It is really refreshing to see Games Workshop encourage more and more kitbashes, but to see them actually show how one could do a unit filler is incredible. I hope they keep up this kind of positive vibe to their reboot of the old world, and don't fall back into the bad habits that saw Fantasy Battles get shafted in the first place.
That was my exact thought, unit fillers lose GW money! You're squeezing out extra units from your kits for free! It's really refreshing to have a GW that says "yeah but they're a core part of the hobby so go wild with them".
@@jlozano2615 If I remember correctly, in the White Dwarf in which they talked about it the recommandations where: 1) 25% of the bases max, 2) it must show a link to the unit (a part of skeleton exiting from the ground, 2 gobelins with a cauldron, ...) and 3) ask confirmation to the tournament organisation.
PLEASE do more from the Old World! I'd really enjoy seeing unit fillers for the various armies or your kitbashing skills take on the Bretonnians and Tomb Kings.
Chests of cursed gold, skulls or corpses on stakes, jolly roger banner with fangs, barrels of gunpowder, bits of scuttled ships made into defenses. @@akumaking1
More of this please. The Old World (Warhammer Fantasy) is a much more open playground for your talents and this sort of video will genuinely help folk out with getting large armies onto the table.
One thing to note is that a unit filler is often larger than the bases of the mini's that surround them, but this doesn't need to be the case. You can make ones that are on the same size bases as well.
Pete you absolute legend! While I love the lore and aesthetic of Warhammer, it's your videos that actually got me back into building and painting models. Godspeed.
I especially love the cart here. Being both mobile and useful for supporting the army, it should blend right in. Now I'm thinking about similar possibilities for my Legions Imperialis models-thanks for the inspiration!
for the inside of the obelisk, when the miliput is still pliable, you can stipple with crumpled up tin foil to get the chipped effect and then allow it to dry. its a lot les work than carving it out after the fact. Great video!
This was a great video and build! I'd love to see more of these for the other factions and even the ones that aren't in (Skaven / Chaos Dwarves) My idea for skaven would be to take some plasticard and cut it into flag stones and glue them onto the entire base to look like an empire street and have a manhole cover in the middle with a clan rat sticking it's head out.
Hey Pete, a lot of people have strong feelings about the old skeleton models for Tomb Kings. It would be really cool to see how you could sculpt bandages over them to turn them into Mummies, which would be a nice throwback. Looking forward to seeing some more Fantasy videos!
So gel super glue covered in baking soda makes a very nice rippling sand texture. Also little bit's of egg shell placed down before the baking soda make some convincing pottery shards.
Another cool effect would be to make smaller pillar bits floating towards the gaps like its activly pulling the broken stone from the ground. Maybe a few pieces that look like the outside of the pillar facing outwards to complete the look. You do great work. really enjoy these videos!
Please do more Old World content, perhaps some custom regiments for each of the starting factions, or conversions bringing back units where models haven’t been reclaimed and rereleased. One of my favorites of your videos was the blue landsknecht from long ago.
I think with the old world coming out you should bring back some good old Pete the wargamer painting tutorials with no kitbashing or anything. Just videos straight up focused on painting miniatures would be a breath of fresh air
Have never seen these before but it makes so much sense and adds flavor. Wish there was a way to do fillers for AoS and 40K but we lack those bases and unit formations...
I am so excited to kit bash some feudal guard with these guys. I only got 3 boxes of freeguild greatswords before they sold out so I got a veteran guard killteam made but my army proper has been put on hiatus.
I think kitbashing an Empire Grand Master or Chapter Master on a Demigryph could be a cool video. It's a unit that has rules but no model. There are a lot of Age of Sigmar units that could potentially be used. There's a lot of creative space to explore with your own Knightly Order and whatever fluff you could imagine for them.
Please make lots of old world content, makes a nice change from 40k and variety is the spice of life after all! Would love to see some Averland ( Empire ) content. Happy new year and keep up the good work Pete!:)
Please more stuff like this 💜 as someone who wasn’t able to afford an army for Warhammer fantasy the first time round, little things like unit fillers are new to me and it’s amazing to see them as a way of customising larger forves
Nice work. My biggest quibble is the I probably would have skipped the spacer rocks and painted the gaps OSL. I think the thin pin painted white would have disappeared in the effect, while the spacers... don't. But that's just me and my weirdly strong opinions on what makes a good looking floating effect... 😂
It's the difference between "rank" and "skirmish" game, honestly. Skirmish games let you do more interesting footwork with your individual models and allow for more interesting terrain, in return. Your units don't need to move around in big rectangles.
More of these please, more army specifix like vampire counnts and orcs and also more general ones i think would make for a great miniseries. I love making these for my old world display armies they bring so much character
i dont think it could work in 40k though. in 'rank' based wargames models are more like hit points than warriors, while in a game like 40k they can be 2 inches apart in any which way. I'm not really sure how that would work, but it's a cool idea.
These would look good as some light terrain pieces not just unit fillers. Id love to see you do other Bret. unit fillers, especially ones like the wagons that could be used as terrain.
I'm struggling a bit with unit fillers for Warriors of Chaos, and outside of just a big rock with a chaos symbol on it, I'm kinda drawing a blank. I would love to see your take on a unit filler for Warriors of Chaos :)
Depending on the god... -a stacked pile of skulls and corpse for khorne -a magical flaming brazier or summoning circle for tzeentch -a lavish feast table or mirror draped in flayed skin for Slaanesh -a plague cart brimming with infected "hosts" for nurgle
For horde armies as you take away casualties you can replace big blocks of empty space in the movement tray with a block of casualties. Say a plate of a bunch of dead men at arms to replace a large chunk that just got taken out of the unit
Idea for you… A Warhammer 40K short had the Black Templars kill Santa and his reindeer team. How about the Emperor finds Santa through the void and brings him back as a powerful marine with his wife as a Sister of Battle. Santa’s elves are transformed into loyal Eldar fighters, his sleigh is heavily armed and armored, and his 8 deer team are transformed into loyalist Skaven. The Emperor uses them as a holy force to bring his will to the universe. Just a thought… 😋
Dwarven unit filler please would be awesome. Also if you can give a list of alternate ideas as thought starters even if you only build one that would be cool to spark the imagination.
Cool video! for future "stone work" like on the obelisk I can recommend Geomfix (yeah I know, stupid name) from Sylcreate. It cures much harder than milliput and isn't crumbly, and no need to mix it with GS, although no reason you couldn't. Keep them coming Pete
Unit Fillers are a technology sadly lost to the Warhammer landscape (though it persisted in successors to WHFB, like Kings of War or 9th Age). An unfortunate development, as it's a fascinating tool for adding visual interest to one's army. Not to mention keeping costs down. I still think Unit Fillers could work in round-based games. Just so long as you glue multiple round bases together into a triangle or diamond shape. Retaining the "footprint" needed to work in a "skirmish" style wargame, while giving a larger "canvas" on which to build dioramas.
So, wait, were unit fillers just to allow you to field wider units without extra minis? Is there a paticularly useful point to that? I was a poor kid, I had blobs of 20 goblins and that was it
Unit fillers are a good way of having models in your army that could effectively count as any other model. So let's say one game you wanted to run a larger unit of peasant bowmen but then decided that next time you'd rather bolster a unit of men-at-arms. With a unit filler, you can use that instead of having to buy, build and paint up those extra models. It's effectively a way to make your unit sizes stretch a bit further without having to commit to building the models required for it.
Day 1 Request I would like to see you create a chuck wagon for the Empire (or halflings) as a unit filler or scenary piece. I think that would be cool!
Id love to see you convert some of the foot knights into a knight with squire who is holding coconuts monty python style! Mount it on a cavalry base, then use it as a knight.

