    There have been a few instances in recent history of legendary DH race runs done without a chain. Aaron Gwin's win in Leogang, Rachel Atherton's 3rd place in Fort William or Neko Mulally's Career Best of 4th at Hafjell... but just how much difference does it make to the bike when riding chainless and can Neil recreate a similar result with a chain and just by pumping in this test?

    I think it's the ability to go from pumping to pedaling or pedaling to pumping that is the real challenge in improving your speed and flow. Would like to see a third ride in which you do both and see the result...

    Pretty likely you're always going to need to pedal or pump at different sections, depending on the terrain. Peeps need to find a BMX track or a pump track and practice pumping if they've not done it very often. On a BMX track you need both.

    Obviously the “fastest” results will incorporate both. Pump when you can’t pedal, pedal when you can’t pump. I’d also like to point out that while you can reasonably eliminate pedaling from the pumping run, you did not eliminate pumping from the pedaling run. You could see in the video you still pumped out if corners and when you did jumps.

    Pumping for sure generates speed but it also takes a lot of energy to do so, at least in my opinion. Go to a pump track and pump one or 2 laps and you will be out of breath! :)

  • @Duncan23
    @Duncan23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a an ex-skater i kinda expected this result, with good technique and timing pumping can get you all the speed you need in most cases. I find the trickiest skill to learn is when to pump and when to pedal but i guess that will come with time and experience.

    I often find myself pumping and then have to start braking behind riders thats are just pedaling on trails.. i catch them to fast and then just coasting along pumping while they pedal flat out.

  • @partyongarth0
    @partyongarth0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah but you didn’t get many pedal strokes in on the first run because you were too busy tackling obstacles and didn’t want to risk pedal striking. If you’d have pedalled between all those tree stumps and around berms you’d only have ended up having to brake more. Pedalling obviously only helps on open straight sections. I think the only thing this video proves is that the garmin flow score is complete rubbish (other GPS devices are available).

  • @wavewaker2

  • @Tin_Town

  • @emphtk5424

    I guess pumping makes you faster ‘cause you can actually take “advantage” of the terrain as it was a start roller, example, push down on a drop, a root, etc, and you will accelerate more than if you just let yourself fall onto the receiver, or just roll the root, but i guess top racers do pedal as maniacs on some parts of the track. That’s why Neil says for pumping you need to read more the terrain, to know what little parts can make you accelerate more if you push your body down on them!! Keep on the nice work guys! Greetings from Mexico!!

    if timing is ended by pushing a button then just slight difference in that when you push it might make all the difference in the results.
    only proper way to do this is the way the pros do it,a start gate, so bike is at the exact same spot always, and a thing on the fork to record the time, this eliminates all thee possible inaccuracies that can happen.
