street documentary would show even more impressive freestyling and potentially choreography making from him.
all his freestyle session from his IG stories and weverse lives are saved in my phone. the first time that i saw him danced was from that "kiki do you love me" challenge (i forgot the title). fell inlove with him since then
I really recommend checking out Mingi from Ateez freestyle. He did a dance live where he freestyled for almost an hour. The whole thing was really fun and he’s super amazing, but the stand outs in my opinion were when he danced to: No Diggity (5:10) on the street (17:25) What it is (26:50) Shoong! (47:35) Thank you for the analysis vids, they are super helpful for understanding some fundamentals in dance for non-dancers! ❤
I love that you talked about 5000! His freestyle really has so many intricacies that I think a lot of people tend to miss when they watch battles - especially when he was battling krumpers - that are so fun to break down and analyze.
When Hanbin first did cover of OND Beautiful Beautiful I was like that guy is an okey contestant. While when he did the dance battle with Lip J that is when I was like that guy is very talented. His wacking dance is so cool.
I love that you talk about feeldog. When I saw the video I hoped he would be in here. Feeldog is probably one of the best freestyle dancers with a background in kpop imo(kinda feels like cheating considering he is a long time member of a hiphop dance crew ahah). Dude is an absolute monster
A pretty much long video but thank you for your effort. Jhope and soul have to be my combo for freestyle among idols. I love watching them esp Jhope! His danceline are so freaking clean and his sense of beat always gets me!
I'm always excited to learn more about dance whenever I see a new video from you! I don't have enough foundation in any style to really freestyle well, but I default to footwork :)
i'm so so happy you included feeldog and euijin!!! i don't see enough people mentioning them when talking about professional dancers in the kpop industry!!!
i always found freestyling so interesting, it's so differently structured from improv in classical and contemporary dance and i feel there are many unsaid "rules", both about the music and interaction with the audience (especially in battles)
by this video i hope everyone can start appreciate more to freestylers/ street dancers because some people especially who knows nothing about dance saying freestylers can’t dance compare to commercial dancers which is two different styles 🥲
soul’s dance style needs to be more talked abt ‼️i personally think he is one of the best dancers in 4th gen - he is so young yet so good. he has amazing isolation. i’m glad you mentioned him in this vid bc if you didin’t i would be disappointed LMAO. his freestyle is really good too. im primarily a choreo dancer who's interested in freestyles / has watched a lot of battles and i really learned a lot from this video !! i love how it's so easy to understand possibly even for non dancers
this is such a fantastic video. thanks so much for yet another one. I've subscribed. thanks for once again including Hobi. I wish he would show us what he can really do instead of giving just these tiny glimpses. you included some of my other favorite idol dancers as well, like Hyoyeon, Ten, Chung Ha, Jo Kwon (!! didn't expect to see him here lol), and Hanbin. everyone you showed is so super talented. I know she's not really a freestyler, but I'd love to see BoA showcased in your videos sometime. she's a legend.
Oh I enjoyed this so much! Was wonderful seeing all the love for all different kinds of freestyles and it was super informative. Especially appreciated the hayoung shoutout because it totally slipped my mind that she'd be perfect for this video 😅 Also JJ my love❤ He brings me so much joy (i miss seeing him dance so much)

i love your videos so much 😭 i think dance is so fascinating but i have absolutely zero foundation or experience so there’s a lot of things to learn about
I absolutely love your channel. I've always been very very interested in dance but have never really gotten around to actually trying it, but it's clear you really know what you're talking about. I also really appreciate you not allowing bias to get in the way of appreciating someone's talent, I see that happening so often and its upsetting. Keep up the good work!
