I’m Autistic and wasn’t diagnosed until I was 9. Most of my childhood and teen years were spent with caregivers and “professionals” who didn’t understand me in the slightest. VBS was an absolute nightmare sensory wise and I never had the words to say why. I had a meltdown almost every year

I’m also autistic and was undiagnosed until I was nineteen and also attended VBS for a couple of years. I never really had any sensory issues and it wasn’t too hard for me to memorize things for the performance. What I had issues with were kids making fun of me which happened all the time in Sunday school but very rarely at VBS because the boys that bullied me in Sunday school never attended VBS.

I saw one of the "you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me" Taylor Swift memes with a VBS poster from the early 2000s. Mood. I still remember some of the songs.

I went to VBS pretty consistently as a little girl and I enjoyed it, but mostly because I always ended up being extremely lonely by the middle of summer and was glad I could see friends and actually do things

VBS in itself, didn’t preclude families from swimming, camping, playing with friends, or going to Disneyland. We did all those things during summer and our adult children have fond memories of it all.
That said, did you listen to the theme and message of this VBS? It was teaching the grace of God and His love.
The fundamentalism taught in some churches is rigid and fear-based, suffocating the love and grace of God. It’s out of balance; man-made rules.
I understand the anger, hurt, and desire to escape such a legalistic system. Black and white thinking is a cognitive distortion on both sides of the coin and doesn’t promote understanding or allow room for growth.

I was never allowed the camp experience but if I had, it would have been this. The churches did do little VBS themed things...think along the lines of a long, indoors sunday school lesson.

I remember helping out at a VBS where the kids were taken into a dark room to be given a gospel presentations. The guy dumped nails into a can to represent sins and it was so loud that the kids begged him to stop because it hurt their ears. The guy said it was supposed to make them uncomfortable...another girl was taught not to trust her heart "because it has sin in it" and when she said that all the adults cheered.

Ya gotta admit, VBS is some top-tier genius marketing.
As Elly mentioned there’s the free childcare for a week aspect which ESPECIALLY with today’s childcare costs is worth its weight in gold.
Then, there’s what we just watched. To **SO** many people - just the everyday, garden-variety people, who don’t think too much about what this kinda thing ACTUALLY does.- this is peak adorable. Memories they can cherish & rewatch for a lifetime. Surely there’s nothing dastardly in that, right??
And that’s what makes it genius.
Those of us only TOO familiar with precisely how dastardly this has, with little to no “pressure”/effort being exerted by the kind, welcoming, SMILEY, HAPPY church-goers, the potential to be, who try & raise the alarm, send out the warning…WE’RE the ones who end up being perceived as the unbalanced radicals trying to “push an agenda”. 🙄
    Pure unadulterated EVIL genius.
All that said…AWWWWW Elly!! 😍You were such a stinkin’ adorable lil tyke it’s damn ridiculous. Your parents really missed the mark, trying to “be somebody” in the “who can out-do whom in abusively controlling the lives of their family!!” game, they could made BANK putting that face in cereal commercials lol. 😁😘

  • @causticgit
    @causticgit 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

This is such a sensory nightmare and your little face goes between moments of joy and moments of "Oh noes, get me out of here!!" Fundie indoctrination aside, why do we keep making kids put on these shows?! I know I loved them when I was a kid (I was a ham and my teachers were good), but SO MANY of the kids on that stage don't want to be there.
Also, fistbump from another member of the Straight Bangs 90s Kids Club 😂 Glad I wasn't the only one, those barrette bows bring back memories!

I went to a Lutheran church for a bit as a kid and they did the V.B.S. Program only it was a bit more like Sunday school over five days and half of the time was spent hanging out with the other kids in different grades and singing songs and putting on a performance at the end of the week for the parents. There was always a theme and that related to the performance and what would be taught to us from the Bible.

  • @sandreaandrea
    @sandreaandrea 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

I always dreaded VBS because of how they'd put everyone in a room at the end of the day and make us all close our eyes, and then they'd ask if anyone didn't know Jesus and would like to, to raise their hands, the VBS leaders would take note of those kids, and then they'd pray the sinner's prayer with all of us and have us repeat it. It made me constantly scared that I wasn't saved, and so I'd pray it over and over again.

First of all thank you so much for sharing this and cultivating such an amazing community. Your such an amazing human being and the video is amazing as always!
It brought up memories of when I went to VBS. When I was still catholic I would go to VBS every summer. It was definitely one of the more fun actives my church offered for kids and one of my favorites as well. I don't know if this was a common occurrence but "older" kids would be in charge of younger kids. When I was 11 I was taking care of a 3 and 5 year old. I remember asking for help, they needed to use the restroom and at the time I didn't feel comfortable helping them as they couldn't go alone. Eventually the 5 year old took the 3 year old and went in together but the 3 year old came out crying. I felt so guilty, like if I had done something more the 3 year old would be ok. I felt lost. I felt this way with everything, the church always puts so much on kids, some of which I'm still working through today. I know logical the adults should have taken responsibility, that an adult should have helped when I asked. But the church teaches your not good enough and never will be so I carried that guilt. I hope those girls are thriving today.

