The NES was clearly better in library and sound. But the visuals on the Master System were superior and had some excellent gems like: - R-Type - Wonderboy 3 - Sonic the Hedgehog 1-2 (different than the megadrive, but still good) - Mickey games were really good - New Zealand Story - Shinobi - Power Strike I+II - Bubble Bobble - Prince of Persia - Golden Axe Warrior - Phantasy Star There were some impressive ports from megadrive to Master System, but still it would remind you more on how awesome they were on the Megadrive(Sonic games are not ports)
Zillion 2 and Double Dragon with actual Co Op , living in America owning a Master System was only me and 1 other kid in school had 1 , everyone else had the Nintendo.
Add to that: - Master of Darkness (SMS answer to Castlevania) - Ninja Gaiden - Alien 3 The Master system can be modified to region swap (50/60Hz), RGB video output and controller pause button mod
Sonic 3(it has a different name, but it's just the Master System's Sonic 3, there's also a fourth one I've never played) is also a good game. Kinda "more of the same" of Sonic 2, but with bigger levels etc.
At the "Enjoy" screen without a rom inserted press buttons 1,2 and up to access the secret game within. Transbot game also has a secret level select if you hold 1,2 during the boot process.
I had the choice between the NES and Master system, I picked the Master system as it had some excellent arcade ports and at the time arcades ruled ! I hadn’t heard of any of the games on the NES so it was an easy choice.
A fantastic console that should be in every retro collectors home. Most common is Master System 2 which is cheaper, smaller, without card reader (no need since all games are made also on normal carts) and RF only (though can be modded easily to rca).
The mighty master system was the console of my childhood. Such a good system with a really happy sound chip that is instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up with this system. In my opinion it is a superior system over the nes. Use one of your official genesis/mega drive pads if you'd prefer. That flash cartridge is a good purchase ( I have one too) save function works well on games that allow it & you'll even find early SG1000 games on there.
Never owned any Nintendo system. Went straight to Sega. Master System was my first system with 85 games. Had the built in snail game. Also the light gun, control stick and rapid fire unit. Love all of it.
I remember my master system controller has a screw thread in the middle of the d-pad which was covered, inside the box were 2 little knobs that screwed in making then thumbsticks and that's how I used them. Never seen any of these pads in any reviews
I believe the early models had the threaded hole with option for the tiny joystick (thumb stick) or a little plastic plug to cover the hole. The wire also exited from the side on one model and put the center of the top on the other model. I loved my SMS and I still have it and my brother’s SMS too. SEGA made their own versions of popular games: Action Fighter combined Hang-On, Spy Hunter and Xevious into one cool game. They also had the best home version of Choplifter that was nearly as good as the arcade game. Fantasy Zone was whacky but amazing and frustrating. Out Run was well done. A third party game called RC Grand Prix by Absolute Entertainment is a more serious version of RC Pro-Am on the NES.
Got one new for Christmas 1987. I picked this over the NES. It came with two controllers, light gun and Hang On/Safari Hunt. I also got two games with it the night I bought it. Gangster Town and Pro Wrestling. I probably ended up with about 50 games for that system. My favorite being Reggie Jackson Baseball. I always thought the colors, graphics, sounds and games looked better on the SMS than the NES.
I still got my master system ii from when i was a child ,i found a controller with Taz and california games the other day whilst going through some boxes, loved the console ,alex kidd and mickey mouse castle of illusion my favourite games
A few years back I picked up a Mega Everdrive for my Genesis. I was happy to find out it also plays Master System roms. The Master System had some great games I am currently playing Golden Axe Warrior which is like Legend of Zelda on NES. I look forward to seeing more videos as you discover more gems.
Here in the UK, we never really had a craze for the NES. The Master System was more popular, but its time of peak popularity was actually during the 16-bit era. Nintendo just let the NES slowly die off, in favour of the SNES. But Sega cleverly positioned the Master System II as a prominent entry-level Sega console for those who found the Mega Drive (Genesis) to be out of their price range. Master System was still popular into the mid 90's. It's a great console, very underrated.
Plus you could buy a converter to take your Master System Carts to the Mega Drive, when I got mine it was the height of the Amiga but carts were cheap then, I got job lots at wholesale prices
Many happy memories and many hours spent playing Golden Axe, Submarine attack (recommended) Alex Kidd, Wonderboy games, and the amazing R Rype and Ghouls n Ghosts versions, oh how I wish I could go back, I was about 12 when I got a Master System, upgraded from a ZX Spectrum 128k thought it was the best thing ever 👌

