*ABOUT THE SYMBOLISM IN THIS VIDEO:* Here is what Madonna explained years and years ago during an interview.
The song is about becoming a mature person that realizes that living a Self Centered life leads to sadness, and that giving your self, your time and your love to others is what brings true happiness. She used a Japanese theme because she felt inspired by the novel *MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA* and because in the Japanese culture there 3 prominent colors with a specific meaning that were perfect to represent 3 important messages in the song.
    1) *BLACK* : Elegance, used by rich people, high society
    2) *RED* : Happiness, passion, love, used for celebrations
    3) *WHITE* : Death, used for mourning
The woman in the *BLACK* kimono represents the Self Centered person who has others take care of HER needs. The plastic bag of water the woman is carrying, represents those material possessions rich people tend to cling to in their pursuit of happiness, without realizing they are actually of very little value. (as valuable as a plastic bag)
The woman in *RED* , represents the person that has come to realize that being detached from the material world is the way to true happiness. She has managed to get rid off of the "plastic bag", so she is now free and able to give to others.
The people in *WHITE* represent modern society. People who are not rich or powerful, (like most of us) but that because of their greed, live in a constant state of mourning and sadness.
In Madonna's case, the event that made her realize she was living a Self Centered kind of life, was giving birth to her first child (Lourdes), and being confronted with the responsibility of raising her with good values. This is what I remember from that interview. It may not be 100% accurate but I hope it helps you understand the song and the video a little better.

Your/her interpretation is spot on. There are other things I recognize as a film grad in there that I thought I might mention.
The wooden box she's in vs the raised platform she's standing on. You're right, the woman in black (look up "Human Design 3rd Line personality" for the 3 white stripes) is the materialistic one on a raised platform. The celebrity. The lady in red is the future happiness one. And the wooden box looks like the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. All the apes gather around the Monolith and it upgrades their consciousness (in the Kubrick film). Madonna is doing the same to "us" regular people. The people in white gather around the box (in which she is dancing those jerky movements) and the get Enlightened. And we see them dancing their own moves (whereas in the beginning, they're all walking in a straight line...like everyone on social media these days 😉).
There's so much more but someone else can add extra stuff. Like the reverse filming (which was also used in Hung Up because: same director).

My God, between the two of you there's not much left to say! Interestingly, though "Nothing Really Matters" is arguably one of Madonna's more obscure videos, its influence is greater than most would estimate: A few years ago, _RuPaul's Drag Race_ did an episode where the mainstage challenge they called _Night of 1000 Madonnas_ wherein the contestants were asked to bring a Madonna-inspired costume and walk it down the runway. It was quite the surprise when more than half of the queens walked out in kimonos in reference to "Nothing Really Matters."
It is, to date, the only artist-specific challenge the show deemed it necessary to attempt a second time the following season.

The dancers are doing Butoh dance! Butoh is an artistic manifestation that was born after the war and constantly seeks to reflect on Japanese culture after the nuclear disaster. Visually it's recognized for the use of erratic and grotesque movements, in many cases repetitive. Butoh themes are usually topics about identity, anxiety, chaos, criticism of postwar society, the construction of gender and sexual orientation. butoh is a danced lament, a writhing in the human condition. One of the visual references of its creators was the half-dead bodies that crawled through the rubble after the detonation of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb

This beautiful and introspective piece came out of her 1998 blockbuster Ray Of Light (ROL) album. The album and this music video was influenced by the birth of her daughter, Lourdes, in 1996 and her spiritual journey into Eastern mysticism in seek of answers and wisdom to guide her. It features elements of Japanese Zen Buddhism, Butoh choreography with its bizarre expressions, and roped flame dancing-that requires high skill to avoid the inherent danger in losing control-a metaphor for her threading at the cutting edge of her iconic career. There is on TH-cam an epic 14-minute remix version of Nothing Really Matters (Vikram Cybercut) done by Talvin Singh with a hypnotic, trance beat of electronic Indian/Hindu tabla drums. Singh collaborated with Madonna in Cyberraga from her 2000 Music album that incorporated ancient Vedic Sanskrit mantras/chants used in Ashtanga Yoga that Madonna was practicing at that time.
Finally, a sequel to this Nothing Really Matters music video, is her haunting 2000-Paradise Not For Me-that reflects similar elements of Japanese culture.

