    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Her book on directing actors was a treasure trove for me. I hope to see more interviews with Judith!

I think a lot of directors are just afraid of actors because they are afraid of emotions. Like she said, in life we do everything we can to repress or run away from our emotions. Working with actors causes directors to be forced to remove themselves from the comfort zone of their technical brain and open themselves up to someone whose entire job is to express emotion at them.
I think the first thing for directors to do is to stop seeing actors as “actors” but just seeing them as people who are there to do a job to serve the story just like they are and then they can collaborate with them without fear.

What was the biggest misconception you had about actors that was dispelled once you worked on set?

I would love to believe Judith's methods are being utilized on all sets.

Read both her books - directing actors and intuition. Very informative and practical. Directing is hard. Theres no easy way or shortcuts.
Another great guest speaker. Keep up the good work.

    Great upload! ❤️
I totally learned something from this.
I will now go and quietly chat to my actors. Wow I didn't think of that, the "people are now watching" aspect 😬.
    Thanks guys 🙏

Isn't this all rehearsal stuff where you figure out what works or not?

    • @NicoleSeelig
      @NicoleSeelig 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

In an ideal scenario, yes, for most of that. But, for lower budget projects, rehearsal time is often not quite as available, due to people either having other projects as well, or a day job etc.

being judged on camera is tough, not all actors can turn on like a switch and thats ok, bad behavior that is detrimental to production needs a calm and firm comsequence, even the best actors cant do everything you want, a good director is like a good parent where the cast and crew can feel safe and grow professionally... and experienced actors know that their favorite moments can be edited out in the cutting room.
actors show up for a job. a director can help create the environment for them do that job.

Why do some directors demand large numbers of takes even when the changes in posture or position seem very minor? I realize some directors demanded very few takes so there seems to be something more than someone making a mistake.

I know David Fincher says he like to exhaust his actors so they essentially 'stop acting'.
Whether this is true or just directorial indulgence I don't know. But I remember hearing that Jake Gyllenhal had a mental breakdown on ZODIAC because of Fincher's methods.

Probability. The more takes you have, the higher the chance one of them is excellent.

Some actors do get emotional! Bottom-line actors are human, not robots.

Hitchcock is right: all actors should BE treated like cattle.
