    I got a Benq TH685i and followed your procedure and oddly it worked. The lamp hours for this projector are 235 and it can run up to 4,000 at normal life. My question is why did that fix it? An what causes that lamp to fail like that?

    thanks sweet ,,, worked for me too :) ,, and i was wondering how can a hid lamp develop a short circuit , i searched the web for an answer but didnt find any ... i guess its a thermal protection (thermostat) and need to be reset .. dusty filters and fans can cause this and it could happen again also if the lamp life is ending.

    Didn't expect it to work for me, mine had 750 lamp hour, but broke the other day. Bought multimeter yesterday just to try this fix, I banged it with my little screw driver, it didn't work at first, I grabbed a bigger plastic object and banged couple of times, then it magically fixed the lamp. Mine was Epson Home Cinema 2250.

    Hi, I have hitahi cp-cw300wn.
    O wathed movie on the ceiling when projector suddenly turned off. Just goed blank, power stopped, ventilation stopped. Died somehow.
    Earlier i settled projector upright to watch a film on the ceiling. I created some small gap u der it so it could breath. Gap was 1.5cm from the floor with size of projector itself. I simply settled it on two books and created this gap.
    Now device does not turn on. Only reaction is visoble when plugging device to power. Power and temp lights blinked on right during plugging and device remain "dead". Got any solutions to recommend? I would repair it but i'm not sure what to do with it.
    Any idea? Thanks!
    And good day!

    1) Has anyone had issues shorting of other components after the DIY repair in the video?
    2) Has anyone opted to replace the bulb with an LED setup, instead?
    I have a great Vivitek 2D-3D DLP projector that if it wasn't for the $150 bulb that needs to be replaced, it is still a great projector. I am thinking of converting it to an LED light.

      yeah works fine. Just break open a 240V LED armature and jam that in there. Looks like most projectors have jumpers to stop trying to figure out if the bulb works

    The projector lamp is a high pressure mercry HQI lamp and in a healthy working condition even when brand new it should show open circuit. This guy is talking utter nonsense in here.

    • @OriginalMergatroid
      @OriginalMergatroid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He showed he was testing the lamp and it was shorted. Then he banged on it and the short went away, showing an open circuit. My question is, how could you ever trust this lamp again? Also, a shorted lamp can blow a ballast board and a power supply board (I['m working on one right now where this exact thing happened). I would never use a lamp this happened to.

  • @linussamani3791
    @linussamani3791 ปีที่แล้ว

    It might work, but you does not re-install in the projector as a proof. The reading on your multimeter also shows 1, which means discontinuity. Continuity should have a value close to zero. The zero at the beginning and the beep could mean continuity. Correct me if am wrong. My projector's lamp does not work as well but i am worried this temporary fix may bring further problems than just the lamp itself.

      then you have to call a tech in India directly , be put n hold, and listen to sitar music ( which actually is pretty good)

  • @OriginalMergatroid
    @OriginalMergatroid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is not a very smart thing to do.
    If your lamp is shorted, it can blow your ballast board and your power supply board. One of our customers bought a lamp from Amazon, a cheap POS, and it blew his ballast and his power board. I did not know he had bought a cheap POS lamp, and I installed new ballast board and new power board, and it blew the new parts too. Since it was an expensive projector, we ordered an OEM lamp, and replaced the parts again and it works fine now. I would never reuse a lamp that tests shorted. Do this at your own risk.

      Mergatroid Mania this is my vivitek model number D557wh. My projector turns on but the bulb dosnt. I thought you cant check a projector bulb with an ohm meter? How can I troubleshoot the igniter or the bulb .

    • @OriginalMergatroid
      @OriginalMergatroid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can check a lamp for a dead short using an ohmmeter (that is, a short to DC) but you cannot check anything else with a meter. I have seen cheap lamps arc to ground and blow the ballast board. In the case in this video, if the lamp had of arced after his "repair" it could have blown the ballast board. Perhaps people in some areas may think it's worth the risk, but I am working on clients projectors and will not risk blowing an expensive board to save a cheap lamp. The only way to troubleshoot this is by substitution.

    • @otallono
      @otallono 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      most of the time the cheap lamps on amazon are exactly the same, it's sometimes a hit or miss but more often than not you'll get a good one. There's no reason to suggest someone to spend $270 more than they have to on a projector lamp. I've had oem lamps last a couple months or flicker. So oem lamps are also hit or miss. Yeah, I'll spend the $30 instead of $300. Just read the reviews, it's amazing when you see people buying the lamp that doesn't have any reviews or poor reviews. Buying the one with the best reviews even if it's 4 star, you'll have a better chance at getting a good lamp. Again, oem lamps can also be bad.

    • @billfry8779
      @billfry8779 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. Yeah this wasn't the best way to do a reset an thermal locked bulb, but its common.
      2. Unless a huge unprotected surge arcs to the machine, no PCB in the history of the world has, "blown". Not to say a passive component didnt pop due to improper load.
      Videos like this, and comments like yours do not help actually educate people in this situation.
      When buying bulbs be sure to check the small details. Do your research!!. As with anything under repair, a slight change in temp, ohm, or mAh outside operating specs can harm a device on a long enough timeline. There is also a chance it could be fine, forever. #RightToRepair
