The gag with Leon sitting in Sadler's chair was moved to Salazar's Castle in the remake. It's the room where you get dropped through the floor in a cutscene. If you come back later, you can sit in the chair, and he does the pose from the original game.
And I like that it's made a bit more goofy because there's a couple chickens running around (so you can get and egg to vandalize a Salazar portrait for a Merchant request).
In Resident Evil 5 there is also this gag with Chris near the end of the game. In the final chapter on the ship Chris can sit in the chair before riding down the elevator with Sheva.
I realized how the Merchant travels between dimensions... He's actually the Shredder and his best buddy Krang has been helping him going in and out of dimensions.
"You talk too much" *Shoots Salazar* I don't find that silly, that's realistic. Anyone who survived that far would stopped being scared and just fed up with the bad guys monologuing.
There is a cannon reason why the cult won't deal the merchant. When Ashley is dealing with the knights on her own she repels them with a lamp. The merchant usually has a lamp on his table or a lamp nearby emitting a purple flame which possibly is repelling them.
Oooh, great spot. I was about to say, "it makes perfect sense," but I should _probably_ caveat that, "within the bonkers internal logic of the Resident Evil universe," which is ultimately what matters.
That is what I think, and the red light of the Summoner seems to power them up so low light enhances stronger light hurts? But I will say the only annoying thing is that the merchant in the Audience Hall the enemies can get around him.
At first I thought "Yeah, so there's is a reason in his backstory about how he... Hooo it's just the lamps thing"... But after a second I was like, you know what, that detail of the lamps it's still a great "so that's why..." Moment.

I really appreciated the added detail and context in the remake. Like Bitores Mendez getting some background info, which tells us that he was the village priest and a genuinely good and kind man before he got infested. What happened to him and the villagers feels more tragic in the remake. Same with Salazar, whose family used to contain the plagas, but Ramon instead chose to embrace them. I'm also curious about the ending in which Ada apparently chooses not to bring the plagas sample to Wesker. If we ever get a RE 5 remake, I wonder how that will affect the story setup.

He ‘s a fun old dude who has mysterious ties to the village and the world outside. The remake sounds like who I imagine the Duke is friends with whereas the original is the guy they would rip off

They’ve really improved a great deal on this game’s remake and I hope from the bottom of my heart the next remakes they decide to create going forward have this much care put into them, especially if they’re gonna remake code Veronica, 5 and 6.
I just love that the merchant's got his OWN famous lines. If this wasn't Capcom and was a Build engine game from the 90's, he'd be saying "I'd buy that for a dollar!" and other action movie quotes. Speaking of, when you're shooting all those Flood parasites and making the naked zombies go boom, it's a shame Leon doesn't say "Hey don't go to pieces on me" every single time.
31:37 - U3 is being saved for the Ada DLC, think about it, Ada's DLC didn't have much to do in it, it hardly had any boss fights, so saving the U3 for her adventures makes sense as there is still a U3 note in the remake talking about the U3 being a thing.

Fun fact, the steam versions of the OG RE4 runs at 60 FPS, which screws up the quick time events and makes them harder the QTE at the end of the mine cart section one of the hardest, as well as the statue chase one.

Really appreciate the direct comparisons between the remake and the original. I know Angry Joe never played the original (besides an hour of the VR version), and his viewpoint of an outsider approaching the remake on its own is still valid, but this is a much better approach. I think the remake EXPECTS you to have played and replayed the original multiple times, the changes and additions are way more meaningful and you get more out of the remake.
While I’m personally not a fan of horror, I’m always eager to hear about the games you have a passion for. There’s something cool about hearing others’ love for games that I would technically never play 😊

As a 26 year old who didn't grow up playing many videogames, I played the original three years ago for the first time and loved it. It's definitely one of my favorite games now. I can attest that while a little clunky and old in some aspects, most of it holds up well and is still very fun to play. As far as gameplay goes, I don't see the remake as being too necessary. It's mostly a choice in story: if you like the dumb, fun, and funny version, the original is a good call. If you want a more serious, horror-driven, and moody version, the remake is your ticket.
Yay! I can't wait to watch this later. I wasn't allowed to play M rated games until I graduated from high school, so no Resident Evil for me. But I always love listening to your perspective specifically because your passion combined with your research always makes your videos fascinating. The original is wonderful CAPCOM nostalgia, but I do like the modernized take on RE4's story that now ties elements from the game's lore together. I think I also heard that it's now been retconned that Umbrella was inspired to create their NE-α Type Parasites aka Nemesis because they learned of the Plaga, so now they do have a bigger connection to the overall narrative of the games. Course, the G-Virus was also a parasitic life form. So it's not as if parasites were a new thing to RE when 4 came about... I also like Saddler's new portrayal as a sincere believer better, fits nicer this way for me. I was never really taken by the somewhat changing lore in the old games of him just wanting to trade in B.O.W.'s and his position as a cult leader was just an elaborate way to achieve this.
I want a Luis DLC. Have it turn out he actually wasnt killed by Krauser due to plagas in his blood or something and you have to fight your way off the island before it explodes. I think he is too good of a character to only be in one game.
Imagine if the merchant was actually sweet talking the cult the whole time. Like when he built that shooting gallery in the actual palace, I like to think he convinced that guy that an arcade shooting gallery would be a nice addition. "Oh yeah, you and your friends will LOVE the novelty, and it totally isn't for letting some secret agent cop guy practice blowing up your dudes later..."
Good point about the Merchant being the biggest threat to the Los plagas cult lol. To be fair everywhere you meet the merchant he has a blue flame next to his shop. So if the cult attacked him they would be frozen in place and he could just whip out a shotgun and go to town.
I don't know how many people will get this reference but it's nice to see Leon taking MeLaan's advice and (mostly) delivering his cheesy one-liners _after_ he's killed his opponent. It does, as she said, make it a lot safer (before she kicked a dead assassin in the head for added hilarity).
I honestly don't understand the appeal of remaking literally everything from Resident Evil to Dead Space to Metroid Prime and so on. I can understand remastering something, or remaking it if the original game was flawed, and only every now & then, but not as much as we've seen in recent years. as the old saying goes: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!

