- The PRS HDRX 20 captures the flexibility, power, and balance of the late 60’s British-inspired tone in a lower wattage package. The PRS HDRX 20 features a newly-documented “Authentic Hendrix” Touring Circuit. This circuit is heavily inspired by one of Hendrix’s personal amps, purportedly used at Woodstock, which Paul Reed Smith and PRS Amp Designer Doug Sewell were able to study in 2018.
Designed to push the high-end so it is very clear, but not so much that it’s harsh, the PRS HDRX shines without glaring and allows for aggression that can be backed off for smooth, sweet tones. The PRS HDRX 20 is driven by two 5881 power tubes. Chosen for their lower power, smaller size, and organic voice, the 5881 tubes bring thick but articulate tone that drives well and breaks up beautifully in this lower-wattage amp.

Finally! A proper low wattage plexi clone for under 1k. This is like the perfect middle ground where someone wants something higher quality than the marshall origin series but doesn't want to fork out the stupid high price tag of the studio vintage/classic lineup.
This doesn't sound anything like a Plexi.

Picked up one of these recently from Sweetwater and I have to say that PRS, Doug Sewell, and the team got it right. Having owned and played the 1959slp and 1987x 100watt and 50watters, this amp does them justice and adds just the right bells and whistles without overdoing it at reasonable levels. It's also one of the few tube amps in the 15-20watt range that can pull duty on smaller gigs with a 2x12 cab even with a drummer. It's a very loud 20watts mostly due to a pair of 5881 {6L6 variant} power tubes rather than say EL84's or 6V6's. It's not a metal machine but can be because it takes pedals well indeed. The kicker is the modest price for what you get.

As an Marshall Player (I've had my Vintage Modern Combo, which Iove, for 10Yrs) I can tell it sounds very good, very Hendrixy, it sounds tight and crisp. I was thinking of saving for a Studio Vintage Head (Which is about US$ 1,800) but for US$ 800, IT HAS REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION!..............Good Job PRS!!
I have the VM head yeah its good I also have the SV which is great also i haven't tried the HDRX yet.

What is the material of the 1x12 HDRX cabinet? The PRS website lists poplar ply for the 2x12 and 4x12 configurations, but does not list material for the 1x12.
HDRX20 sounds like something at Home Depot... It sounds great and it's great to see PRS is sticking with tubes vs Fender's ridiculous and overpriced Tone master (lowercase intentional).

Sounds like a great amp but I played one and it sounded sterile in a way. Played a fender pro reverb 1971 sitting across the room and Hendrix was in there

Few days ago I was in the PRS clinic. Paul is a legend and Genius and extremely funny.
He played this amp but with 594 from the shop.
It was not sounded that good.
I own 594 and I know how it sound. It did not sounded as on the end of this video.
This one missed details and bass was not controlled. It was loose.
Here with single coils it does sound better.
Still for me not the best PRS amp. But that is just me.

IMO. I wish you would stop taking production overseas.
Indonesia is probably the best overseas contractors for guitars and amps that adheres to specs. Otherwise the price would be much higher. You can pay for that with the 50 and 100watt versions though. $2900 and $3150 respectively. The 20watt version is the poor mans Plexi at $799.
It's truly ridiculous how many musical product companies use Jimi's name to attempt to sell products - products that do not even come remotely close to having a Jimi Hendrix sound.
In my opinion, no one but Marshall, maybe, deserves the right to go tearing into Jimi's original equipment to try and copy what they find so they can apply their discovery to their own product and then stamp Jimi's name on it, regardless of the end result. It's not right.
This amp sounds nothing like Jimi - not at Woodstock - not anywhere else.
It's like putting Reggie Jackson's or Mike Schmidt's signature on footballs & selling them just because you tore apart an old '77 baseball and discovered it was made of leather and stitching.
I don’t know which Hendrix songs you think of when you say “Hendrix sound”, but the tones he demos for the first 3 minutes are spot-on examples of Hendrix style clean/edge of breakup tones, such as the rhythm part of Bold as Love, Castles Made of Sand, Hey Joe, etc..

No effect loop..ended passing on it...dont care if jimi didnt use one...can add a bypass to the amp...this 20 watter is made in indonesia..where i come from and live..curious where the factory is..in Surabaya area?

Price and no FX loop are bummers to the common musician. People these days are not just slamming a Plexi with a Wah and fuzz face in the front. That said, this amp has a great tone and has a place for quite a few of the purists left.
I love it. You guys release a low cost/high quality 60s strat copy at the beginning of the year and it OUTSOLD every product in the industry. Then you release the amp to go with it at the end of the year. Goddamn geniuses.
Paul Reed Smith is a very intelligent guy. I'm on the fence about his personality so I'm not really a "fan" but he's undeniably intelligent.

I just got this amp yesterday. So any tonal options and killer cleans, edge of breakup and insanely loud when cranked with Plexi drive at the top. Incredible amp for $800!

Great playing, but unfortunately the sound is not even close to Jimi‘s sound. I hear no headroom, the clean sound is thin and does not breathe and always sounds nasal and sniffles.
Such a great tone from such a great player.
There's a used one at my local shop and I have not had the chance to play with it yet. I will check it out this week. I am off all week for T-Giving and Black Friday is in 4 days. I may pull the trigger on this bad boi this week!

I am not well learned on amp design, but seems to me "master volume" is simply "volume" unless you have some sort of pre-master-volume gain control. The bass and treble jumpered volume controls seem a brilliant concept, so well done there.
The dial position graphics really rock to understand this amp as played.

It was an original color when they first came out. Since discontinued for reasons I can’t understand. It’s a great color.
Probably because it resembled too closely to a Strat. PRS came up with a set of finishes not commonly seen on Strats to distinguish the Silver Sky. If you try to picture a classic Strat, you’d think black - another finish not available on the Silver Sky.
@@ilovecartoon100 incorrect, black or onyx was available on the original 4 colors offered horizon( red), onyx ( black), frost( white) and tungsten (grey/silver). Also the first 500 and the second run have a different color or flat finish on the lower cut out

It says something that a company that is not Marshall can make an $800 amp that perfectly recreates Hendrix’s Marshall sound, while Marshall’s offerings don’t come remotely close.
I have this amp and love it. However it acts like a 30 - 40 watts t a 20. It’s loud as F.
Very touch sensitive and expressive. Works well with drive pedals. I wish they would show the settings used with the 594.

This amp is a weapon. Holy shit what a great piece of kit. I'm running a g12 creamback 75w 112.
Somehow people have mistaken the Hendrix Tone with the John Mayer tone. I'm at the opener of the video all i hear is John Mayer sounds. I'll pass.

Nice sounding amp for $800 if you only want a live amp with no modern wizardry. I’d say a monument to modern technology goes to the Revv D20 before this amp. Two Notes, power soak, different output tube selections. I wish PRS would have made this amp with some or all of those options.
Yep the Revv D20 is hard to beat with those features.
I dont know if i had a lemon or what but my d20 sounded like poo. I DID love using it as the power amp and attenuator for my synergy set up though

I don't hear that "Marshall thing "...maybe if you play the Marshall real quite. But when you say modeled or whatever from a Marshall, I'm looking for that great overdrive/distortion that Marshalls are known for. I have several heads that do the "chime" thing... it's easy to demonstrate articulation at the low settings that you have here. It would be much more impressive if it had great articulation at much higher overdrive/gain settings.
