The Academy of Kiev, with Peter Moghila, Stephen Gavorsky and many others, taught the Immaculate Conception in terms of Latin theology. A confraternity of the Immaculate Conception was established at Polotsk in 1651. The Orthodox members of the confraternity promised to honour the Immaculate Conception of Mary all the days of their life. The Council of Moscow of 1666 [which included the patriarchates of Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria] approved Simeon Polotsky’s book called The Rod of Direction, in which he said: ‘Mary was exempt from original sin from the moment of her conception.’

Orthodox Christian Theology The good thing is that is only your church’s interpretation of Saint Mary. Luckily the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church were entrusted with the Ark of The Covenant (The most conclusive example of His mother in the Old Testament). The oldest Bible in history is also found in Ethiopia because we, while we didn’t establish a church prior to Coptics, Ethiopia was and is historically known as the First Christian Kingdom and Civilization (Reference: Prophecy Psalms 72: 9-10 along with multiple Church sources shows that one of the three wise man has been confirmed Ethiopian, Acts 8 shows Christianity teaching existed in Ethiopia and Aksum Kingdom predates back to BC showing traces of Christianity prior to Armenian Church). Hopefully you can learn from the original information we obtained because before any church ever existed before the New Testament took place, before the Holy Bible was compiled, the the first Christian Kingdom existed, where through their hearts was the law and teachings of God. To dismiss the IC of Saint Mary is to misunderstand Christ’s nature and to deny His capabilities. We just completed the Fast of the Assumption of Mary, so I will ask you like Christ asked the pharisees, which is easier to say, “Your Sins Are Forgiven, or Get Up And Walk”?

‘Ālem actually it does. As the the person is talking about history, I am mentioning the Ethiopians were the first Christian Civilization with the ORIGINAL Christian teachings. These Christian Civilizations go back over 3000 years and before any official Orthodox church was established. As you can see in the book of Acts we were already Christians before disciples Andrew and Matthew came to Ethiopia. So I was telling him how our deep rooted history and knowledge of the IC of Mary can be supported by the original information we obtained thousands of years back. History unlocks everything all Christians, theologians, scientists and philosophers know and respect the credibility of history.

Hello Alem I am not sure what your faith is as I am unsure, but if you are a Coptic, then that is your faith and belief. Nevertheless, I hope you understand I am not referring to the concept’s history but the way the EOTC achieve and reach these hidden mysteries of faith like ተአምር፡ ድርሳናት፡ ግድላት፡ አንድምታ as well as the IC of Saint Mary. These are all brought to light through a set of very strict religious ritual practices that have been passed down throughout Ethiopian Christian history, one being ሱባይ. There are many other hidden methods more clear to our monks when they reach a Holy Level.
Also, I never said EOTC was 3000 years old, I said the first Christian Kingdom dates back to 3000 in Ethiopia.
Secondly, the concept was accepted in Ethiopia before Zera Yacob.
Also all Bible translations say “Ethiopian” including the Coptic Bible not Nubian.

And if other churches decide to reject the IC of Saint Mary that is their loss. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church will however continue to cherish and revere her purity and her Immaculate Conception.

What I’m not clear on though is how it can be proposed that Mary was cleansed of original sin at the annunciation but then still died of necessity - if dying of necessity is a result of original sin and Mary no longer had original sin after the annunciation, how could she die of necessity?

    • @OrthodoxChristianTheology
      @OrthodoxChristianTheology  ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly I think the fathers are reporting disparate hagiographic details without reconciliation. She had original sin and was subject to death, yet through holiness overcame the necessity of death and so to partake in the life of Christ she voluntarily died. The reconciliation is not given to us by the saints. I favor that subjection to death is a principle according to her condition apart from grace, so it is true in effect. Yet, she had attained a perfect spiritual state so grace enabled her voluntary death.