Thank you for sharing this with us! It goes without saying you were adorable then and beautiful now! Our 2 children went to VBS and this brings back memories! Two best moments; hiccups and kids running out!!!😳🤣💟
I’m so sorry you were raised with rigidity and hyper-control. I’m grateful your mom is owning up to it now and is exploring the exploitive control your dad had over her and your family. People seek control when they’ve come out of chaos. Sometimes they’re just sick. I hope you and your mom continue to grow into greater emotional health. 💟

Late to the party. Thanks for the upload. Happy pride month. I remember my first experiences with VBS were pretty positive. It may have depended upon the church but likely was also before the gimmicky and curriculum driven VBS. We had different grades/ages separated and it was more like a little day camp. Sure we sang the goofy songs with gusto but there were no services or alter calls. We played outdoor games, took nature walks and made neutral crafts. There were cookies and lemonade. I took some reassurance in the structured activities with school just let out. It was surely helpful to parents though many volunteered. I wish churches would consider spending money on Summer programs that would really benefit children and communities instead of these over the top, indoctrinating extravaganzas.

I grew up in a non evangelical denomination of Protestantism and VBS is the first kids church activity that you've talked about that we also had. It was only in the morning for a week (it ended before lunch if I remember correctly). I'm assuming the programming was like a curriculum the church could buy because I remember the lessons being pretty similar to our Sunday school lessons. I also don't think it was advertised outside the church, it was really just the kids whose families went to the church that came. Some years we combined our VBS with a couple nearby churches but I'm pretty sure those were both also mainline protestant denominations. The songs we learned were mostly just cute rhyming retellings of Bible stories and we never did a whole performance at the end. Interesting to see the similarities and differences.

Vacation Bible Schools (multiple at different churches every year) and Awana were my main forms of church participation throughout my youth. My parents worked on the weekends so I had no way to get to Sunday services, but my little indoctrinated self BEGGED to go to every VBS I could possibly go to even when I knew no one at the churches. Partially I think it was to "make up" for not going to Sunday services, because in my kid brain I had to be in a church regularly in order to not go to Hell. Ngl I ate up every second of every single VBS I attended, and no matter how hard I try I will never forget the lyrics to years of kids songs I learned in the themed programs (and ofc the Awana theme song) 😅
As funny as I can find different aspects of my experiences now, Awana and Vacation Bible Schools were incredibly troubling to my little mind and its taken the better part of 20 years to figure out how it impacted me

Omg I was just thinking about VBS recently! We went every summer as kids despite being raised in a non-religious household-like you stated, we had working parents and VBS was free childcare during the summer when school was out. I have fond memories especially of the highly-themed VBSes with almost set pieces??? like a castle we had group inside of or activities I really liked like making our own bricks during part of a lesson on ancient Egypt. Thank you for sharing your home videos and discussing VBS. It’s fascinating stuff!

I went to one when I was a kid. It was free and was run by a man who had become a Pastor, but didn't have a Church. The Farmers would bring animals, the retired ladies would always make the snacks and lunches. I remember thinking it was fun at the time. Most of the kids came from a few local Churches that where ether Presbyterian or United Church (Of Canada), though it was not actually affiliated with ether denomination.
Looking at it in hindsight, it was actually much more Evangelical or Fundamentalist then what the local Churches actual believe.

its funny how I have mixed feelings watching this. on one hand it seems relatively benign, getting kids to sing cute songs, perform, and cooperate together in a creative theatrical project. maybe because its all so familiar, it even feels a bit nostalgic. that said, did any kid ever WANT to go to church on Sunday? I certainly never WANTED to 'go to the house of the lord' - it was just what we did, and of course being raised in it, I accepted it, and certainly enjoyed the singing, crafts and performing as I got older.
but maybe it's the putting heavily laden scripted words into children's mouths that is so disturbing and problematic. I remember performing as a group a song ('kids of the kingdom') where each kid had a solo where we sang the line: "my name is ___; I love the lord". later on, my great anguish in xty was NOT feeling love for 'the lord', yet always singing songs declaring I did.
these songs/skits get kids to practice inauthenticity, which is what evangelicals become known for, because we are told what we should be saying/ feeling/ expressing from the earliest years (and of course anger and grumpiness and skepticism and cynicism aren't allowed). yes- dissonance between our inner experiences and outer 'performance' is what is being laid down from the very beginning, which in years to come can create much pain and suffering from being disconnected from our true selves! at 51, I'm still finding my way back to me!

I grew up in a mainstream Presbyterian (PC USA) church, and I'm sure I went to these as a kid, although I barely remember it. I must have enjoyed them, though, since I helped run them when I was in high school.
I (a teenage girl) helped out in the woodshop. Although I'm sure I knew that was unusual, I don't remember anyone ever giving me grief about it, so that probably suggests how progressive of a congregation it was.