I’ve always loved to dance. I still do, but I always felt more comfortable doing freestyle. I see my friends learn all these kpop choreos and altough I admire their talent and effort, it is something that has never appealed to me. I don’t feel like I can be original or express myself and not only that, I’ve always been bad at learning them. Probably with practice I could get a better muscle memory, but… nothing beats the feeling of doing a sick movement out of nowhere and surprise yourself enjoying the song. Nothing beats that for me. Many people (especially in the kpop community) has tried to belittle my talent because I can’t dance choreos, but then these are the same people that make the same 5 steps in a freestyle dance. Funny enough, this video has reminded me of the beauty of freestyling and to pay these people no mind. Happy dancing everyone, whatever kind you do💖
I've seen you use Harry June as lovely examples in quite a lot of your videos! Would you ever do a dance analysis of DKB? Considering how they're self-choreographed and really refreshing for a boygroup. I do think they're awesome in terms of energy and teamwork, this was especially pointed out in Peak Time. Would really love to hear your professional/personal opinion on them ❤
i'm in a predominantly waacking team and the way you explained the genre was on point! a lot of times people overlook a few things here and there about the dance style, but you make it make sense for those who haven't been completely exposed to the "dance world." i love watching your videos because i learn more about dance myself. this is why i gravitate towards hanbin and chungha. i like seeing how their waacking habits translate to kchoreo. it's so interesting to watch for me. i personally am new to waacking (on my third year). such a fun watch! i plan on doing battles soon 🥰
i've been thinking about that 5000 round a lot recently because i've been rewatching smf in preparation for swf2 lol and you definitely increased my understanding of his freestyle!! :)
THANK U SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO i'm a self taught dancer and i have a hard time learning choreos because I don't have enough space and I'm not able to practice enough to make them feel like mine so i end up practicing dance with freestyle and it kinda made me feel like i was cheating as if i wasn't a real dancer, kinda dumb to think this but seeing this video reminded me what got me to dance in first place: seeing freestyle battles
Would love too see an analysis video on SVT (i know u have done one on their choreographies) but specifically the performance unit, Hoshi, Jun, Minghao and Dino! They have very different styles so i think it would be fun to watch :)
Kindly recomend you to watch Hyo - sober. There's english version too. Her freestyle dance in mv is so incredible, i dont know what style it is but that's really impressive for me and I really like it. Hyo said it by herself that she dace it free style. Anyways she has a lot of free style dances and she danced with many types.
Hayong from fromis9 is so cool i 've rarely seen female idols do dancing in hip hop beacuse of the obvious 'female idol stereotype' its honestly so refreshing it sucks that shes under rated
joy's freestyle to havana was very impressive to me for an idol not known for dancing. sure, it wasn't very technical, but she kept it entertaining with storytelling
I have never seriously learned any type of dance but I looove watching people dance and learn about dance so I really liked your video. I must say that I usually skip the freestyle dance section on most shows because it makes me kinda anxious sometimes but after watching this video it makes me want to start watching more because it looks fun and impressive when done well.
Loove this video, I've truly been enjoying your channel so much. I'm not really a dancer myself but I've been a big fan for the past 13 years or so. I hate to be that person, but if you ever run out of footage/examples, I don't think I've seen you mention the guys in A.C.E. They all have very different foundations and experience but they've done some freestyle sessions together and seem to work well in learning from each other. Excited about the musicality short, I'm blanking on a good example but I do feel like those with deeper understanding of music really can gain something from it, which gives an interesting edge to some idols.
I actually did include a clip from ace in one of my earlier videos, I think in the dance analysis criteria one. I wonder if some of their dance content might be gone with vlive? Because I couldn't find that much when I was looking for material for this video. I did want to include them originally
@@facts_in_fiction Oooh yes you're right, my bad! Now that you mention it you're probably right unfortunately. I think the last couple of times I've seen those clips were probably in compilations.. They've been very active on instagram now that a couple of them are out of the military so I hope we get some new things from them soon☺
I've only ever done improv really, as I don't really have a good enough background in any technique used in battling (also it seems really scary). I hope that one day I will be able to battle, as the creative aspect is really interesting to me. In contemporary/modern dance (at least in my experience) improv is more about feeling good as well as generating ideas for choreography, which is more what I'm used to.
I'm sure you can do it one day! In open style choreo, most of my teachers also used freestyle to create choreo or to get the main ideas (and that's also how I do it now when I choreograph/make a routine for class lol)
I've already been wanting to improve my freestyling, and this video really made me want to even more! I love your content so much! It's always so inspiring, and I always learn something.
