I had a little electric piano that was gifted to me by my parents for me to learn on... unfortunately I never did achieve to a great magnitude on that piano. But this song - it was prerecorded on my piano and I would listen to it practically every day. This is by far my favorite song. I feel nostalgia, melancholy, and freedom all at the same time. I even found the sheet music and brought it to my piano teacher begging her to let me learn the piece. She refused, knowing I was not advanced enough to learn yet. Never did I quite reach that point. But here I am, years and years later and I have found the exact recording that was on my piano. I know for a fact this is the version I listened to throughout my early adolescent years. And then the emotions wash over me once again.
Have you ever thought of learning it anyway? It's quite achievable with training and hardwork for a few months. It may seem really hard at the begining, but once memorised, it gets easier to train.
it doesnt matter if he plays it faster or slower.. its the feeling that grabs the attention of the audience... if he puts emotion into the song, even though it may say "play as written", it doesnt matter if its too fast or slow, it will still sound beautiful.. :)
Debussy himself didn't play his pieces as he wrote them. He always added his own rubato, accelerando, tempo change etc. That just proves the theory that Debussy shouldn't be played "as written".
@@pavaomrazek I don't even recall making this comment from 14 years ago, so thanks for your reply! As I have grown and my piano studies have greatened I want to apologize for calling it a 'song' haha. Anyway, yes I would agree with you!
My brother loved this song. He never played any instruments but for his wedding he taught himself to play this song for his new wife. It was really cool.
Il miglior interprete in assoluto dell'impressionismo pianistico francese.Tocco, fraseggio, agogica tutto tecnicamente perfetto ma nello stesso tempo assolutamente musicale.GRANDE MAESTRO ABM🙏
From France came great men and women, France is a great country. Greetings from Rome Italy and Thanks for Sharing this interpretation of a great men from my own country. My father used to tell me Go to France and stay there. And while saying that used to listen to Benedetti Michelangeli.
I stopped on youtube to have a listen to 'la fille aux cheveux' because I was thinking about it ... and found this entry. Just wonderful. I've watched it and listened to it the first few times utterly memorized. I've addictedly replayed it many times now. I've never heard of Mr. Michelangeli but I felt very honored to watch Mr. Michelangeli this evening. Thank you, sir! And thank you to the person that posted this.
The piece is dedicated to (auburn-haired) singer Marie Blanche Vasnier for whom the much younger Debussy wished to create songs inspired by her voice. Its text is the poem La fille aux cheveux de lin No. 4 of the Chansons écossaises (Scottish songs) from Charles Leconte de Lisle's Poemes antiques (Ancient poems), published by Alphonse Lemerre in Paris, 1874.
A stunningly beautiful piece so sensitively played by this great virtuoso. Together with Jascha Heifetz's version on the violin, the two performances indeed soothe the soul. Many thanks for posting. Best wishes.
Unexpectedly lyricaly subtle interpretation from Michelangeli, whom I was seeing as mainly a technical virtuoso. Oh he is so emotionally involved (however well contained)... but the feeling and the love for the song just burst through.
I'm not much of a piano guy (bass clarinet's my shit). But this is the only piano song I keep coming back too. I never Not cry whenever I hear this piece and for the life of me I can't explain why.
It has 6 flats. It's in the key of Gb. That has nothing to do with it sounding oriental. That's because of the use of the pentatonic scale. It's beautiful..
This video follows Debussy in how he wanted to present these pieces, which is a great idea. In the printed score Debussy insisted that the title of the piece must be put at the end of the piece, not in the beginning as usual. The title at the beginning here is that of the previous prelude.
Autumn is coming in Tokyo . I feel a little pensive and pathos while listening to his exquisite performance . Like everyman Debussy stood in awe of this women's beauty @ 0:20, imagined a life with her, realized he probably had no chance around 2:08, and at 2:30 thought " i will always admire her beauty....even if from afar."
Glorious. And by the way, I wish people would stop referring to this as a "song". A song involves the human voice. This is a piano piece. People have been so brought up on pop music.
Beautiful piece of music. There's aversion of this piece played on the harp too - heart-meltingly beautiful to listen to. A piece of music only the French could write :-)
I really respect Michelangeli and his thought-provoking interpretations but my favorite Debussy interpreter is Alain Planes, I heard no other pianist that feel Debussy naturally like Alain Planes. I admire his playing. On the other hand, I’d like to hear your thoughts on why Michelangeli is considered as one of the best pianists, I am a beginner piano learner and want to understand even simple nuances between different pianists. Thanks!
A perfect interpretation of "as slow as possible!" aka, Bartok's "Rubato parlando" as an antipode of folk music with "Allegro Giocoso. " Follow into Ciccolini's version of Debussy's La plus que lente (as slow as possible). The follow this feeling for these works into André Laplante's work in Ravel, especially his Miroirs III. Une Barque sur L'Ocean.
This play is excellent, marvellous ,splendid and splendid play. This song is great , and my favorite song.:what nationality are you who are listening to this song?

MICHELANGELI : UN GENIO CHE INTERPRETA UN GENIO !!
Arturo est un de mes pianistes préférés: un vrai génie, c'est vrai. Et il a su capter l'âme de Debussy. Un prince de la musique.

Thank you for this lovely story!
Except it is not a "song"😉
It's never too late to learn.
Magnifique interprétation! La rêverie la nostalgie les regrets.... Tout est tellement bien exprimé avec un toucher unique!
His grasp of Debussy is unparalleled, in my opinion.
I like that he plays the piano as much with his face as he does with his hands! This one is on my favorites list!
This is an absolutely beautiful peice and he plays it with such greatness... Truly a masterpeice.
One emotional peak of music history 1:32 Debussy was unique.
Absolutely agree. 2.03 too, in my heart 😍 Genius
This almost made a grown man cry... bravo sir.
This song can bring a grown man to tears.
This piece is poetic. Beyond expression.
ah Debussy... what a man. His music is just so... organic. It grows like a tree, from small twigs to a fully blossomed beautiful, tall proud tree.
Michelangeli leaves the piece breath, so great, probably one of the top 3 performances of the piece.

très belle fluidité! on rêve de cette fille!
Easily one of the most calming songs ever, along with most of Debussy's other pieces.

Yup! I just love French music especially from Ravel and Debussy!

Just perfect - what timing and how he manages to avoid this wonderful melody from getting too smeary and sentimental. A master at work
