You will see tourist traps even in highly developed countries like Japan, France and USA.

Mate, try Sri Lankan koththu. Chicken/ Cheese. If u want to try street foods, go to Aluthkade ( Colombo) Sandy beaches - Hikkaduwa, Pasikuda, Mirissa, Pigeon island, Trincomale beach and ect. See the sun set and sun raise in a beach. Go for a Safari in Yala if u interested

As a sri lankan i can''t guarantee a 100% safety or scam free environment. But 99% our people are so nice and very hospitable. Simply i will tell you u wont stay hungry in sri lanka. If u feel hungry in a village , just go to a local house and just ask for a glass of water. They will invite you for a meal my dear. Our people is very high in hospitality. Specially for a non citizen they will give a full care. Cz sri lankans love to share there home made food with foreigners. Sri lankan will do any help without expecting a pay back. We love to say "just visit us again and that will the big payment you do". The only thing is most of our people don''t speak english much. Still they can understand what is ur need. Visit locals just to experience .
FYI, I think they switched cars because Sri Lanka still has a fuel shortage. How much one can get at the gas station is limited to the gas card limit they have per license plate/VIN. The first driver may have the fuel now but probably has to last for the entire month as opposed to the next driver has more fuel to burn or has a more room in his gas card. I think there is still a shortage of gas (petrol/desal and LPG) in the country. I am just speculating but that could be the reason.
