There is so much space in their music...the space between them. Not that WALL of sound most bands create (which always bothers me after two or three songs) they certainly are one of a kind.
Here is the part in Funky Monks where Rick Rubin coaches Flea through keeping that bassline simple, very interesting: th-cam.com/video/z0tTJ4SakE0/w-d-xo.html
In the book Scar Tissue he said he came up with this song when a friend of his had this really sweet jacket, and when he commented on it she just gave it to him. She said when you have nice stuff the world becomes a better place when you give it away or something to that effect
The backstory of this song is so beautiful. Kiedis' was with Nina Hagen (a punk rock singer) and he saw a leather jacket. He told her it was "really cool" and without even thinking, she said he should keep it. She said it was because "if you have a full closet and someone sees something they like, if you give it to them, the world is a better place." It stuck with Kiedis forever. He said "Every time I'd be thinking 'I have to keep,' I'd remember 'No, you gotta give away instead.'" He said he learned a lot from Nina, who was older than he was, and would impart her wisdom on him. Kiedis said "she was always passing on gems to me, not in a preachy way, just by seizing on opportunities."

I am an old Argentinian man, more into 70s rock and 60s to 80s jazz... but I also miss the 90s. They were great in their own right... and 2020s are so... let's say unfortunate.
My parents weren't even married yet, let alone me being born. So I'm not in your age group, but that doesn't mean I can't listen to awesome music like this!!
I still remember when I heard this the first time. I drove a schoolbus for a short time, it was for children with special needs, a small bus, few kids only and a long long journey each day... Every day one child was allowed the front seat next to the driver and bring a tape with a story or music. Man, was I flashed by this one!!! The kid was in third grade or something. I bought the album next day.
Well mine used to just sit on me and make me feel like I couldn't breath all the while not letting me see it. So I'd count your self kinda lucky mate!!! :)
My dad always said he wished I could know how awesome it was to grow up in the 1950’s. I looked at him deep into his souls and was like “dad. I grew up in the late 80’s early 90’s. Shit was way better than the 1950’s!” Man especially after the Cold War ended with no nuclear war threats. You could literally eat, get drunk, smoke 2 packs a day and fill up your car with gas over a weekend with only $20 in your pocket. Then I was out of the country from 1993/95 and 96-98. I missed those precious years but I’m now catching up on all the movies I missed.
Why does today's artists come off PANSY AF compared to this gem right here with the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS?!!!! THEY BLENDED ALL GENRE'S IN THEIR MUSIC! 90's will FOREVER BE THE MOST INNOVATIVE TIME IN MUSIC... IN HISTORY. PERIODT!!! RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS FOREVER!

There's so much I love about this video. The silver lips, Flea's spiral haircut and horns coming out of his legs, the "crotch-cam", the reversed shiny ribbon dance, the guitar shots at 0:32 and 2:38... it's pure awesomeness.
I remember the first time I heard this song. Was at a party in south of France. A friend coming back from NYC put the record. I knew about RHCP but I was totally smashed out by this tune. The sound was so powerful !! I was a musician by then and could not figure out how they managed to get such a big sound on record. So f&*king sexy too !
Imagine being a 9 year old after school browsing through the channels and witnessing this bizarre mv on MTV lol..I literally freaked out when I first saw this but now 21 years later.. loving them RHCP
As soon as I saw this, I knew they were going into orbit. I know it sounds selfish, but they had been my "favorite band no one else really knew about" for about 2 years- when I saw this, I knew that little status was over. Blood Sugar Sex Magik should be considered a generational standard.
Ha, I did the same with gun n roses. was working in a record shop in 87, picked a random 'tape' (yes 'tape') from the counter shelf to try out a boom box for a customer, out blasts 'welcome to the jungle'; was kind of 'wo ... what's this?' (like I had heard this kind of music before ... yet I hadn't), and for months an months afterwards, I was the only guy on earth (so it felt) who dug this obscure band from LA (I hated hair metal by the way .. but this felt different). Then sweet child hit the air waves and 'wham' it was all on! Funny too, once they got going, saw them on TV for the first time etc I didn't really dig their image at all! ha ... anyways
+April Choyce junior year late for class me and about six other chicks singing the first two bars, at the top of our loungues. we all got write ups. great
3:16 aah yes, perfect scene Anthony: singing, back and forth (?) Flea: fighting his intrusive thoughts John: the rain dance (pun but not) Chad: waves... just waves
This group there's so much that can be said about them, and the truth of the meaning behind the lyrics, it could mean a wide range of things. It's never the same for anybody, and it's all a matter of how you view life, how you view yourself, how you view the universe and where you stand within it. In many ways the lyrics Are on the same level as bob marley, Timeless classic.
Everytime I turned on the TV,this amazing song came on.But being a pre-teen didn't realize what a great song it is,now in my 30s and jamming hard 😍💜💜💜💜💜😂
They’ve aged well, so absolutely, and I usually don’t give “older” bands credit now because most have aged poorly but RHCP have aged great in terms of live performances and still making quality albums!

