I have the same story. This album blew up right before 9/11, and we were sitting in the classroom watching on TV. This song was being played on some speakers by a guy in class at the time. Watching the smoke billowing out of the buildings was so surreal, as I was already affected by several tragedies that had occured prior. This whole album became the album of my generation. It was so devistating to me because a school shooting happened in the same high-school a few years prior at Heritage Highshool. I was in boyscouts with the shooter, who was older than me by a few years. So I had a similar situation occur with Linkin Park while I was watching footage in middle school, as a guy I knew was shooting up the highschool. It was an extreme tragedy. They literally made a documentary about our area. My childhood was rough because of a lot of things. My parents never understood why I was the way I was in highschool. I wasn't able to really explain it until I was an adult.
Not really, that was last words of JC on the cross... so was "Father into your hands i commit my spirit". And so was "It is finished" (depends which gospel you choose). So which one was it? xD I believe, one said son, one father and last the HG.
Also I believe every member from SOAD is Armenian though they were born in the U.S.. Their families had escaped the Armenian genocide, an atrocity that to this day the Turkish government refuses to acknowledge as a genocide while the rest of the world does. Many of their songs touch on this topic. Their song Holy Mountains always comes to mind when I think of the genocide, which I also recommend you give a listen to.

The song is called Chop Suey because it was originally called Suicide, but their record label wouldn’t let them name it that. I love this song so much!
If you're asking what kind of guitar Daron is playing in the video, it's an Ibanez Iceman IC100. However, he said he used Gibson SGs and Les Pauls when recording the album. What you're hearing on top at that moment could be a mandolin (though playing it live he uses an electric guitar with a clean tone and sounds pretty close), since they do layer in traditional instruments like that. It gives their music a pretty distinct sound.
If we analyze the Title "Chop suey" if we know the dish itself, it is a mixture of vegetables, meat, seafood especially squid and shrimp and species, and sometimes fishball is put in there and cornstarch as stew thickener. The song's transition in melodies and the lyrics are all mixed up.
Serj Tankian is the lead singers name and he’s actually not religious in your typical way. He doesn’t believe in organized religion. Funny enough, he believes in “the spirit that moves through all things” and that’s a lyric on the song science which is on the toxicity album

I was 9 years old when this came out and when 9/11 happened and I remember it so clearly because MHZ was the one station on my tv that wasn’t playing 9/11 news (they played music videos). This song got blacklisted from radio stations because of the line about “self righteous suicide” in light of the terrorist attacks. In reality though, I read that the band intended for this song to be about the hypocrisy of judging people for taking their own lives (condemning the act as self righteous) whereas if someone dies in a car accident, they don’t get judged. I believe Serj identifies as transcendentalist. Thanks for the vid! I enjoyed your guy’s commentary. More SOAD vids!
Brooo. She nailed the bible verse. Story goes he couldn't think of the break down, the lyrical 8th section while they were recording. Rick Rubin said lets take a break, they all went back to Ricks house. Rick told Serj to take a book from his library (which apparently is really big). Then he told him open it, then point to a line and that's what Serj did which just happened to be Luke 23:46 in the bible. Serj was blown away at how well it fit into the song and they rolled with it. It had nothing to do with the "original" version of the song. It just happened to fit in well with the "how people judge others deaths" vibe. Crazy how the world works sometimes :D Crazy she pulled that out.

The additional striking verses are "Trust In My, Self Righteous Suicide", " I Cry When Angels Deserve To Die".. Almost has an air of 'Mocking' to it which is disconcerting to put it 'Lightly'...
Your wife face compared to yours is so funny. I do think the writer of the lyrics has deeper meaning than just song. I felt it ment about war or politics. I felt this group dealt with social issues.
I am so glad we are over this song! I've been blasting SOAD for years but after this reaction my wife became a fan and had been reciting the lyrics for months. Id wake up day in and out and she would be like " Angels deservvvvee tooooooo diiiiiiiiiieeee".......
The angel they’re referring to is Jesus. They’re saying that, in some schools of thought, he deserved to die...BUT they have a point. It’s NOT an anti Christian, nor a demonic point. Just another take on the story, if you will. They’re calling what he did a “self-righteous suicide.” The idea being, because he knew he was the son of God, he behaved as if he were invincible. He made the assumption that God would not allow him to suffer, much less be murdered by human beings, but he was wrong. His choice to become a martyr, could be defined as being self-righteous. This is not a new theory or take on the story. It’s an opinion that some have, regarding the fact that, while on the cross, Jesus called out, “Father, why have you forsaken me?” i.e. “I know that you’re watching, how are you letting this happen to me?” This clearly indicates that Jesus DID NOT know ahead of time what would happen to him. He certainly didn’t have any idea that he would be resurrected. He made the assumption that his father would surely intervene on his behalf, and not allow his own son to be so brutally murdered. He knew that by defying the Roman government, and refusing to confess to his “crimes” That he would be sentenced to death, thereby essentially causing his own death. That’s why they call it a “suicide.” It becomes “self righteous” The moment you consider that he thought the sentence would never come to pass. That changes everything. ***Would he have done what he did, KNOWING that it would result in his torture and execution???*** ***It’s a big question to ponder, and a shocking question to ponder for some. That’s why it makes for great artistic lyrics. A good song should make you think.

