    That book drove me nuts as a kid. And back in like 2003 when I tried googling it, there was next to NO information on why that thing was there!

    • @SwankyBox
      @SwankyBox  5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      The interesting thing is I didn't actually find the book until returning to the game later on. I don't think I realized I could clip my camera through the wall in that area to see beyond it, so it was twice as baffling when I realized I overlooked something so interesting on my first pass through. It wasn't until a few years later when it caught my eye.

      I had a huge water level fear when I was a kid thanks to watching mom play tomb raider (and get mauled by piranhas) so this and pretty much any early 3d Mario had surprise nightmare fuel all over the place. Oooo boy slowly drowning in the jar frantically looking for coins, the huge eels in every 64 game, most games you can't fight back in the water.... the only ones I weren't terrified of was the OoB fish that eat you in Ratchet and Jaxter :P

    As a kid, I was deathly afraid of Eely Mouth. I don’t know why or how, but I was. However, in recent years I decided to come back to Noki Bay and it’s honestly the best level in my opinion now. It’s one of those levels that just feels so vast and expansive. I kind of want to make like a gmod map for it now.
    Hands down, best level.

      I still suffer from mild ichthyophobia (fear of fish, for me specifically, large fish) so some levels of sunshine as a kid, when that fear was muuuuuch, much worse, just drove me mad. I'd slam that power button if I got out too far in the deep ocean.
      I remember eventually managing to nut up and deal with Eely mouth because I was getting desperate for more shines. I screamed so hard when he'd start trying to suck me up, and...
      Yea, they put the shine sprite's spawn at the WORST spot. After finally chasing him off, making me need to go over the damn pit? No, I wasn't having it.
      Never did that boss ever again. The idea still makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

    Back when I was a kid I was doing shine 2 of Noki Bay for the first time, climbing the cliffside. Just before I reached the blooper, my dad came home with a bag of sweets for me. Inside were some chocolate covered foam bananas. I'd never had those before then. Ever since then, they've been a rare treat for myself and Noki Bay always reminds me of that memory.

    Aww, this was lovely! And what is funny, is that for me it's the other way around. As a kid a was at the beach in France a couple of times and I never was the biggest beach guy. So the level I liked the most in Sunshine was (or is) the one with the least amount of water: Pianta Village. I love how the entire level is like a huge tree house. Exploring the downside with the endless void below felt really frightening. Combined with chapter 3's lava floor the level really gave me the feeling of "yeah, this is the final area. I get it. And I love it". This isn't the only time I fell in love with tree top levels though. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour has a last, 7th set of holes in DK's tree tops and it was just so different to the other locations. I so wanted it to be playable in the championships but sadly it never was. And another one: Tree tops from Spyro 1, even though that began more as a love-hate-relationship. Anyone who played that level as a kid and wanted to get the last dragon knows why. In real life, I was never a climber. I was never at the top of a tree, also due to me being afraid of height (at least when I was younger), so that was a foreign little world that always fascinated me. I guess that's why I really love tree top levels and in particular Pianta Village.

    This used to be my least favorite level in the game (besides Corona Mountain or the Pachinko machine), but I came around to really liking Noki Bay in the last few years when I finally decided to collect all the blue coins to 100% Sunshine. It lead me to scaling all these impressive vertical heights and notice fun little things all over the stage that I used to ignore. When you're searching for those blue coins, it's just you vs. the mountain, and it's very pleasantly serena.

It reminds me a lot of him. I also remember getting this game as a promo with the GameCube and my dad bought it for me. I was so excited. He is gone too. To be a kid again when life was good and your family was here..that's what Sunshine does for me.

    As someone with a similar love for this game, hearing you wax nostalgic about your favorite area in Noki Bay really spoke to me. I've got a similar comfy area in the game I call my own, and you don't even need Action Replay to reach it! For me it's the Blooper surfing area inside the tunnel in Ricco Harbor. If you ignore the timer and don't get on a Blooper, you can explore around it and climb up on the rooftops where there's a wide expanse of flat terrain with no obstacles. It's a comfy place to play around with the game's mechanics and take in scenery that most players never even see.

    Noki Bay is my favorite level too! I always thought it was so beautiful and ethereal. The music is easily my favorite track in the game too, both the above and underwater themes.
    I also really like how the missions you go on in Noki Bay all contribute to one of the few relatively coherent narratives in a Mario level. Most stages just have you searching a landscape for random stars. In Noki Bay, Mario tries multiple ways of solving the problem of the polluted water, eventually has to train to descend into the depths, and finally goes down to fight the eel, followed by what I always interpreted as a sort of celebration during the red coin mission. It's simple, but it's not something you see in Mario games very often.

