When I came to USA from South Africa, I missed my Islam. I missed hearing the Adhan, I missed seeing people with Muslim identity. I was empty and cried from the loss I felt here in America of my deen and I wanted to go back home. May Allah keep South African Muslims strong and also strengthen American Muslims and others around the world. Ameen.

For those who are wondering, CARLOS MENEM was the president of Argentina from 1989 to 1999. He was raised as a Muslim in 1930s and later converted to Catholicism. He died in 2021 and was buried at the San Justo Islamic cemetery after an Islamic ritual (Janaza).

Algamdulillah I am so honored to listen to Dr Yasir Qadhi, as a born South African. Yes he is right at the age 5yrs my parents sent me to madrassa, no creche or pre school. Madrassa, 2 yrs later secular school. I still carried on going to madrassa till the age of 13yrs. We had no history teachers or Arabic teachers in the mid 60's. So we studied Islam by reading Islamic books.Shukran Sheikh Yasir Qadhi for praising our country South Africa. We love you and may Alllah swt grant you many more years ahead so our grandchildren can learn from you. Jazakallah hu khair.

    Yes Alhumdulillah
The madrassah is the main centre to preserve Islaam.
And we notice now that those that choose not to send their children to a maktab or proper Islamic school are slowly drifting of from Islaam
As they prefer only secular education.
    Allah have mercy on us.
Our alims and alimas are working extremely hard on this to preserve our deen in South Africa

In madrasa people learn bedat and shirk and madrasa will never reserve islam allah will reserve islam madrasa is a foul place it is not islam. People become arrogant when they study there and they learn many bedats which is not related to islam now you dont madrasa you can learn islam through internet and books. And many rapes and bad things happen in madrasa better to learn islam through books or internet.

Totally true about South Africa. It is the Maktab system, where every Muslim child goes to the Maktab after school. This connects with the Madrassa system to which some of them go. But everyone goes to the Maktab. So everyone is educated in the basics of Islam and some go on to study more. This is the secret. A Maktab in every Masjid to which every student comes everyday after regular school of 2-3 hours. I have a lot of lovely history with South African Madaaris and the Jamiat ul Ulama, South Africa and so I speak from firsthand knowledge.

Assalaam dear Sheikh, as an Islamic history teacher and a South African... I really appreciated your talk and encouragement for us as an ummah to change our mindset about education in Islam. I teach at a school in Cape Town where we have a holistic approach to education... i.e we see the Divine in all learning areas, be it Science, Geography, Math, etc and all the Islamic subjects of course. The history of madrassahs and formalised teaching started amongst the Cape Malay Muslims who arrived in South Africa in the mid 17C as political exiles and slaves. Amongst these prisoners, were pious and prominent figureheads who had a great influence on Islam in South Africa.
However, Ottoman Sultan also sent teachers to the Cape in 19C as Islam was being lost amongst the Muslims due to religious practices being outlawed by the European colonialist powers at the Cape.
So the tradition of formalised teaching and home schools were established long before Muslims arrived as indentured workers from the Indian sub continent in the late 19C and early 20C.
Alhamdulillah South Africa is truly blessed to have excellent institutions of Islamic learning and it is my belief that it is of the blessings of the 1st Muslim scholars like Sheikh Yusuf of Makassar who arrived here in the 17C from Indonesia in chains but whose legacy we still benefit from today, Alhamdulillah. Jazakallah khayr for your works.

Every Sahaba memorised a portion of the Quran. The trend now is all or nothing and most often than not young children. Memorising the Quran in the style of the Sahaba has been lost. Rarely do adults start the process.