I thought the same thing when I read the title. Honey, I once made the mistake of watching "Bedtime Story" years ago while on hallucinogenics. Even knowing it shot-for-shot by that point, its final image before she wakes (you know the one) lost absolutely none of its WTF factor.😂

She was in a very spiritual mood in Ray of Light, also becoming a mother and that shift of consciousness.

  • @jonathanpessanha2907
    @jonathanpessanha2907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

This is about her “alleged” change with motherhood, where she says she put aside her ego and thinks that all around her and how everything changed with spirituality studies (Kaballah). The symbolism of the elements of nature (earth, water, fire and air) are also present. Inspired by the book Memoirs of a Geisha. This music video inspired the look of the Silent Hill game.

  • @HaydenYouTube
    @HaydenYouTube 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

The video came out 23+ years ago. Discussions of cultural appropriation weren't happening in the mainstream yet. Madonna had recently read the book "Memoirs of a Geisha" and found inspiration in the aesthetic of geishas. Geishas had very prescribed ways of behaving that could feel like being trapped in a box. I interpret that as the wood hallway/box Madonna is in. She's wanting to be outside the box as a geisha/entertainer, but outside the box is a level of madness and desire from hungry ghosts trying to keep her from escaping.

I am from Asia. I know many people from Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc and I am not lying, none of the many people from my and those countries mind artists borrowing from our / their cultures. It's just the regressive left that's creating an issue when there is none . Beware of the real oppressors . Definitely not the artists who borrow from different cultures. Care about real people who are trying to and have been able to reverse social progress. Look up "regressive left"

Cultural appropriation is the way the world works. Everything is cultural appropriation, that's actually how cultures evolve. I don't know when was it that people came up with that, but in that moment the human race had to reach the highest peak in the scale of stupidity 😂

    • @brettmastema7056

Well they were being had, just not as they are now. Many African Americans from the New York gay club circuit feel she stole Vogue from them and cheapened it. I can understand the feeliings they had of taking something that was a subculture to them, something special and unique and they felt like she took it and gave it to the straights as her invention. Although UI dont feel that was what she intended or did. Her bringing that culture to the attention of the masses was such a bold and amazing gesture for the gay movement. She was the first star at that level to give such a spotlight and support publicly behind the gay rights movement which during regan and bush was something people were blaming the gays for AIDS and very few were caring to do anything about addressing the pandemic. Dr Fauci actually was the one who actually stood against the the right wing administration and helped fight AIDS. Madonna had several friends that passed during that time and its annoying when gays try to act like she did little to help.

I remember seeing an interview with Madonna around this time, and the interviewer asked her what she was currently reading and what book would she recommend. The book she recommended was ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, by Arthur Golden…so you can see where she got her inspiration from. I took her recommendation and read it myself. It was excellent!! The film version was terrible though! Another geisha/Japan inspired moment from Madonna is the video backdrop to ‘Paradise (Not for Me)’ from her Drowned World Tour. Madonna has posted it to her TH-cam channel. The song is gorgeous,as are the visuals.

One of my favorite songs of hers. The songs words are powerful and this track has some great beats to dance to. Her originality and art form are in another level. Remember, if you don’t see or hear her music in consequential mode through the years, you probably won’t get her as much. Her growth and pushing her artistic and creative ways probably won’t make sense to you either. Thnx for your continued exploration of the Queen 👑✨💜👑✨💜👑

