Nice job Jan! Good videos. Only thing I can think of doing to improve would be going full screen on one then full screen on the other from time to time to compare. Also perhaps show how to plane the same flight on one then the other step by step. Thanks for the nice video.
Thanks for watching... and thanks for the solid feedback. We have one additional side-by-side that Jan is now working on. And after that we are indeed hoping to do a more apples-to-apples on flight planning. Thx! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
I noticed on this side by side that there was more flight data presented on the ForeFlight (FF) screen that was not on the GarminPilot (GP). I agree that the Sectional View was very cluttered and it was easier to see other traffic on the FF. While Jan did try and match the settings, it appears he was not able to get as nice a view as the FF. Is it possible to set the GP with a similar view as the FF with the flight information across the bottom and decluttered where other traffic is easy to see? Also, there were "Hazard Alerts" on the FF I didn't see on the GP. Was that just because the GP wasn't set for them, and were they real Hazards that having the GP would have not alerted you to? I noticed the "Glide Distance" was considerably different once you got over the lake. The GP had a Direct, Nearest, and Emergency at the top of the screen, but I didn't notice anything similar to FF
Charles, these are all excellent questions! Both Jan and I have also come to the conclusion that our side-to-side footage needs to be augmented with more apples-to-apples comparisons... maybe running the apps on the sim with the same identical tasks. In any event, Jan and I will review your points and see what we can determine. Many thanks for taking the time to highlight these topics. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
To me it seems the passenger ( with FF ) had more time and less distraction to show features than the pilot was able to do on GP. Most of that might be b/c the pilot was busy flying the plane. Mostly the GP app could do something similar ?
Thanks, Mark, as always for watching and checking in. I expect the preference for Sectional or No-Sectional is a visual taste thing. I'm just a no-clutter person. All the best! Wayne
Interesting comparison, Wayne. I use FF primarily because I am used to it although there are some features to GP that I would like to see incorporated in FF. In your comparison I noted that the GP was significantly "de-cluttered" whereas the FF screen was the full VFR sectional chart. Perhaps using the Aeronautical theme on FF would be a better visual comparison.
Jim, thanks for watching and checking in. Actually, in this video ForeFlight is on the right... and was the de-cluttered display... exactly as you suggest, because I was using the Aeronautical map on ForeFlight (and not the cluttered Sectional). Perhaps our labeling of left (Garmin) and right (ForeFlight) wasn't clear and persistence enough. All the best! Wayne
@@GeezerGeekPilot Wayne, sorry... I should have reviewed the video more closely :( In practice I usually use the full VFR sectional (unless I am IFR, of course) rather than the decluttered aeronautical chart mostly because I like the detail and have been using sectionals or WACs for the 55 years I have been flying !! Old dogs and new tricks issue I guess :). Thanks again for the videos!!
Neither Jan nor I fly airliners, so we won't be of much help in that regard. My understanding is that ForeFlight has been selling very well to ATP pilots. Thanks for checking in. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
@@GeezerGeekPilot The Tab S8 or the Tab S8+ from samsung is the only one I would run GP on because it is the only one thay comes close to the iPad performance wise. I am using the GP trial on my phone, not sure how I like it.
@@GeezerGeekPilotThat is absolutely true! I discovered that myself. When went from a Samsung tablet to iPad GP opened up more options and the response was better.

Another great video with amazing sceneries!!! Regarding Foreflight, I now would be quite nervous to fly without it...

Well done.. Just subscribed.
David, glad you enjoyed the video. Welcome! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
I'm another who still prefers the Sectional, even most of the time when flying IFR.

What program do you use to record the screens of your iPads ?
I use the standard iOS feature called Screen Recording... support.apple.com/en-us/HT207935
I'm just not sure Foreflight is worth buying an iPad for. I have all Samsung stuff set up eith ym computer.
Understood. However, it's widely reported that Garmin Pilot on Android is inferior to GP on iPad.