You can actually still sit on the chair in the Remake. It’s location has been changed to the throne room in Salazar’s castle. Great review was usual, Phelous! Been waiting for this video for a long time! Wondering if you’ll also cover Death Island now that it’s out in Blue Ray.
If you haven't already tried it, i highly recommend the RE4 HD Project. A couple of guys spent years replacing textures and models and just making the game look infinitely better. Its like a modern remaster, but its free. It also comes with mods like auto complete QTEs, different laser sights, increase FOV, better mouse & keyboard controls, and adding back Ashley's suplex and fixed camera for her solo sections. Its the definitive way to play the original.
I believe the survival horror elements of Beta RE4 would eventually be reused in a lesser-known Capcom title, Haunting Ground. Would you consider doing a retrospective on that game?
Coming back to the review, I thought getting Ashleys Las Plaga removed first was better in all ways possible. First of all: she was infected first, so it was more progressed. Second: she was already once overtaken by Saddler, it just makes much more sense. In the first game I thought it kinda made sense, cause he wanted to test it first, to see if he would survive.. but.. umm.. if he won't make it they would be screwed either way. Not much thought put into that. Another great change in my opinion, as you pointed out.
You answered your own question about the merchant, Phelous. He’s a member of the Lin Kuei so he obviously has no problem being stealthy all over the places or even being able to cross dimensions! Anyway, nice review! I’m quite happy with this remake, too, they added a lot and streamlined many things that improved the flow of the game play and general QOL. there are still areas that I don’t like and couldn’t understand as to why they were changed for the remake like the really downgraded cutscenes for the first appearance of El Gigante. The old cutscene was awesome, with how El Gigante being dragged out, reminiscent of old monster movies like King Kong and then proceeded to completely demolished the villagers. Then the remake just had the dang thing woken up like a grumpy old man. That’s it. The hand-jumping part from the Salazar statue section, while thankfully gone, I still think they could have kept how it could move and walk. They could have had the statue infected with Plagas, similar to the knights armours but only bigger, and turn it into a new boss fight. But yeah, overall it’s an easy 8 or 9 out of 10 for me! …Oh wait. The suplex doesn’t explode heads anymore. 0 out of 10!!😂
It’s pretty much a “suicide mission” for the villagers. Saddler don’t care if they live or die in order to let El Gigante loose on Leon. Not that the villagers can resist his parasitic commands either.

It's such a good time to be an RE fan. All my beloved childhood games were remade, including my favorite game ever made Resident Evil 2. All the remakes are extremely high quality, even RE3R for all its flaws is still pretty good.

43:50 To be fair, i always saw that scene as Leon testing to see if Plaga Removal tool was safe or not, so he risks his life to go through that procedure even if it kills him for Ashley's safety in the original. That being said, i have to admit Remake does vast improvement in telling its story and characters like Luis and Ashley are highlight of this game for me. Ada's good too, although her VA didn't do it for me(And no, i'm not here to harass the VA like some people on internet have and its honestly messed up. The people who went out their way to harass her are scum) Once again, you did it, Phelous and reviews do not ever disappoint :) 👏👏👏
Two things: First, the scene where Leon can sit on the chair is still in the Remake, but since there's no longer Saddler's room, it's in Salazar's throno room now. It's the same room that is part of the quest where you have to throw an egg on Salazar's patinting. Also, a continuity error, in the original after defeating Krauser you climbed a radio tower and shut down the jammer that was blocking Leon's radio calls with Hunningan. There's no equivalent thing in the Remake, the radio is jammed for almost the whole game and only in the end the connection is restaured without any explation (except maybe the fact that the whole island explodes, but I still find that lacking in the remake).

i haven't played the remake yet, but i'm glad to hear that the quicktime events are gone--i played the Wii port (my first-ever Resident Evil, actually, because i'd heard such good things about RE4 in particular) and in my numerous replays i made a point of flailing the wiimote and nunchuck around hitting every button when i got to certain quicktimes because, ESPECIALLY annoyingly, sometimes it didn't call for the same button every time i'll say that i don't like Ashley's voice as much this time around, but maybe that'll change when i get my own copy and actually play it through

The weirdest change for me was that the update to Ramón Salazar’s look. He looks less like Napoleon Bonaparte and more like Margret Thatcher.