  • @Neo.Altair
    @Neo.Altair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It was written by Madonna and her frequent collaborator Patrick Leonard. it was inspired by her relationship with her daughter Lourdes, who was then just two years old.
Madonna is trying to explain how her daughter Lourdes doesn’t know about her being famous. She hasn’t got a clue. And it's completely unconditional love, which Madonna had never known because she grew up without a mother (who died of breast cancer when Madonna was 6). Madonna did have her father, but that the love that you get from a mother is quite different. It's had a huge impact on her, as I suppose it has on everyone who has children. Madonna is expressing that when you have children you have to step outside of yourself. You can't sit around feeling sorry for yourself, or feeling like you’re a victim in any way, shape or form. You really look at life from a totally different perspective.
Madonna portrays the character Hatsumomo from the book Memoires of a Geisha, and dresses like a geisha. This was part of a new look for Madonna, as she used a Japanese theme for her 2001 Drowned World tour and for her performance at Grammy Awards in 1999. Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the costumes.
The whole idea of a geisha is a straight metaphor for being an entertainer because, on one hand you're privileged to be a geisha, but on the other hand you're a prisoner and that's how Madonna feels.

At 4:56 of your video, you can see a big wooden box in the back. If you see Madonna's scenes with the red kimono, she's supposedly trapped in that box. A good review of the video said that Madonna is supposedly an artist trapped in that box, she does whatever she likes, dances weirdly, laughs, express every single feeling, she's free. While outside of the box people are going crazy.

Amazing Amazing lyrics, vocals and melody. This song is about making it through the chaos/ reality of life. It is about rebirth. It is about finding happiness in the happiness of others. This avant-garde video is far ahead of its time. That infectious beat takes one to another planet and back.
    "I realize
    That nobody wins
    Something is ending
    And something begins
    Nothing really matters
    Love is all we need
    Everything I give you
    All comes back to me
    Nothing really matters
    Love is all we need
    Everything I give you
    All comes back to me
    Nothing takes the past away
    Like the future
    Nothing makes the darkness go
    Like the light
    You're shelter from the storm
Give me comfort in your arms
    Nothing really matters
    Love is all we need
Everything I give you (Everything I give you)
    All comes back to me"

inspired by novel "Memoirs of Geisha", and that choreography she did was based on Madonna's choice when she was asked in an interview "who did your choreography", she replied "i want to do mine, i don't want anybody tell me how to dance", and i believe she wanted to be a dancer if she didn't became a singer when she was asked in the 80s about her next carrier if she didn't become a dancer.

Madonna performing in the early 80s Dick Clark's American Bandstand was asked what else do you want to do in your career she said "I wanna rule the world".👍
Nowa Tyler & Merrisa it has to do with making it top the top of her career then looking back saying it's not all ab money & fame she adopted several kids ect ect.

My apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere (I posted this on another comment here as well), but I'll share an infamous story from _RuPaul's Drag Race:_
Though "Nothing Really Matters" is arguably one of Madonna's more obscure videos, its influence is greater than most would estimate: A few years ago, _RuPaul's Drag Race_ did an episode where the mainstage challenge they called _Night of 1000 Madonnas_ wherein the contestants were asked to bring a Madonna-inspired costume and walk it down the runway. It was quite the surprise when more than half of the queens walked out in kimonos in reference to "Nothing Really Matters."
It is, to date, the only artist-specific challenge the show deemed it necessary to attempt a second time the following season.

That totally is not the most bizarre. You should check out the Directors Cut of Ameircan Life which was her comment on the war in Iraq that we were about to start.
Justify My Love became the first Video single because it became to adult that MTV refused to air it. Erotica trys but is not as racy.
The video For What It Feels Like for a Girl is AMAZING. The video for Bitch Im Madonna is impressive for the amount of people in it and how it is huge long sections of filming with no cuts and the timing for everything is crazy. Bedtime stories was the most expensive mustic video for when it was made, which cost 5 million and at the time was the cutting edge tech.
I agree that Nothing Really Matters is not the best song from Ray Of Light.

There is a lot of symbolism in the video but the Japanese theme has nothing to do with the song. I think she was reading Memoirs of a Geisha at the time.

Madonna was interested in Japanese culture before most modern artists did.
    Of course.
Because Madonna reinvents herself and is always ahead of the trend while honoring previous trends.

If you think this is Madonna's weirdest video, try with " Bedtime Story"! I mean, I love it, and the video is in the MOMA from New York because is a piece of art! but, not easy to understand....