That is so interesting. I have seen my ult group (A.C.E) do a lot of freestyle since 3 out of the 5 of them have a strong dancing background and they used to do freestyle battles in their busking days and while watching this video it started making sense to me how different their styles are. It would be so so interesting if you could do a video on them as well?
This video is amazingly well done and ur super knowledgeable which is such a breath of fresh air in the kpop fandom! Alot of ppl claim to be professional or knowledgeable in dance when you can tell they're just not.... I appreciate this as a (unprofessional) dancer and kpop fan😊
Awesome video! If you do a part 2, could you please include ENHYPEN’s Ni-ki? I’m not a dancer but I’ve been a kpop fan for a long time and he is one of the few idols I get impressed in terms of dancing skills ❤

I'm only partway through this video and I know less than zero things about dance but that clip of Lip J starting about 13:27 grabbed me by the NECK omg and I had to stop and go look for that whole dance battle. The SWAG! And now I'm on a TH-cam rabbit hole finding more of Lip J dancing [fans self] okay, gonna watch the rest of the video now :P Edit: okay I'm done haha. Like I said, I know less than zero things about dance, and your video explained your concepts very clearly and helped guide me in what I was even looking at/looking for with the example videos. Thank you, this was both entertaining and very educational! (Also psssst for Jimin slight typo on the group he's from ^^;;; )
Jhopes freestyles are my favorite! I had just rewatched a ton of it when this video got recommended to me and I just love his dancing so much. It’s so fucking satisfying to watch, it’s insane!
Thank you very much for the video, it was very informative and I appreciated all the visual examples. I started taking various dance style classes a couple of months ago and sometimes we would also have short freestyling sessions at the end. It was hard for me to put into words why some seem more interesting and appealing, except for the basic appreciation for fluidity of moves and transitions, musicality and creativity. But i feel that after watching this video, I got a better grasp of it.
I'm a self-taught dancer, mostly just learning from tutorials, videos, choreos, and drilling over and over again. That might be why for freestyling I tend to kinda default to something that's a variation of whatever I learned most recently. It's VERY frustrating to be trying to freestyle and only able to come up with waacking basics or something like that and not be able to get creative. Usually if I give myself more variety for a couple weeks my body will naturally acclimate the basics into the freestyle, but was wondering if this is something everyone experiences...
thanks for this video!!! I would love to see your thoughts on p1harmony, they're such an interesting group to watch perform and have some really dynamic dancers!

Hayoung for me.. I really like her flow and transition. Idk about the dance techniques but I appreciate hers.
That J hope clip was him at 2am just chilling and he's still absolutely tearing up the floor. I wish his new upcoming hope on the street documentary would show even more impressive freestyling and potentially choreography making from him.
I really enjoy to watch Ten freestyle dance 🔥
j-hope all the way. love his angst in dancing🔥
all his freestyle session from his IG stories and weverse lives are saved in my phone. the first time that i saw him danced was from that "kiki do you love me" challenge (i forgot the title). fell inlove with him since then
@@hope88545gfdSame! I’m literally so obsessed with his dance, as if it’s an specific genre of art itself ❤️🔥
J-hope is soooooooooo good, FREESTYLE KING🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
can't wait for his dancing documentary "hope on the street"🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really recommend checking out Mingi from Ateez freestyle. He did a dance live where he freestyled for almost an hour. The whole thing was really fun and he’s super amazing, but the stand outs in my opinion were when he danced to:
No Diggity (5:10)
on the street (17:25)
What it is (26:50)
Shoong! (47:35)
Thank you for the analysis vids, they are super helpful for understanding some fundamentals in dance for non-dancers! ❤
Ten one of fav in freestyle! Thank you for your analysis
I love that you talked about 5000! His freestyle really has so many intricacies that I think a lot of people tend to miss when they watch battles - especially when he was battling krumpers - that are so fun to break down and analyze.
Yes! Honestly inspiring
woah such an in depth video !! i loved seeing sung hanbin as an example, hes a very captivating dancer to me (and lipJ too!!)
I didn't know about him (except hearing his name) and omg he's so talented, incredibly fun to watch
J-Hope is an insane dancer!