    • @Gruenders

@@OrthodoxChristianTheology Gotcha. Have you found any fathers saying either 1) she was conceived in the Catholic IC state, or 2) she was conceived in a baptized (but still subject to the effects of original sin) state?
Since she’s the icon of the Church, and you are reborn into the Church into a state of grace at baptism, it seems to make sense to me that she would be born/conceived in a baptized state herself maybe. But her being free from the effects of original sin, including even bodily, like the IC proposes seems somewhat out of left field.

      - *30 differences between COPTIC & EOTC* -
Purpose: This was written to educate and give Ethiopian believers a BETTER understanding of the origin of their faith, history and tradition and answer why the EOTC is quite different from other orthodoxies. This should not to be interpreted in the wrong way, unity is important but so is transparency.
Author: As an Ethiopian Orthodox servant and having attended several Coptic liturgies, and from theological research on both churches, I can tell you we the EOTC have SO MANY differences.
✅ ALL ITEMS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED!
      *Dogma Differences*
      1. We believe that Saint Mary was born without original sin
      2. We believe that Saint Mary has NO fallen nature no sin or nature to sin after birth as well
      *Jewish Practices*
Matt 5:17 - “I did not come to abolish the Law”
      1. We have Ark Processions year-round
      2. We abstain from all unclean food (Halal, pork, shrimp, crab, etc)
      3. We do no enter church if we are unclean (men and women)
      4. We wear all white shawls (Netelas) as a symbol of Christ’s Resurrection and spiritual purity
      5. We have a shoeless entry (not just during communion)
      6. We abstain from any modern instruments (piano, guitar, etc)
      7. We have 81 books in the Bible (Coptics have 74)
      8. We go of Halachic Jewish Time (Fasting entry and exits are based of our sun and star movements (Twilight) and our hours are reversed (12=6, 9=3)
      9. We observe Friday evening and Saturday as the Sabbath (in addition to Sunday)
      10. Women after giving birth have to wait 40 days or 80 days to enter church. ( Lev 12)
      *EOTC Belief System*
      1. We abstain from any fish on fasting days (It is a meat - 1 Cor 15:39)
      2. We eat starting at 3pm on fasting days
      3. We fast 292 days of the year (including Tsige & Pagume Fast)
      4. Women are not allowed to wear pants only ankle length dresses (Deut 22:5)
      5. We never imprint (wear) icons of saints on clergical or any other clothes
      6. We have a 2 or more priest liturgy system (Coptics have 1)
      7. We close curtains during significant moments
      8. To be a Deacon you must be a unmarried virgin
      9. We have 14 liturgies (Coptics have 3)
      10. We celebrate all 33 feasts for Saint Mary and all 18 feasts of Jesus with millions in attendance year round
      11. We have Hymnaries (Mahlet) 4-10 hours short version and 24-48 hours long on Epiphany and Horologions (Sa’tat)
      12. We perform year- round Subae’s (7 days of no food or water)
      13. Believers have (Full Body - Holy Water) services year round for healing and forgiveness of sin
      14. We do not eat bread inside church
      15. Only men can pour Holy Water
      16. The Holy Trinity Icon is always depicted (Coptics use mostly Jesus and the 4 creatures of the Gospel)
      17. We have to fast 18 hours to take communion (3 days of no intercourse)
      18. We prohibit any use of contraceptives or birth control (Genesis 38:6-11)
      *Explanation:*
While we didn’t establish a church prior to Coptics, Ethiopia was and is historically known as the First Christian Kingdom and Civilization (Reference: Prophecy Psalms 72: 9-10 along with multiple Church sources shows that one of the three wise man has been confirmed Ethiopian, Acts 8 shows Christianity teaching existed in Ethiopia and Aksum Kingdom predates back to BC showing traces of Christianity prior to Armenian Church). And so while we the EOTC are labeled “oriental” with our sister churches, we are the only orthodox nation who incorporate 4000 year old Jewish customs (Judeo-Christianity) and Jewish forms of worship and tradition into our faith. The reason for this is because we were the only Orthodox country to convert from Christianity’s former faith so we hold very sacred information or the “original link” that drives our Christian faith to be more conservative or allows us to have more divine levels of worship (Ark Processions year round, Hymnaries (Mahlet), (Horologions (Sa’tat), Subae (7 days of no food or water), Year round Full Body Holy Water Services, all white clothing, shoeless entry, restraining from unclean meat and 292 days of fasting to name a few all makes our orthodoxy unique different and special in every way compared to all other oriental and eastern orthodoxies but most importantly and evidently seen is our love of Saint Mary. Ethiopia is in fact called the Land of Mary.
Thank you have a nice day.
      Blessings in Christ

