This show seems to purposely make every scene where Denji tries to do sexual things uncomfortable instead of fan service, which is VERY uncommon for shounen. The scene with power, his kiss, even him chilling in the bed with wasted ass Himeno. It also shows every one constantly abusing their power dynamic over him. He may have gotten off the streets, but other people are still running his life in super fucked up ways.
So you must have ignore the scenes with him and Makima. It doesn’t make every scene uncomfortable, some sure but not all. Also Power doesn’t have a power dynamic over him… Sure some scenes are uncomfortable but they make every scene how Denji would feel, which is why none of the Makima scenes are as off putting as other scenes.

This! While I was reading the manga I did feel a bit uncomfortable with the Himeno scene but then moved on pretty quickly and didn't reflect about it until way later. But the anime took it to another level. The music, Denji's confusion and dizziness and Himeno's clear emotional advantage over this 16 year old had me stemming with anxiety for the entire exchange. I think the anime made a good job of conveying it as a human interaction with multiple feelings and motivations involved instead of a quick fanservice (which is the thing I really appreciated about CSM and hoped the anime managed to adapt correctly). imo it only depends on if the viewer understands the situation and doesn't get carried away on the fact that CSM its a shōnen and so "this must be fanservice".
Don't worry about feeling uncomfortable about it because it is supposed to be uncomfortable. A common thread in these episodes is how Denji is used by others for their own gain. Himeno is clearly sexually frustrated because of her feelings for Aki, and her being drunk doesn't help with that at all. Denji needs someone who really loves him.
People talk about Kobeni's life being constant suffering, but nobody ever talks about just how fucked over Denji is in every possible way. My man literally never catches a single break in the entire series.

I love how every time Denji achieves his goal so far, it's always not what he was expecting. It can be so hard to watch Denji being taken advantage of though. Throughout these 7 episodes, they've been drip feeding us info on his upbringing or well lack of it. Not only is he young, but honestly he's probably even younger mentally. No education, no friends (except Pochita), no parental figure. Denji's a bit of out of it probably from dehydration+ she gave him alcohol in that kiss. I think it's supposed to be weird. It's like every woman in Denji's life has been manipulating him.
While none of the character's age aside from Denji, Kobeni, and Arai were ever explicitly said, devil hunters typically start young and die young. Start young as in, straight out of high school (this will get explored in the latter half of Part 1 and in Part 2 of the series). Aki is likely just entering twenty, while Himeno is in her early to mid twenties. Makima is likely around mid to late twenties, thirty at most. Power's actual age is likely very ancient, since she's the Blood Devil. It's just that the corpse she took over was that of a teenager. The obvious age gap of the other cast compared to Denji is deliberate to show how much power everyone else has over his inexperienced and emotionally stunted self. A little fun fact: Fujimoto, the author of Chainsaw Man, has explicitly stated that he's an M and that he likes girls that are mean and talk down to him. But at the same time, he acknowledges just how unhealthy that unbalanced power dynamic is in an actual relationship. And he's showing that message through the character of Denji and how everyone keeps taking advantage of his innocence. Some fantasies should remain in the realm of roleplaying for a reason.

All of the fan service in this show has been made to make you uncomfortable or just unamused like with Himeno’s and Power. The only real fan service is when Makima was alone with Denji which makes sense because in Denji’s perspective she’s the only one to have actually lived up to his expectations of what sex and that kind of stuff feels like, inadvertently confirming his loyalties
Yeah there's...a lot of tonal whiplash this episode certainly. It's pretty messed up, which I'm sure it's supposed to be. At least, that's how I always interpreted it when I first read the manga.
No one knows how old who is as the author never spoke about it. The only thing we know is Denji being 16. What is for sure is that Aki, Himeno, Makima, and everyone else is 20+ as they are drinking alcohol.
Chainsaw Man explores taboo in a way that's meant to be uncomfortable. That's the point. It's careful not to actually fetishize the taboo subject manner, but it constantly gets so close you think it *might* cuz it will go further than you think it would, but then it backs off. I don't mean for that to sound like a spoiler with this scene specifically, but it's something to keep in mind with this series in general. IMO, it's part of what makes Fujimoto such an outstanding author. Hooks you in with zany bloody fantasy violence and uses that to explore very real problems in the world. Already these 7 episodes have at least brought up debt slavery, trauma, coping with death, manipulation, mass violence, betrayal, sex, what it means to have goals, and getting kicked really hard in the balls. And it will continue to explore all these topics in more detail but with nuance and maturity that follows the roughly maturing Denji. Which is gonna be unsteady and seem too fast at times, or not fast enough, cuz that's what growing up is like. It's the true core of what makes Denji relatable, his unsteady growth in the unsteady world around him.
As someone who is caught up with the CSM manga, I do have to agree with a lot of these comments that the scene is supposed to be uncomfortable, that it's not an idealized sexual fantasy that's supposed to flow accordingly.
These characters live in a hellhole of a universe where devils with unfathomable powers roam everywhere, dying is as common as waking up every morning, therefore these characters have multiple levels of trauma that coincidentally combine and transpire into what happened here, and this does not excuse or validate real life grooming because "it was a combination of unfortunate events". Denji is also clearly realizing that his fantasies are not going according to plan which follows the greater overall themes of manipulation, human desire and how your feelings change as you grow older. I do think that, while Fujimoto's writing is extremely controversial and dark, his depictions of "right" and "wrong" are self aware and compelling. That's why I urge you to continue watching.
In other words, much like Fujimoto's manga Fire Punch (which is WAY EDGIER), he depicts wildly apocalyptic scenarios that result in flawed human behavior. And Himeno is definitely a flawed character. I see this show through a looking glass rather than wishing I was any of these characters :-)
P.S. not to shit on people's taste and/or kinks but this is why I accept Fujimoto's writing but get uncomfortable by lolicon or shotas :-) because THOSE things feel way more like sexual fantasies than THIS but that's besides the point.