Can you do a kit bash of jaghatai khan please
Maby you could do a filler for orks next

I hope they keep up this kind of positive vibe to their reboot of the old world, and don't fall back into the bad habits that saw Fantasy Battles get shafted in the first place.
Honestly, encouraging Kitbashing is a very good business move for them. Two models bashed together costs more than one model, after all!
I remember, back in the days (mid-2000s ?) an article in White Dwarf about unit filers and how they could bring a mini-scenery in each unit.
That was my exact thought, unit fillers lose GW money! You're squeezing out extra units from your kits for free! It's really refreshing to have a GW that says "yeah but they're a core part of the hobby so go wild with them".
Wonder how they’ll feel about it for tournament play.

Love these! Unit fillers are such an outlet of creativity and personalization, and these are SO thematic
One thing to note is that a unit filler is often larger than the bases of the mini's that surround them, but this doesn't need to be the case. You can make ones that are on the same size bases as well.
Just happy to see this was on the main warhammer page to shout down all the people who said unit fillers were not allowed.
Really cool to see these sort of builds in support of The Old World, would really like to see more of this sort of content Pete!
Awesome job, I’ve dug out some of my old High Elves, I’d love to see you do a unit filler for them
lol this is an old trick. love to see you bringing it back and sharing it.
is there a chance we could get one for the Dwarfen when ever they come out?
Pete you absolute legend! While I love the lore and aesthetic of Warhammer, it's your videos that actually got me back into building and painting models. Godspeed.
more old world please! 😊

When I saw your post on instagram I assumed these were buyable kits that you had painted. That’s the power of a high end kitbash 👌
Hey Pete, a lot of people have strong feelings about the old skeleton models for Tomb Kings. It would be really cool to see how you could sculpt bandages over them to turn them into Mummies, which would be a nice throwback. Looking forward to seeing some more Fantasy videos!

The Tomb Kings don't pop up in my TH-cam feed enough. Thanks for the Obelisk bit.
Yes for more old world content! This one was excellent and helpful.
The use of the spirit host is ingenious. That's a really inspired way to show the flowing magical power.
Would love to see you do unit fillers for the other armies for old world especially high elves
Very cool unit fillers, sad we didn’t get to see them in units at the end of the video, but understand.
Amazing work, unit fillers offer so much opportunity for great kitbashes and you have done ace with these.
Love it! Would love to see these for every faction and your take in different sub factions
