  • Keepers of the Wild is a vintage documentary on Dublin Zoo, celebrating the work of its keepers. Filmed in April 1997, as the park was undergoing a new development plan with a greater focus on animal welfare, conservation and education.
Produced as my end of year project in Coláiste Dhúlaigh course in Communications and Media production. This is a VHS transfer from a Betacam SP master. Due to the archive nature of this material, picture and sound quality may vary.

Amazing documentary, thank you for the upload. Its great to see the care, enthusiasm, and passion of the keepers, especially with the husbandry training. We are always innovating and thinking of new ways to marry the educational value and conservation value of zoos, in a non exploitative manner. I'd love to know their perspectivw on the role of a zoo in the modern world, where we can just watch HD footage of animals in the wild. Is there really a need for carnivorous hunting pack animals like lions to live in a random european city? Does every city really need a zoo? How do we decide? But at the same time one can't deny the amazing strides that zoos have taken with regard to welfare, breeding programs, and conservation of endangered species. Interesting topic for sure.