The closest thing I can think of what they mean by "when angle deserves to die"... a moment in life were evil prevails and the "guardian angle" wasnt there... or failed... and something awful happened.... idk... mostly a guestimation lol
5:31 No it was while on the cross, just before death, he cried out - not going to be the correct spelling - "Eloi eloi!Labasabachtami?!" Meaning, if I recall, "My God, my God! Why hast thou gorsaken me?!" I believe shortly before or after He says "Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they have done." and then He gave up the spirit shortly after, if I recall. God bless!
Sadly this song it’s about Armenian genocide happened in 1915 by Muslim Turks to Christian Armenian population in Anatolia this is why it has so many religious references
"Bounce." Its the song that comes on immediately after chop suey on the album. If you've listened to the toxicity repeatedly you get accustomed to singing it right after chop suey.
Serj isn’t religious. The guy is just smart af and enjoys educating himself about things he talks about even if he’ll end up being against it. People know about the “forsaken me” part and they ain’t Christians nor spiritual. They just heard about it or were interested in learning the story behind it.
He grew up religious, all the band members are Armenian. The lyrics themselves refer to Jesus' "self righteous suicide" as in dying on the cross. When the ones who arguably are to blame (the demons/fallen angels) deserve to die. Hence "when angels deserve to die". Then god forsakes him, the ultimate betrayal. It shows the hypocrisy inherent in a lot of religious stories ("there you go creating another fable"). This song is one of many things that made me eventually become agnostic. The writer of this song was clearly once religious and got disillusioned with the whole thing. It's why other than being a great song, this song also really speaks to me.

Serj lives in New Zealand now. Seen him at subway the other day.
Thank you for the video, it was good stuff
I love her reaction to “well his name is Serg” 😬
Late to this reaction, but did not see in the comments.... "Chop Suey" was originally titled "Suicide" but the record label would not allow it, so the band "chopped" the name suicide and renamed it Chop Suey...and, yes, a lot of the anxt of the band is because their Christian grandparents had to flee the Christian genocide in Armenia perpetrated by the then new islamic Turkish regeme
System Of A Down - Mind
Hey im new to the channel. I just want to say hello and that you guys are a great looking couple. Beautiful wife and good looking guy. Will check out more videos
Thank you for the compliments we appreciate it! Please make sure you leave a request if you have one.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT i actually do have a request. With how much you liked linkin park, i want you to check out and react to lost not forgotten by dream theater. Their transitions are insane. It my opinion better than Metallica
that head looks magical dude
Architects - Hereafter, a deep song about the passing of a loved one
Just subscribed! You guys seem like a nice couple. Do you react to any genre? Serj is Armenian.
You should react to Pantera- Walk
We react to anything out of our comfort zone. Im a huge metal fan, so I react to kpop. My wife is into hip hop and Rnb so I'm trying to get her into metal!!!! Lol! Look for pant era- walk soon! Nice thumbnail btw, I love the rattle snake!
This Cat truly loves Rock brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome
Here's the thing guys they're Armenians that's a Christian sect from Turkey there's a lot of controversy in regards to Armenians because a lot of people deny that millions of them died her at least a million during the Holocaust in World War II so they definitely have religious upbringing
Curious if you're a Tool fan. Another "thinking man's" band. Would like to see you and your wife react to Tool - "The Pot" or "Right In Two". 🙂👍🏼
Yes, I love tool. I'm trying to pick a good first time listening for my wife.
Oh first time? Third Eye is a must. jk
Yes and also react to “Vicarious” lyrical video so you can really see the message. It’s an AMAZING song along with “The Pot” by Tool. 💕💯
Maybe not the best to review online, but turn your wife (and you if unfamiliar) onto Wings of Marie. Most touching song ive heard from Tool, and I've been a fan since 92.
God bless!
Sadly this song it’s about Armenian genocide happened in 1915 by Muslim Turks to Christian Armenian population in Anatolia this is why it has so many religious references
try "Jinjer~Pisces".
What was he singing at 4:37??
"Bounce." Its the song that comes on immediately after chop suey on the album. If you've listened to the toxicity repeatedly you get accustomed to singing it right after chop suey.
She nailed it
Me encanta como el men vive la musica
SOAD: "suggestions" "war?" "spiders"
New subscriber! First time seeing you guys and I loved this reaction! Can you react to Soundgarden “The Day I Tried To Live”?
I cry when angels deserve to die. That was the only line from all of the nonsense music I listened to that my dad actually said "that makes sense"
It sounds like chop suey. If chop suey made music. hehe
Chop Suey is actually armenia-american band which is a very Christian country
Great reaction. How about reacting to Spiders?
More System:)