  • @MJTRadio
    @MJTRadio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was a kid, I skipped past the old Noki's explanation that he was testing out the swim helmet using the bottle. So for years, I just imagined him telling Mario, "THAT'S IT! I'VE FIGURED OUT WHY THE WATER'S GONE MURKY! IT'S THIS BOTTLE! THE SOLUTION IS IN THIS BOTTLE!" like some kind of raving madman.

    The first time I entered Noki Bay I didn't think much about it. However, there was a moment that struck me and stayed with me until today.
    After you defeat the eel, when you go into the water and explore the world below, the last music in the video starts playing. When I saw and heard that for the first time.... it was magic. I forgot I had to collect suns, and simply explored the place in wonder.
    From that moment on, this level became one of my speciale places in videogames.

    So, I lived near New Orleans as a kid. Hurricane Katrina hit, and it was devastating. Everything was gone. We packed up and left before it hit, but it was just a horrible time. My family ended up living in a tiny little trailer in the woods for a while until we could find another place to live. Well, my grandparents ended up getting me a gamecube, and super mario sunshine. Noki bay, and the whole game in general just made me feel better every time I turned it on. I spent hours and hours just sitting in noki bay, walking around and listening to the music. To this day, when I feel really down about something, I always turn to that game. It helps. Not a lot, but just enough to keep going.

    I only recently got to playing this game, so it's not really nostalgia. Noki Bay is an adventure on itself. While most of the other levels are just "another one", Noki Bay feels like the odd one out. It makes perfect use of its size (depth, width, height, multiple areas) and the references to ancient phenomenons make the level really interesting

    It's nice to see Noki Bay getting some appreciation. I'm glad that you're able to see the good in it's verticality, lore, music, and the different feel and atmosphere it gives off that separates it from the other levels.

    This level for me was my Mario nightmare. I spent hours trying to get past the first level and the secret sell level. To be honest it toke me 10 years to beat this game.

    Not sure why, I never liked this area as a kid as much as I liked the others. My favorites were always Sirena Beach and Pianta Village. But now you've got me dying to play the game as a whole again, nostalgia is creeping up on me :D great video!

    I'm the exact opposite as I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia which is located near both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic ocean so access to beaches was never a problem (though I've never been someone who enjoys the outside as I prefer the comfort of being indoors, which is why I enjoy exploring worlds in video games at it allows me to do something that I'm not really fond of actually doing in real life (I never really learned how to swim as I have a fear of water as I'm fully aware of the possibility of drowning and that the ocean is full of things that can kill you (from riptides to poison jellyfish, the occasional shark attack which are far less common than the media would lead you to believe, etc). Video Games let one be adventurous in the safety and comfort of one's own home (that's not to say that going outside and experiencing the real world is a bad thing, its just something that I'm not really interested in doing as I probably wouldn't enjoy the experience outside of a video game).

    I remember the firat time I got to noki bay I was terrified of the water and not knowing what was down there and dispite that I remember so much fun trying to get into all the little rooms along the side of the cliff. But the most terrifying thing in that level was the chicken thing that would punch you back to the bottom.

    Yo! Swanky! I really liked what you said about the game being very beach formal and how ya lived in the countryside. Dude, I feel it. I actually grew up in CA and I’m still in CA. But my cousin lived in the Midwest. We would get together every summer as kids for a few weeks during the summer time. I’d go visit him back in IL and he’d come back with me to visit for a few weeks in the summer in CA. He felt the exact same way. We talk about it all the time. Even now, we’re both nearly 30, but we always get together even still & chill and play our favorite games like in the days of yore. Good share & great video content as always! Super Mario Sunshine was beautiful. Imagine a sequel? Him & I even argue how dope that could be or/also how bad it can be lol

    I didn't like Noki Bay growing up, mainly because it was super difficult to obtain all of the blue coins there. Devoid of Action Replay codes, I really couldn't get everywhere I wanted to because it was just so difficult to traverse the level.

      That's what made the level special. All the shines were easy, but the difficulty was getting to them.
      This is a sharp contrast to Gelato Beach where it's easy to navigate, but every single shine is ball busting hard.

    Noki bay was always personally such a beautifully made/creativley crafted level, the only part that annoyed me was the eel fight, but overall I love this world and its aestetic! Great video as always! Btw, if you ever want to, I would LOOOVE another pixel portals video about DK64! Maybe about Frantic Factory? Crystal Caves? Fungi Forest? Idk I would just love to see you make a Pixel Portals on the game!😁

    Could you do a video on ocarina of time's secret colored gauntlets
    It's been an obscured and debated topic in the zelda community because people still believe they are not real but i managed to unlock them even in the 3ds remake having solid proof its real and even managed to make it to the new version, i would love for people to know that there is still new stuff to find in an old game