The whole album is phenomenal. Rick Rubin has a touch.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are my favorite band. I love the creativity they use in their lyrics.
For me too.... absolutely....
I was in high school when this was released. It was on the radio all day. 30 years later still feels modern.

Still listening to this awesome masterpiece in 2024
I still remember when I heard this the first time.
Lol I was in 4th grade and wanted to get the album but it had Explicit Lyrics lol

I've listened to this song at least once a week since I was a preteen and im 36 now and it still hits so hard.
Lol it was posted on TH-cam in 2008, it came out in 1991, I'm 36 as well and remember when it started playing on MTV. So nostalgic.

At least he still got it (in the 1998-2009 era at least), hope he still has plenty of gas in the tank with the next RHCP album.
I was 13 when this video came out. I'm 44 now. It still kicks ass.
I was 10 or 11.
1970-99 what golden age of humanity.

Today's youth is pansy..
Think, baggy jeans and tall tees disappeared by 06.. it's been tight shit since.. this generation of 16-24 yrs old grew up on tight clothes, literally no dominant Rock genre as the last sweeping genre was emo/screamo which ended in 07.. been pop, rap and trap music since.. the participation trophy generation.. weak.. coddled generation..
Nah, 70s was the most innovative. Rap and funk started in the 70s, and the artists RHCP covered, like The Meters and Stevie Wonder, were 70s artists
@James Black who's you guys? My son's are 2 n 1.
@@bigdaddy2343 coming from a 16 year old I never wore tight clothes I was raised like how my parents were and they’re cool and thankfully now at least where I live people my age are now thinking about how stupid tight clothes are and are going back to slightly baggy stuff

***** Not really. I don't really care about rap at all, but I have heard lots of great fast rapping in rock. Such as Primus and RHCP.

What I've got you've got to give it to your mama
What I've got you've got to give it to your pappa
What I've got you've got to give it to your daughter
You do a little dance and then you drink a little water
What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
Reeling with the feeling don't stop continue
Realize I don't want to be a miser
Confide with sly you'll be the wiser
Young blood is the lovin' upriser
How come everybody want to keep it like the kaiser
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a pauper
Greedy little people in a sea of distress
Keep your more to receive your less
Unimpressed by material excess
Love is free love me say hell yes
I'm a low brow but I rock a little know how
No time for the piggies or the hoosegow
Get smart get down with the pow wow
Never been a better time than right now
Bob Marley poet and a prophet
Bob Marley taught me how to off it
Bob Marley walkin' like he talk it
Goodness me can't you see I'm gonna cough it
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Lucky me swimmin' in my ability
Dancin' down on life with agility
Come and drink it up from my fertility
Blessed with a bucket of lucky mobility
My mom I love her 'cause she love me
Long gone are the times when she scrub me
Feelin' good my brother gonna hug me
Drink my juice young love chug-a-lug me
There's a river born to be a giver
Keep you warm won't let you shiver
His heart is never gonna wither
Come on everybody time to deliver
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now

Funny too, once they got going, saw them on TV for the first time etc I didn't really dig their image at all! ha ... anyways