I'm a manga reader and I KNEW it was coming and it STILL made me want to go sit next to Denji at the toilets. It was so much worse seeing it animated. I'm not normally susceptible to gross stuff but THAT right there pushed my limits... 🤢
As a manga reader I am honestly incredibly proud of Mappa's work here. The "Vomit Kiss" is one of the big moments that everyone remembers, so getting it right was CRUCIAL.
Oh and it IS a bit weird of Himeno to do what she's doing, she's easily in her mid 20s at least...but that's the point. It's a common point that he's being manipulated by different people to varying degrees (from the yakuza originally to Makima now to Himeno). He's a dumb kid who's even more disconnected from regular 16 year olds because of his childhood, so a big part of the story is him growing and learning.
I always feel weird when people get so hung up about the ending of this episode. This boy gets brutally murdered and cut to pieces in episode one, then gets an ultimatum to face the literal horrors of the human mind or get killed by the government but sex is the morally weird thing? I guess it is a cultural difference with sex being this big no no in the USA. Obviously I do not mean to say that sex between an adult and a minor is nothing bad but in the context of this show it really is the lowest offender. I just can´t see Denji as this minor that needs to be protected from sex when just at the beginning of this episode he had to jump into a pit of pain, guts and violence for three straight days and the others wanting to kill and sacrifice him to get out. It´s the same concept as military service and alcohol: You can legally enlist and train to professionally kill people and drive engines of destruction like a tank and get send to war but you can´t drink a fucking beer. It´s ridiculous if you ask me.

Yeah, Denji's age is inconsistent, because we can assume by now that devils knew the chainsaw devil before, the eternity devil even said he was way weaker now, this helps understanding episode 1, when pochita was shot when he met Denji, which implies he fought the gun devil and lost, (losing his powers?) Which also means he met Denji 13 years ago. Also, Denji struggles to read, which means he was 7-8 when his life turned for the worst, meaning 13+7-8=20-21.

Toxic masculinity isn't real. There are toxic traits some men have, but it doesn't exist for the majority. To insinuate that masculinity is an inherently toxic thing is ironically a very toxic belief to hold. The characters in Chainsaw man are generally terrible people, but they have characteristics that make them likable. I like Himeno as a character a lot, but I know she is not mentally healthy in the slightest and her actions towards Denji are morally disgusting and there is no getting around that.

Funny how, after 6 episodes of criticising Denji for being a horn dog and being really immature, you suddenly remember he’s a ‘child’ (well, not under European law, but whatever).
In japan at that time you're not legally an adult until age 20, when you can drink. They just lowered it to 18 this year (but you still can't drink until 20)
He would still be a child in Europe? 16 is a child. 16 can *consent* in Europe but they are still a minor. Hell. You're not a proper adult at 18 let's be real. You're just legally one but maturity wise and developmentally, you have 7 more years to go.

The fact that Chainsaw is probably the only few shounen anime that actually handles scenes like this and shows everyone how uncomfortable the situation is and addresses it instead of just using it as a joke.
All of the fan service in this show has been made to make you uncomfortable or just unamused like with Himeno’s and Power. The only real fan service is when Makima was alone with Denji which makes sense because in Denji’s perspective she’s the only one to have actually lived up to his expectations of what sex and that kind of stuff feels like, inadvertently confirming his loyalties

Yeah there's...a lot of tonal whiplash this episode certainly. It's pretty messed up, which I'm sure it's supposed to be. At least, that's how I always interpreted it when I first read the manga.
Dating on a calendar was needed to harvest efficiently it's been around forever. Keeping track of times would then be possible to track ages as well

No one knows how old who is as the author never spoke about it. The only thing we know is Denji being 16. What is for sure is that Aki, Himeno, Makima, and everyone else is 20+ as they are drinking alcohol.
Chainsaw Man explores taboo in a way that's meant to be uncomfortable. That's the point. It's careful not to actually fetishize the taboo subject manner, but it constantly gets so close you think it *might* cuz it will go further than you think it would, but then it backs off. I don't mean for that to sound like a spoiler with this scene specifically, but it's something to keep in mind with this series in general.
IMO, it's part of what makes Fujimoto such an outstanding author. Hooks you in with zany bloody fantasy violence and uses that to explore very real problems in the world. Already these 7 episodes have at least brought up debt slavery, trauma, coping with death, manipulation, mass violence, betrayal, sex, what it means to have goals, and getting kicked really hard in the balls. And it will continue to explore all these topics in more detail but with nuance and maturity that follows the roughly maturing Denji. Which is gonna be unsteady and seem too fast at times, or not fast enough, cuz that's what growing up is like. It's the true core of what makes Denji relatable, his unsteady growth in the unsteady world around him.

