I actually met Arthur at the LA Airport in 2001. He was on his way for a concert in England! I shook hands with him and told him that I was a fan of his!

I think Arthur's peers were amazed with him and looked to Love's gigs at Whiskey A Go Go, to get the feeling of where music is going. Him and the group paved the way.

Great tune,,been listening to Love since 1965. They were one of several very good west coast bands (Spirit, Moby Grape,) which were truly great but were not destined to be superstars due to mismanagement, or some other issue. In Love 's case, Arthur Lee did not want to tour, and a couple of other things. There's a good yt vid on the making of 7&7 which explains a little of the backstory.

@@A_Pa-Plainjane Sorry for my late reply. You are right. I think to others bands like The Charlatans, The Beau Brummels or The Chocolate Watch Band who IMO were perhaps too" underground" to get a coherent & successfull recording career. Thx for the clue concerning Love & Arthur Lee. Plenty of great videos on YT : documentaries and live renditions. Unfortunately I never catch them live. Lucky U. All the best from Corsica

This came out in 1966-67. It brings back fond memories of growing up in my early teens in Southern California, walking the beach at Huntington, while hearing this song on all the transistor radios that were tuned into either KRLA or KHJ, and smelling the Coppertone lotion everywhere. Fond memories indeed.

Arthur LEE not only invented PUNK ROCK but also invented "BLACK AND WHITE AMERICA".
ARTHUR LEE you ' re my HERyO !
I think we didn' t realise what a great man he was !
he almost lost his life at the time
Because he had the courage at that time to found with the fantastic Bryan Mac Lean the first multiracial group in history.

They were better known in Europe partially because some of the basic form is based on Eurofolk even though it still uses rhythmic structures from RnB (especially Funk and Soul Music). Way classier approach than what The Beatles did honestly. Still could be considered Mod by some stretch also. Sort of a inversion of tropes.

I first heard this in 1987 on an LA oldies station. It was like WWHHAAAA???? Not Elvis, or the Supremes or most of what they usually played. "I gotta find who this is!!" I thought but they rarely ever said the name of the bands / artists! Luckily had my cassette recording when it came on! I learned the chords within a few days. It's mostly the 'Hey Joe' chords but like the Ventures meet Deep Purple meet a Wind Tunnel! I've been a LOVE fan ever since. I saw Arthur's 1991 version of the band play this 'live' without any warning & only 12 feet from the stage in a Santa Monica Club! POWWW!!!! [:-)]

Nicely done with the pics. One of my favorites on the radio in the 60s. Arthur was a friend I met in ‘73 when I was 17 at his home in North Hollywood. He kept in touch by phone through the years. We had an unusual connection of energies. Saw him play at a club on the coast with Melvan, Robert and Joe. I will never forget him. He didn’t forget me. Still love him with all my heart. I am thrilled so many love him too! He’s been gone a long time now. He’s not gone far. And Love Revisited plays on. Johnny, the one and only original with Arthur’s best Love band will blow your mind! Will see them in Brighton UK this summer. Mike Randle is a friend of mine. I connect to his energy too. He is crazy amazing you wouldn’t believe how genuine he is. There was no one like Arthur. And Diane was his true soul mate from the early 70s. Arthur was an original artist supreme. He has been with me when I needed him. You can feel him. Love never dies...✌️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

@@muffs55mercury61 Yes because this song is FAR from "heavy metal".
If you want to hear the very first commercially available heavy metal song then listen to Cream's cover of "SPOONFUL" on their 1966 album "Fresh Cream" (the album version, not the live version).
"7 and 7 Is" is more like surf rock (early surf rock - not that soft stuff that the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean vomited out).