The truth is you probably don’t know what is worshipping nor what is an idol. An image of the True God is not God indeed but can’t be an idol either. If it represents Christ with due respect and correctly it conveys information about Him, as well as His grace like everything that is blessed by Him. As do the Holy Bible, but kissing the Bible isn’t an act of idolatry for you, is it ?

So it's easy to think of Mary (as well as ourselves being subject to death and that's all. Please help me here. I am Orthodox. I have heard different things about the immaculate conception. Did Augustine say, or not say or write that sexual intercourse was the mechanism by which the stain of original sin was passed on from generation to generation? Do the Catholics hold that we inherit ancestral guilt of original sin, a stain on the soul, or a fallen human nature/impediment to knowing God's will, or something else, or some combination?
Do Roman Catholics believe that the guilt of original sin is passed on by sexual intercourse? Do they believe that Mary's parents conceived her without normal physical sexual intercourse but by some kind of miraculous insemination? Do Catholics hold that Mary did not have fallen human nature at all?
In reality the most common answer I get from Orthodox about the Immaculate Conception of Mary is that we actually believe it because we don't believe in the kind of "non-immaculate" nature of conceptions in general that Roman Catholics do.

Furthermore in Luke 1:46-47 Mary calls on "God her Saviour" and Romans 3:23 tells us "ALL have fallen short of the glory of God", not once do we see the mention of anyone sinless but our Lord and Saviour who took on flesh. 15. Only men can pour Holy Water
      16. The Holy Trinity Icon is always depicted (Coptics use mostly Jesus and the 4 creatures of the Gospel)

And so while we the EOTC are labeled “oriental” with our sister churches, we are the only orthodox nation who incorporate 4000 year old Jewish customs (Judeo-Christianity) and Jewish forms of worship and tradition into our faith making us really a third type of Orthodox. The reason for this is because we were the only Orthodox country to convert from Jewish to Christian so we hold very sacred information or the “original link” that drives our Christian faith to be more conservative or allows us to have more divine levels of worship (Ark Processions year round, Hymnaries (Mahlet), (Horologions (Sa’tat), Subae (7 days of no food or water), constant baptism, all white clothing, shoeless entry, restraining from pork and any other unclean meat and 296 days of fasting to name a few all makes our orthodoxy unique different and special in every way compared to all other oriental and eastern orthodoxies but most importantly and evidently seen is our love of Saint Mary. Jesus did not have to be offered in the Temple, nor did Mary have to offer her two turtle doves because they were both pure from birth. *They submitted to the Law out of humility and deference to the Father*
What next? Are we going to say Jesus is not God because He came in human form or that because He knelt and prayed, or that because He was Baptized that it was for the “remission of sin” ? Saint Mary and Jesus were devoted Jews who regardless of their nature followed the Laws.