As someone who is caught up with the CSM manga, I do have to agree with a lot of these comments that the scene is supposed to be uncomfortable, that it's not an idealized sexual fantasy that's supposed to flow accordingly.
These characters live in a hellhole of a universe where devils with unfathomable powers roam everywhere, dying is as common as waking up every morning, therefore these characters have multiple levels of trauma that coincidentally combine and transpire into what happened here, and this does not excuse or validate real life grooming because "it was a combination of unfortunate events". Denji is also clearly realizing that his fantasies are not going according to plan which follows the greater overall themes of manipulation, human desire and how your feelings change as you grow older. I do think that, while Fujimoto's writing is extremely controversial and dark, his depictions of "right" and "wrong" are self aware and compelling. That's why I urge you to continue watching.
In other words, much like Fujimoto's manga Fire Punch (which is WAY EDGIER), he depicts wildly apocalyptic scenarios that result in flawed human behavior. And Himeno is definitely a flawed character. I see this show through a looking glass rather than wishing I was any of these characters :-)
P.S. not to shit on people's taste and/or kinks but this is why I accept Fujimoto's writing but get uncomfortable by lolicon or shotas :-) because THOSE things feel way more like sexual fantasies than THIS but that's besides the point.

the eternity devil fight is one of my favorites in the entire series. it is simple and relatively short but such a clever solution.

I'm a manga reader and I KNEW it was coming and it STILL made me want to go sit next to Denji at the toilets. It was so much worse seeing it animated. I'm not normally susceptible to gross stuff but THAT right there pushed my limits... 🤢

As a manga reader I am honestly incredibly proud of Mappa's work here. The "Vomit Kiss" is one of the big moments that everyone remembers, so getting it right was CRUCIAL.
Oh and it IS a bit weird of Himeno to do what she's doing, she's easily in her mid 20s at least...but that's the point. It's a common point that he's being manipulated by different people to varying degrees (from the yakuza originally to Makima now to Himeno). He's a dumb kid who's even more disconnected from regular 16 year olds because of his childhood, so a big part of the story is him growing and learning.
I always feel weird when people get so hung up about the ending of this episode. This boy gets brutally murdered and cut to pieces in episode one, then gets an ultimatum to face the literal horrors of the human mind or get killed by the government but sex is the morally weird thing? I guess it is a cultural difference with sex being this big no no in the USA. Obviously I do not mean to say that sex between an adult and a minor is nothing bad but in the context of this show it really is the lowest offender. I just can´t see Denji as this minor that needs to be protected from sex when just at the beginning of this episode he had to jump into a pit of pain, guts and violence for three straight days and the others wanting to kill and sacrifice him to get out. It´s the same concept as military service and alcohol: You can legally enlist and train to professionally kill people and drive engines of destruction like a tank and get send to war but you can´t drink a fucking beer. It´s ridiculous if you ask me.

Yeah, Denji's age is inconsistent, because we can assume by now that devils knew the chainsaw devil before, the eternity devil even said he was way weaker now, this helps understanding episode 1, when pochita was shot when he met Denji, which implies he fought the gun devil and lost, (losing his powers?) Which also means he met Denji 13 years ago. Also, Denji struggles to read, which means he was 7-8 when his life turned for the worst, meaning 13+7-8=20-21.
What are you talking about? He could have been shot by anyone with a gun. Or his wounds could be from being bitten by something else, stabbed, etc.

Toxic masculinity isn't real. There are toxic traits some men have, but it doesn't exist for the majority. To insinuate that masculinity is an inherently toxic thing is ironically a very toxic belief to hold.
The characters in Chainsaw man are generally terrible people, but they have characteristics that make them likable. I like Himeno as a character a lot, but I know she is not mentally healthy in the slightest and her actions towards Denji are morally disgusting and there is no getting around that.

Just pointing out that the national age of consent in Japan is 13, which they are talking about bumping up to 16 (though that's a bottom limit -- each prefecture can set its own laws and its usually 16 or 18). So the age thing is not EXACTLY the same situation as in the U.S., though it is still uncomfortable.
Don't forget, the age of consent is much different there than in Western countries. I believe it's 14 right now, because it's an old law. There new law that has been proposed ups the age to 16. Makes you feel weird, not weird in Japan. It's a Japanese show first and foremost
