Minimalism | the Benefits of Living With Less

  • Why less is more: in this video, I want to talk about stuff, minimalism, and space. Space when it comes to time, money, mind, and our homes. We live in a consumerist society and are encouraged to buy solutions, but oftentimes more consumption doesn't equal more happiness. After being a minimalist for over six years I want to share my thoughts on less is more and how to incorporate this philosophy into your life.

my hardest challenge when it comes to living the less-is-more minimalist lifestyle i want to live is the scarcity mindset that i've developed from coming from a family who struggled with money and struggling with money in my adult life. it's a paradox because the more minimalist i become, and the less unnecessary things i learn my way out of thinking i need, the better my finances will be. but then it's hard to get rid of things because i think i might need them eventually, and will i have enough money to comfortable buy them again if that's the case? i save so many things, especially little things, because i imagine they will help in a pinch later and save me money from not having to repurchase it, while in the meantime, it takes up space that i want back and might be saved for nothing if the need never arises again.

I totally agree on the finding balance thing. I think extreme minimalism is a useful practice to show yourself how little you really need, but I don't personally find it sustainable long term for everyday life. Personally, I aim for 5 comfy casual outfits and 5 dressier going out outfits for each season but I do two seasons: spring/Summer and fall/Winter. I've found this to be a good number so far to get me through until the next laundry day and I only do a load every week or so. Meanwhile when I was backpacking and living in a van I only had 2-3 outfits but mostly just wore one every day and had the other two as backups for laundry day or working

My hardest challenge is not having the temptation to buy more stuff that I really want, that’s been sitting in my wish list for a while. Even though I have the money for it. I overthink a lot because I want to buy sustainable. And it takes a lot of my time, in thinking about it and spending time looking at it.

Hallo Lia, liebe deine Videos.

Always love your videos, have been following since the beginning! I totally resonate with the concept of “functional minimalism” - in that minimalism as a practice, like any, becomes more subtle the farther you continue with it. Starting with physical consumption, mastering that, and then moving on to the mental/emotional consumption and decluttering our inner home. This is all what helps us become free. Thanks for continuing to share your life with us! Best wishes and can’t wait till your next video.

A well-constructed, nuanced argument. I definitely empathize with mental clutter that exacerbates anxiety and distracts from creativity. One practical issue with respect to freeing up space is furniture. We have virtually no (easy, inexpensive) mechanisms for letting go of it. The cost is recurrent, should you need to move or remove it; and the few charities that actually accept furniture make you jump through hoops. Good luck unloading a couch with an outmoded upholstery pattern. (Please excuse the rant.)

Hi Lia, have you ever considered converting some of your videos that don't require visuals to podcasts as well? Visual minimalism! I realize that I have trouble reducing my screen time. Despite decluttering for the past two years, I think I only just realized that the biggest source of "clutter" in my life is way too much time in front of my screen and taking in too much visual stimulus. One of the ways I'm trying to reduce screen time is by listening to podcasts/audiobooks. Just a thought, really enjoyed your video!

For me the hardest is not to buy when I'm feeling overstimulated...stressed, when I cannot control situations and I don't really feel myself. It couldn't resist the temptations the last two weeks...

I have too many plants. It is very hard for me to downsize the number, when I love them so much, all of them are beautiful or have the potential in the future to be. How can I let go of the need to compensate (with plants) some lack somewhere I obviously have...?

I've gotten very good about decluttering. My problem is accumulating items right after. It's a vicious cycle that I can't seem to break!

Look at it like dieting, you would remove certain foods from your home sooooo, recycle mail order catalogs right away, don't even look at them. Take shopping apps off your phone, drive/walk past the garage sale, don't stop, go grocery shopping for just food.
Think of ways you can " fill up " with experiences instead of objects/items.
      Volunteer
      Buy yourself some flowers
      Treat yourself to a movie
      Help an elderly neighbor
      Visit a neighbor/elderly person
      Take someone to lunch
Offer to clean a friend's house
      Take a hike
      Plan a vacation
Try to go for experiences that make you feel good vs buying an item.
Just suggestions, take em or leave em.
I struggle with elimination of sentimental stuff

Listening to you, I think I do exactly the opposite. You reduced stuff (clothing for instance) as to minimize choice and gain time/resources to THINK and CREATE and DECIDE what's important in life. I sometimes fill my life with work and tasks to maintain my stuff, and I think it's because I am afraid to ask myself those big questions. Living as a reaction to past choices feels easier. But I don't think it can make happier. A lot to reflect upon, thank you !