All I wish is to see way more of his dance …
i love jimin from bulletproof warriors
Why do I only notice spelling errors after uploading lmao
Lmao
A pretty much long video but thank you for your effort.
Jhope and soul have to be my combo for freestyle among idols. I love watching them esp Jhope! His danceline are so freaking clean and his sense of beat always gets me!
I'm always excited to learn more about dance whenever I see a new video from you! I don't have enough foundation in any style to really freestyle well, but I default to footwork :)
Thanks for sharing!
i'm so so happy you included feeldog and euijin!!! i don't see enough people mentioning them when talking about professional dancers in the kpop industry!!!
i always found freestyling so interesting, it's so differently structured from improv in classical and contemporary dance and i feel there are many unsaid "rules", both about the music and interaction with the audience (especially in battles)
This video was so interesting! I love the way Ten moves, but all of these were so cool!
by this video i hope everyone can start appreciate more to freestylers/ street dancers because some people especially who knows nothing about dance saying freestylers can’t dance compare to commercial dancers which is two different styles 🥲
soul’s dance style needs to be more talked abt ‼️i personally think he is one of the best dancers in 4th gen - he is so young yet so good. he has amazing isolation. i’m glad you mentioned him in this vid bc if you didin’t i would be disappointed LMAO. his freestyle is really good too. STAN P1HARMONY Y’ALL
Thanks for including 5000, Lip J, Feeldog, and Sung Hanbin in here ❤
im primarily a choreo dancer who's interested in freestyles / has watched a lot of battles and i really learned a lot from this video !! i love how it's so easy to understand possibly even for non dancers
j-hope is so much more than yall seen...
this is such a fantastic video. thanks so much for yet another one.
Especially appreciated the hayoung shoutout because it totally slipped my mind that she'd be perfect for this video 😅
Also JJ my love❤ He brings me so much joy (i miss seeing him dance so much)
Super informative video! Ur the hero of kpop dance "opinions" on youtube lol
Lmao thank you
My fav dancers are momo and soul from p1harmony
Taste!
no one freestyles the way j-hope freestyles he is crazy 😭 beat american hiphop dancers on their own turf
You're really pushing it
@@8luvbug would you like to elaborate? or explain why me giving credit where credit is due is a problem for you?
@@brianna6309 If you think Jhope beats the ogs at their own turf then you're extremely delusional. Give credit without being delusional
@@8luvbug what does them being an original have to do with dancing skill? he is better than them, and there’s actually evidence to prove that. funnily enough, his dance documentary where he travels around the world to do different styles of dance is coming out the end of this month! stay tuned. ❤️
@@8luvbug he literally DID beat them on their own turf 💀💀 you can search it and watch it yourself! j-hope dance battle american hustle life
I really like the way you commented on all the little details but I was waiting from soul (p1h) and mingi (ateez) cause especially souls freestyle is sooo good! In general p1h has some really good freestylers :)
i looove this video, i learned a lot!! also thanks for adding trainee a’s members even tho there are still trainees
i really want you to make a video on just fundamentals of dance. its so interesting and you know explain things so well
Different styles have different fundamentals 😅
@@facts_in_fiction Ik, i was asking for a general basic fundamental?😭😭will that be possible? If not in the future if u make a series on fundamental of dance or smth id still be eager for it! thanks always for your hard work💞
i love your videos so much 😭 i think dance is so fascinating but i have absolutely zero foundation or experience so there’s a lot of things to learn about
I absolutely love your channel.
Happy dancing everyone, whatever kind you do💖
i just hope ten can show more of his dancing skill🥺
me too I wish he were able to attend Great Dance Crew season 2 again Im so mad sme declined the offer 😭
@@foreversolely SM tried their hardest to keep Ten from being famous.
Would really love to hear your professional/personal opinion on them ❤
Taeyong is good in freestyle too. There are a lot of videos of him doing different styles
i'm in a predominantly waacking team and the way you explained the genre was on point! a lot of times people overlook a few things here and there about the dance style, but you make it make sense for those who haven't been completely exposed to the "dance world." i love watching your videos because i learn more about dance myself. this is why i gravitate towards hanbin and chungha. i like seeing how their waacking habits translate to kchoreo. it's so interesting to watch for me. i personally am new to waacking (on my third year). such a fun watch! i plan on doing battles soon 🥰
Good luck!