We romans have forgotten what we meant by the immaculate conception of Mary and this is the great source of scandal and division for orthodoxy. The belief in the Immaculate conception referred to the soul of Mary being preserved from the stain of sin. This idea was developed in the following context: the doctrine of insoulment and the inheritance of original sin through generation. Insoulment is the doctrine which teaches that every soul is created by God and not the product of simple human mechanisms. Thus a body (flesh) is created (in modern terms we would say this happen when the egg is fertilized) and then God breath or creates a soul inside of this body. Original sin is transmitted from Adam and Eve to his descendants through their bodies, to the bodies of those generated by them and then this inherited fallen flesh being united to its soul stains or pierces the soul (which God creates without sin, as sin is not God's creation) with wickedness, or with the exile from paradise, or the lack of original justice, or original sin. The Mother of God, according to the Romans, inherited a mortal and fallen flesh subject to passions and evil desires, but in the moment of her conception, by special grace her soul was preserved into the original justice in which God creates all of us. So from the beginning of her existence, the soul of the Theotokos was open to the deifying grace that was to come, empowering her with the needed freedom to synergetically cooperate with God in the incarnation. However, she remained subject to life in a fallen flesh and in doing so gained merit before God (that's why we even sing in Easter that she merited to conceived Christ). It was until the incarnation that the Theotokos was made free from concupiscence (the evil disorder of the bodily passions) and ergo achieved apatheia and it was until her resurrection from the dead that she was made free from the mortality and all the consequences of a fallen flesh. This was the doctrine of the bishops of the Vatican I, who confirmed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception and it was the doctrine of the mariologists of that time. It's now that many Catholics straying from orthodoxy teach that Mary was free from concupiscence or not subject to death wrongly understanding to what the doctrine refers or how original sin is even transmitted.

Private revelations sound wonderfully spiritual but nevertheless, are binding only on those who receive them. Public revelation, which we are bound to believe was completed and concluded, with the death of the last apostle so Lourdes, Fatima etc do not have to be believed and certainly not used as a yardstick for religious doctrine.

Of course, this is Orthodox ERROR. Mary did not have original sin. God would never have created any kind of impurity in the person chosen to be the mother of His Son. She never could have been a temple for the creation of the Son of God without having been a perfect vessel .It takes a while to get the story straight. This commentator keeps referring to "the saints", but there are numerous saints which the Orthodox do not accept, who have revealed and proven the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Mary herself has told us this, However the Orthodox do not accept this, either. Mary WAS ASSUMED BODILY INTO HEAVEN, she did not simply go to "sleep". Bernadette Soubirous is an incorruptible saint who spoke to the Blessed Virgin, who told her that she was the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Lourdes, France is proof that the Blessed Virgin was there and there have been thousands of miracles. The Orthodox Churches have been in disarray for centuries. They are "stuck in the mud", so to speak and surely do not recognize the miracles of Fatima, either. Actually, they do not acknowledge the numerous times throughout the centuries, when the Blessed Virgin appeared throughout the history of the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Greek Orthodox are still so set in their arrogant beliefs that they do not even recognize any baptisms other than their own! In reality there are 2.3 billion Christians throughout the world, and only less than 300 million are the so-called "Orthodox" who have numerous patriarchs and do not agree on anything!! Communism spread rapidly throughout the Orthodox countries while Roman Catholic and American Christians were able to fight it off. The Greek Patriarch in Istanbul has only 1200 followers there, in a city of 14 million! Other Christians there are between 200-300,00! When the Warning from God comes, all will be shown the truth of the Roman Catholic faith. It will be followed by a Great Miracle. Those who do not accept the truth, await the Great Tribulation. What is your choice? I am so glad that the Blessed Virgin speaks to us and that she left her image on earth in Mexico, as Christ did on the Holy Shroud of Turin. Of course, the Orthodox deny this. Too bad for you!

Gail Karrer: the "clarification" that is posed by Roman Catholic Mariological apologia, that "the Immaculate Conception DOES NOT signify a Virgin Birth", is, to Orthodox understanding, demonic casuistry. No one need spell it out; or, for that matter, that Christ's Conception (unlike His Mother's) was IMMACULATE AND THEREFORE VIRGINAL! That the Theotokos was free of sin, the Orthodox have always taught; that She Herself was conceived Immaculately - NEVER!

and yet you mention none of the corruption in Rome or the latest allegations of Pope Francis' history of sodomy, whilst in Argentina?
