Dont use fishing line, I know it's almost invisible, but use cotton thread, or sisal twine or similar which will biodegrade! Birds frequently get tangled up in fishing line and end up dying
I have bamboo, probably 30 years old that never been pruned. Its really dense and about 2 meters wide. How do I prune it? Can I cut it all down to the ground?
...I have Giant Yellow Stripped Bamboo....and it has been getting taller over the years....so I don't think all bamboo grows to it's full height in one season ?....
thanks for your wonderful advice! I've been searching youtube for an hour looking for help on this. my aunt has about 500 bamboo plants along her fence line that she wants cut down. I'm debating what to do with them. thanks again
So instead of cutting off the top of a cane (is cane and shoot the same thing?), we shut just cut it off flush with the ground? My issue is that it's somewhat drooping and growing way too tall.
Root pruning and root guard installation is the best way to control bamboo. Root guards are heavy plastic trenches that are sunk around the bamboo. Roots will find a way around these eventually, just keep digging them out.
You're good. Nice concise instructions. Thanks a lot. One more thing... you mentioned the genetic height of my bamboo - are you suggesting that when the new shoots comes through to their full height, that will be the highest my whole bamboo plant will ever get? Or might some sibling shoots come through taller the year after?
@plantamnesty Thank you for the clarification, I was going to ask the same question As I misinterpreted in the video that you were saying it would reach mature height in the first season. And I was scratching my head wondering how then Bamboo’s diameter. Changes so vastly. Since they are genetically coded and we don’t know what their determined height is, is there any best practice to try and then the tallest ones out if you want shorter ones? i’ve just been taking a two person practice and someone keeps wiggling until we find the tallest one and that’s the one we cut, LOL. Not very scientific
We bought a few Miniature Clumping Bamboos from the Nursery but in a couple of years they are as tall as our house. How can you stop them from growing & growing & growing. And how do you clean out the dead leaves easily at the bottom of the plant .,, it looks so untidy.?
I like the dead leaves at the bottom. Gives it that forest floor look. What I read is that as those leaves return to the earth it feeds the bamboo as they are rich in nutrients. Good luck
I think Cass Turnbull is great! I may have to checkout the last copy of your first book from our public library and say I lost it and pay the fee because I loved it and want a copy. It's out of print.
I loved the way you addressed this information. Your tone in saying "futile" was great. Thanks for the dense information.
Good video! You packed everything I wanted to know about pruning bamboo into three minutes. Well done.
Cass! Superb video--thoroughly enjoyed and thank you for your bamboo inspired adventure! x x

Thank you! Many of these videos were made years ago. It is always good to keep up with current practice.
Thank you very much for this! I have a patch of bamboo that needs tending and I had no clue what to do.
What is the proper time of year for bamboo pruning or harvest?
I often "whack my bamboo off". 😂
Great video. Thank you

Helpful video, thanks. What causes yellow bamboo to have black spotted marks on the stalk and what to do? Oh, it is not mold?

@@tinainnca yes, it took a few years (maybe a little more than 5 years) for our Green Panda to get to full height. Didn't happen in first season.
Many thanks. Good vid.