Good point about the Merchant being the biggest threat to the Los plagas cult lol. To be fair everywhere you meet the merchant he has a blue flame next to his shop. So if the cult attacked him they would be frozen in place and he could just whip out a shotgun and go to town.

I don't know how many people will get this reference but it's nice to see Leon taking MeLaan's advice and (mostly) delivering his cheesy one-liners _after_ he's killed his opponent. It does, as she said, make it a lot safer (before she kicked a dead assassin in the head for added hilarity).

I honestly don't understand the appeal of remaking literally everything from Resident Evil to Dead Space to Metroid Prime and so on. I can understand remastering something, or remaking it if the original game was flawed, and only every now & then, but not as much as we've seen in recent years.

If you haven't already tried it, i highly recommend the RE4 HD Project. A couple of guys spent years replacing textures and models and just making the game look infinitely better. Its like a modern remaster, but its free. It also comes with mods like auto complete QTEs, different laser sights, increase FOV, better mouse & keyboard controls, and adding back Ashley's suplex and fixed camera for her solo sections. Its the definitive way to play the original.
The remake is the definitive way. Youre just blinded by nostalgia.

Coming back to the review, I thought getting Ashleys Las Plaga removed first was better in all ways possible.
First of all: she was infected first, so it was more progressed. Second: she was already once overtaken by Saddler, it just makes much more sense.
In the first game I thought it kinda made sense, cause he wanted to test it first, to see if he would survive.. but.. umm.. if he won't make it they would be screwed either way. Not much thought put into that.
Another great change in my opinion, as you pointed out.
You answered your own question about the merchant, Phelous. He’s a member of the Lin Kuei so he obviously has no problem being stealthy all over the places or even being able to cross dimensions!
Anyway, nice review! I’m quite happy with this remake, too, they added a lot and streamlined many things that improved the flow of the game play and general QOL.
there are still areas that I don’t like and couldn’t understand as to why they were changed for the remake like the really downgraded cutscenes for the first appearance of El Gigante. The old cutscene was awesome, with how El Gigante being dragged out, reminiscent of old monster movies like King Kong and then proceeded to completely demolished the villagers. Then the remake just had the dang thing woken up like a grumpy old man. That’s it.
The hand-jumping part from the Salazar statue section, while thankfully gone, I still think they could have kept how it could move and walk. They could have had the statue infected with Plagas, similar to the knights armours but only bigger, and turn it into a new boss fight.
But yeah, overall it’s an easy 8 or 9 out of 10 for me!
…Oh wait. The suplex doesn’t explode heads anymore. 0 out of 10!!😂
It never really made sense to me how a few villagers were supposed to physically overpower something the size of a house.
It’s pretty much a “suicide mission” for the villagers. Saddler don’t care if they live or die in order to let El Gigante loose on Leon.
Not that the villagers can resist his parasitic commands either.

It's such a good time to be an RE fan. All my beloved childhood games were remade, including my favorite game ever made Resident Evil 2.
All the remakes are extremely high quality, even RE3R for all its flaws is still pretty good.

43:50 To be fair, i always saw that scene as Leon testing to see if Plaga Removal tool was safe or not, so he risks his life to go through that procedure even if it kills him for Ashley's safety in the original. That being said, i have to admit Remake does vast improvement in telling its story and characters like Luis and Ashley are highlight of this game for me. Ada's good too, although her VA didn't do it for me(And no, i'm not here to harass the VA like some people on internet have and its honestly messed up. The people who went out their way to harass her are scum)

Two things:
First, the scene where Leon can sit on the chair is still in the Remake, but since there's no longer Saddler's room, it's in Salazar's throno room now. It's the same room that is part of the quest where you have to throw an egg on Salazar's patinting.
Also, a continuity error, in the original after defeating Krauser you climbed a radio tower and shut down the jammer that was blocking Leon's radio calls with Hunningan. There's no equivalent thing in the Remake, the radio is jammed for almost the whole game and only in the end the connection is restaured without any explation (except maybe the fact that the whole island explodes, but I still find that lacking in the remake).
Don’t know if anyone said, but in the remake you can still sit in Saddler’s chair :)

i haven't played the remake yet, but i'm glad to hear that the quicktime events are gone--i played the Wii port (my first-ever Resident Evil, actually, because i'd heard such good things about RE4 in particular) and in my numerous replays i made a point of flailing the wiimote and nunchuck around hitting every button when i got to certain quicktimes because, ESPECIALLY annoyingly, sometimes it didn't call for the same button every time
i'll say that i don't like Ashley's voice as much this time around, but maybe that'll change when i get my own copy and actually play it through
You gotta wonder will Capcom remake RE 5 & 6, next?
Also when they run out of Resident Evils to remake, I want them to remake Dino-Crisis!