YAY!! Soul is mention in the freestyle video.
Love how you broke it down so easily for us to understand
i've been thinking about that 5000 round a lot recently because i've been rewatching smf in preparation for swf2 lol and you definitely increased my understanding of his freestyle!! :)
honestly same, i even rewatched BMbtious just to fall in love AGAIN with 5000 and RTH.
Omg that legendary clip of Minzy has me falling in love every time I see it ♥️
I'm so happy when I see your videos, it teaches me a lot about dance !
It's always so inspiring, and I always learn something.
i really love to watch hanbin dance, he captivated me and now i'm at his feet
Thank you for doing this video! I really enjoyed learning more about freestyle and well known freestyle dancers!
Let's just say that you're one of my most favorite TH-cam channels.
So glad you mentioned feeldog!
He’s so criminally underrated
i feel like root's musicality is really good, it would be interesting to see you discuss/debrief his dances even just a little!
This video is amazingly well done and ur super knowledgeable which is such a breath of fresh air in the kpop fandom! Alot of ppl claim to be professional or knowledgeable in dance when you can tell they're just not.... I appreciate this as a (unprofessional) dancer and kpop fan😊
Thank you for making this video! There were several points when I went to go hit the like button but I had already hit it earlier 😂
I have never had someone explain something so well.
Fantastic video!! I’m a beginner and learning so much
Awesome video! If you do a part 2, could you please include ENHYPEN’s Ni-ki? I’m not a dancer but I’ve been a kpop fan for a long time and he is one of the few idols I get impressed in terms of dancing skills ❤
Ten is one of the best dancers in the industry. SM is so lucky to have an ace like him fr.
1. love that you included ten's freestyle with santa. i've watched that a million times i ADORE it
2. HOW HAVE I BEEN A KPOP STAN FOR 8 YEARS AND NEVER KNOWN ABOUT HAYOUNG HOW IS SHE NEVER IN ANY "BEST FEMALE KPOP DANCER" LISTS GENUINELY WHAT THE FUCK
Can you please do an analysis on BoA next 🙏🏻. She's honestly so talented.
thank you for the video!!
I'm only partway through this video and I know less than zero things about dance but that clip of Lip J starting about 13:27 grabbed me by the NECK omg and I had to stop and go look for that whole dance battle. The SWAG! And now I'm on a TH-cam rabbit hole finding more of Lip J dancing [fans self] okay, gonna watch the rest of the video now :P
Edit: okay I'm done haha. Like I said, I know less than zero things about dance, and your video explained your concepts very clearly and helped guide me in what I was even looking at/looking for with the example videos. Thank you, this was both entertaining and very educational! (Also psssst for Jimin slight typo on the group he's from ^^;;; )
Thank you! Lip J is really amazing
Thank you for this video, I learned a lot. Can you also make a video about choreographies made by kpop idols?
Jhopes freestyles are my favorite! I had just rewatched a ton of it when this video got recommended to me and I just love his dancing so much. It’s so fucking satisfying to watch, it’s insane!
Shindong from SuJu is actually a pretty amazing freestyle (and choreo) dancer! Just loove his movements
Seriously can you be my teacher?? Like I get more information about dancing styles from you than my actual teacher
Thank you! Good luck on your dance journey
Usually if I give myself more variety for a couple weeks my body will naturally acclimate the basics into the freestyle, but was wondering if this is something everyone experiences...
thank you for this! i really like the content you make
thanks for this video!!! I would love to see your thoughts on p1harmony, they're such an interesting group to watch perform and have some really dynamic dancers!
my hyoyeon💗
JIMIN is magnificent to treat to watch
I love your videos it helps so much
lip j is art
I love your videos would love to see a nct dance ranking or breakdown they're all very talented dancers I think it would be interesting
Taeyong is one of my favorite freestylers in kpop
When it comes to female idols, Minzy is the golden standard for freestyling.
