One of the greatest players ever in MLB. Played his entire 20 year career in San Diego when he could have gone other places for a lot more money, especially later in his career when his knees were shot. Also, one of the nicest guys to ever play the game. Never forgot it was the fans that paid his check, not the club owners. Always willing to sign autographs for the fans. I had the privilege of knowing Tony the last 3 years of his career while working on field security for the Padres. He always had a kind word for the guys that worked the field. Great man and sad we lost him so soon.
Eight batting titles Seven times leading the Majors in hits Struck out just 434 times in his career Over 2400 games played for San Diego Tony Gwynn was one of a kind as a lead off hitter.
I remember when the Yankees played San Diego in the world series. You knew the Yankees were going to win. (How often do they lose?). But they interviewed the Yankee players before the start of the World series. And they all pretty much said the same thing. "Hey man, we got Tony Gwynn coming in!"
Never see another like him. He could've made so much more had he tested the market, and THAT'S what sets him apart from the whiny, overpaid spoiled brats playing today. Best pure hitter aside from Teddy Ballgame. R.I.P Anthony Keith Gwynn
Alou couldn't believe he got gunned down at 3rd from deep right center by Tony Gwynn's had to be perfect throw. There's never been anyone that hit the ball harder right at someone for an out more than T. Gwynn
I think part of what made him such a great hitter was just his desire to go for anything and everything he thought was hittable. Most hitters will let a less than ideal pitch go by if they think its likely a ball. Tony didn't want to leave his fate up to the umpire.
Look at 10:46. Tony's teammate wanted to be the hero. He's still walking towards the plate to get ready to hit despite Gwynn driving in the game winning run. There's a mound of Padres celebrating behind the hitter. Weird!
It was the go-ahead run. The game wasn't over yet. And it was Steve Garvey, and he still had an at-bat to worry about. That's how professionals work. Your welcome
What do you mean Steve Garvey had an bat to worry about? Tony Gwynn hit a two-run single to end the ball game... You can clearly hear the announcer say the Padres won the ball game! Padres won 5-3!
Amazing. He was such a pure hitter and a pretty strong man, that he didn’t hit more home runs. Not trying to hit one, but just his swing admins solid contact didn’t produce natural power
What are you talking about ichiro isn't close to Tony gwynn... The man has 3000 hits in Major League baseball in 1500 hits in Japanese professional baseball... You might have to flip a coin to see who's the better hitter.

If Tony Gwynn had been in the game, for each of Nolan Ryan's 7 no hitters. Nolan Ryan would have had 19 one hitters..

He batted 2nd and 3rd btw

RIP Tony. One of the best hitters to ever play the game. And a super nice guy. Class act. Top tier.
Hell of a ball player 👍⚾️
THE BEST HITTER in the modern era. if not of all time.
Anthony Keith "Tony" Gwynn (May 9,1960-June 16,2014) set the standard for contact hitting.⚾🇺🇸
I love how he hits everything and it's not all about exit velocity, seen a lot of people trying to compare Gwen to modern-day hitters you just can't
Never see another like him.

my favorite athlete all time

One of the best contact hitters of all time.
the BEST.
The Goat!
Just amazing @1:40 look at where that pitch was
Almost impossible to reach, especially being a lefty against Randy Johnson. Unbelievable
I like to smoke crack and watch baseballs being hit by baseball bats, on my TV, yeah that’s some fun stuff
Is everything ok?
I like to watch baseball as I, um, 'polish my bat'. Oh yeah!
Best hitter ever!
That 0:52 base knock by Tony is one of the finest base hits ever

Ichiro isn't even close to Gwyn.
He’s amazing in different ways and I love them both!
Why you trying to start shit?
2 different types of hitters. Ichiro belongs in the conversation.
What are you talking about ichiro isn't close to Tony gwynn... The man has 3000 hits in Major League baseball in 1500 hits in Japanese professional baseball... You might have to flip a coin to see who's the better hitter.
@dantemackey7471 you bring up valid points. Both were contact hitters that were both beloved.
Ichiro definitely has him on longevity
Greatest hitter ever and great person too. Don't want to hear about Cobb or Williams, neither faced the pitching he did, especially Cobb.