Nostalgia is deeply connected with personal past experiences. Few years ago, I acquired Mega Drive (model II - roman numeral), Why? because I had MD 2 (Arabic numeral for the Asian market) when I was kid. PS one (slim)? I had it as a teen. Saturn or Dreamcast? No. Saturn was THE Unobtainium outside of Japan or US. Nobody ever saw it's PAL release. Dreamcast was available for 1 (one) year ONLY before Sega committed Seppuku (mismanagement and power struggle within the company) on the console market. There's a guy on ebay, selling 3d printed D-pad replacements for the Master System. Grab a couple of the Sega Saturn style D-pads. You won't regret it. Much better precision and feels more natural than the stock D-pad.
As a 90s kid when ever i think of Belgium i always think of one of my favorite martial arts action stars Jean Claude Van Damme the muscles from Brussels 😎🥋💪🔥🇧🇪

The horizontal bars on top and bottom are because the game is made for NTSC, which has less horizontal lines on the same space and instead of adapting for PAL, the devs just compress it. Just like games made in NTSC regions running slower on PAL systems
Back in 1988, I asked for a Master System for Christmas, not thinking for a second I would actually get one, and then I did! I flipped out. I was the original N64 kid. This is where my love of Sega came from. I had a bunch of games and loved this system. R-Type, Rampage, Double Dragon, After Burner, Thunder Blade, etc., all with that unique Sega sound and feel.
Australia was very different to the US in that it was about a 50/50 split between Sega Master System and NES. the master system had incredible allure as a kid because of the arcade ports. are they good now? not so much, but man they were epic before the genesis came out :)
Was only talking about retro gaming with a friend who use to have a Master System and was thinking of getting one again. Also brought your channel up in the talk as well. Funny you have this video with the Master System haha
The Master System was my first console. In my neighborhood it was more like a 70/30 or 60/40 split. I had no idea it was doing so poorly since so many of my friends had them.
Wicked, Hang On might still work! You need to really clean the contacts inside the console as well as on the card. Even the most troublesome games begin working again after heavy maintenance!
I had the master system back in the day. I'm from the States so i only knew one other person who had one. i have a lot of nostalgia for the system. Although i must admit some of the games have not aged well like the port of Altered Beast but i played it to death in 1989!
That's in really great condition! Looks almost new. I loved my Master System at the time it was out. Especially the original Phantasy Star, which no other JRPG came close to in terms of visuals, gameplay and music, including ones on the NES. Way ahead of its time. Also Black Belt, Kung-Fu Kid, Zillion, Rocky, and so much more.
Hi Mr Wicked , brilliant video as always , you can use the mega drive - genesis controller / joypads on the master system console , if your struggling with the stock ones , regards , The GAMES MASTER ! 😊
I had that joystick. It was awful. My favorite games were R-type, Out Run, and Space Harrier. Safari Hunt was better than Duck Hunt on NES, but neither system had enough light gun games.
I was more of a NES guy but eventually I bought a Master System. I managed to get quite a collection of games. It had some very good games and ports. Here in USA the NES reigned supreme but in some South American countries the Master System was king. For example in Brazil 🇧🇷 Sega kicked Nintendo's butt. And I know in some European countries Sega beat Nintendo like I think in Spain. Anyway the Master System was very good. Good review and cool video Wicked!👉🏼🙂👈
Nice one. The MS was a great little machine! You could even use their joypads on Atari and Amiga too ha ha (MD ones too). Your game selection is unfortunate, there are some amazing titles on this system to be played. ( ^_^)
Yours does have a built in game. Turn your console on and when you get the warning screen press up and buttons 1 &2. This was a hidden game only accessible on the first version of the SMS. I’ve always found this version to be highly sought after since the built in game “Snail Maze” was never available anywhere else. Though it’s not much of a game, but it is very nostalgic for those who grew up the the SMS
Hey man if I remember rightly ( was 35 years ago when I had mine ) you press and hold both buttons on control and up on pad when powering up and keep held untill you get a secret snail maze game ? Let me know if it still works !?
No, the Master System really seemed largely unknown at the time if you were there. The NES just dominated. I might get a MS some day, but there's nothing any of my favorite companies made that stand out on it.
I have a PAL console (Australian), I cut a trace on the board and it now displays full screen, full speed (60hz NTSC) great mod, you just need an RGB Scart lead.
Master System expert here ! Master system was a great system,in many ways superior to the crappy famicom. Not all master systems have built in games, yours is an example. Master system isnt region free as some suposed experts say,as so,your hang on is ok,it doesnt work because its an american release, and will display that message in pal consoles,it will work on the japanese ntsc master system. Other thing, please dont Exchange controls with the unit on,it can damage ic controller ! For last, better pal master systems are the french ones, both have rgb out of the box,and overall best master system is japanese one,fm sound, rapid fire,3d glasses imput, all built in the console, and its region free !
The NES was clearly better in library and sound. But the visuals on the Master System were superior and had some excellent gems like:

- Bubble Bobble
- Prince of Persia
- Golden Axe Warrior
- Phantasy Star
There were some impressive ports from megadrive to Master System, but still it would remind you more on how awesome they were on the Megadrive(Sonic games are not ports)
Adding a few more games:
- California Games
- Double Dragon
- Golvellius (Zelda like RPG)
- Kung Fu Kid
Zillion 2 and Double Dragon with actual Co Op , living in America owning a Master System was only me and 1 other kid in school had 1 , everyone else had the Nintendo.

- Ninja Gaiden
- Alien 3
The Master system can be modified to region swap (50/60Hz), RGB video output and controller pause button mod

I had the master system back in the day. I'm from the States so i only knew one other person who had one. i have a lot of nostalgia for the system. Although i must admit some of the games have not aged well like the port of Altered Beast but i played it to death in 1989!
sega had 2 free games built into the console needed to input button combo at title screen
Shame the Hang-On Card is faulty, but least you can get it other Wicked ways 😅
That's in really great condition! Looks almost new. I loved my Master System at the time it was out. Especially the original Phantasy Star, which no other JRPG came close to in terms of visuals, gameplay and music, including ones on the NES. Way ahead of its time. Also Black Belt, Kung-Fu Kid, Zillion, Rocky, and so much more.
Hi Mr Wicked , brilliant video as always , you can use the mega drive - genesis controller / joypads on the master system console , if your struggling with the stock ones , regards , The GAMES MASTER ! 😊
I miss my Sega
👍👍™️
My 2nd game system
I had that joystick. It was awful. My favorite games were R-type, Out Run, and Space Harrier. Safari Hunt was better than Duck Hunt on NES, but neither system had enough light gun games.
I’ve been blessed to see and have all from 1980-Now with gaming Master Systems and NES were great for those times/generation 8-bit wicked time
I was more of a NES guy but eventually I bought a Master System.
I have one in the box.
Lord of the Sword was great back in the day.
Oh boy! I missed out on this as well 😢 hope to own one someday.
There is a hidden game on the Master System if I remember.
I need to pick one up, been using the cart adapter on the Retron 5 to play my SMS library. I also love the snail game built into the master system.
Fantastic vintage console! I hope SEGA makes a retro mini!
Its a very good hardware, has the better version of wonder boy/adventure island , almost an 1-1 conversion
I have a PAL console (Australian), I cut a trace on the board and it now displays full screen, full speed (60hz NTSC) great mod, you just need an RGB Scart lead.
Transbot in 2024 - wait, my name means what now?
got mine a few years ago, love it
Master System expert here !
