  • Jo Koy has been putting on in the comedy space for years and while his place in entertainment and stand-up has already been solidified, his next career venture is something that has been a part of his passion for as long as he can remember.
Stopping through the Power 106 studios to speak with Power Mornings co-hosts Letty and Teddy Mora, Koy discusses his come up in the comedy game as a young father to now being behind his own ABC pilot. Jo is no stranger to sharing his life’s experiences as a part of his stand-up act, with many sets involving stories about his son and their evolving relationship. As his “Funny Is Funny” World Tour has picked back after, following the pandemic, Koy admits that his son has helped curate special moments in his stand-up show.
As Koy is readying a new ABC pilot, ’Josep,’ Jo details why the opportunity is so important for the comedian as he works to have Filipino representation in television and share the stories of so many people like him.
Jo goes on to speak on his relationship with fellow comedian Chelsea Handler, dealing with the insecurities of dating, and much more.

“Pilipino” is not an accent if you’re speaking in Tagalog. It’s is actually the proper way of saying it in our language and dialects. If you’re speaking in english you would say “Filipino” instead of “Pilipino”.

Mexican and Filipinos. "Spanish" pertains to Spain NOT Mexico. The country name of the "Philippines" came from the name of Rey [King] "Felipe" of Spain: "Filipinas." The Philippines was occupied by Spain for 400 years. You can say that we are as "hispanic" as any country that has been conqured and occupied by Spain down South America and all the other countries Spaim occupied.

We also can relate because of culture. Growing up, religion, being poor. And look at my name just as he said. We have Spanish last names. Lol. @@jocelynpena825 I'm Mexican and I have a fiancée that lives in Cebu, Philippines and I've visited there seven times now, just got back from my last trip a couple of weeks ago.
I get a kick when I pronounce the days of the week, numbers and other words in Spanish that I hear used in Visaya/Cebuano and the people say " oh, you speak Visaya!".
There are also a lot of dishes that are called the same name, but prepared differently, I even saw what I thought were tamales, but turned out they are called pintos, wrapped in corn husks and shaped like a tamale, but it was sweet with no meat.
A lot of times when I'm there I feel like I'm in Mexico. I've read that when both countries were under Spanish rule there was a shipping route between Acapulco and Manila and many Mexican sailors stayed to live in the Philippines and Filipinos in Mexico.

For me, even if it was a white person who said Pilipino in Filipino accent I wouldn't get offended instantly. For me it's more about the energy of the person or the intention behind it, not the color of their skin, not their race, not their ethnicity. It's so easy to differentiate a person who's mocking you or belittling you versus a person who's just sharing a good time together with you.

Filipino language, Filipino people, Pinoy people, Pinoy language, Pilipino people, Pilipino language, dialect, etc. You can say it however you want wherever you are actually as long as you don't make fun of it. Get it? USA is full of stupid stuff right now and very sensitive. Everything is racist this and that. Those two radio host are stupid and represent what's happening in the USA right now.

Archaelogists found out that America and Asia was once connected. That is exactly why the native Americans, mexicans etc got huge physical similarities with the south asian people.

Jokoy is Jokoy...real comedian and talks reality in Filipino heritage which we should not be ashamed of because he is right...we are combination of races and we are beautiful...smart and gifted. Having all these mix..we represent Philippines as land of many talents..wide variety of food that we learned from different cultures and most of all exotic and modern Philippines. PROUD OF MYSELF AS ONE. Dont be a hypocrite. Dont be ashamed. We are better than most of other countries. We all speak English...not perfect to some because of accents but its English.

Jo Koy used a Mexican accent and other accents in his shows and people took it as funny, not offensive. So why should any Filipino feel insulted when non-Filipinos would do the Filipino accent? as long as they make it clear that it's just a joke and it's not because they look down on Filipinos then it's all good.

What's racist about saying pilipino? It's the right way to say. America is sometimes getting over the top with sensitivities. People now are afraid to be themselves for fear of offending, and everything is offensive nowadays 🤣🤣

Yes, I am half Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese American Indian and European. But every time I would go to LA, they think I'm Latin and start speaking Spanish, I walk away, because I don't understand them, they get mad and want to fight me. My cousin would explain to them I'm not Hispanic but, Hawaiian. 13:48 I'm like this 200-300lbs Hawaiian will sit on you, slow your roll.

First time hearing about Josep pilot on ABC. I was so excited had to pause this vid and look it up. To my 😫
    found this as of 5/13
“ABC has passed on its half-hour pilot Josep, starring comedian Jo Koy. While ABC is not proceeding with the existing pilot, the network brass want to get a comedy headlined by Koy on the air. The hope is to redevelop the idea, which is built around Koy playing a character loosely based on himself. It is too early to say whether that will happen and whether the current creative team will remain involved but the intent is to stay in business with Koy.” Keep trying Jo, don’t lose hope it’s going to happen. We got your back👍🏼

I dont mind being called Pilipino. Originally, we dont have C, F, V, Z, Q, X in our alphabet. I dont even mind being called a monkey living in a third world country. I feel nothing from that insults.

    • @drx6139
      @drx6139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with your sentiment that people shouldn’t get so offended but I don’t think anyone should be calling you a monkey, IF they’re not close to you. People should still respect you and not degrade you or our country.
