Little Rock, Arkansas - Arkansas State Police Trooper Byrd stopped a Nissan Sentra driver for speeding and having a fictitious license plate. The vehicle suddenly took off from the traffic stop and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended near Baptist Hospital where the driver exited the vehicle and refused to comply with Trooper Byrd. After a brief struggle, the driver fled again, this time on foot, towards an apartment complex where Trp. Byrd and backup units took the driver into custody. A handgun was found in the suspect's vehicle. He was transported to the Pulaski County Regional Detention Center to await charges.

I may be in the minority, but I don't take any issue with Trooper Byrd walking in front of the vehicle during the initial stop. He told the driver to keep his hands on the wheel (so he couldn't put the car into drive) and pointed his flashlight at the driver, watching him the whole time. I'm sure he knew the risks, but he wouldn't have been able to see what the driver was doing if he walked around the back of the vehicle. This guy could have pulled out that gun and been firing by the time Byrd reached the driver's side.

Nothing wrong with critiquing Trooper Byrds actions. Creative criticism is a great tool for learning. However we shouldn't be hard on anyone if mistakes are made. Everyone learns by doing and sometimes mistakes are made...use that to learn better ways. He did take added risk going in front of the sus vehicle but he had eyes on whole time. Going the deemed safer route around back could have gotten officer shot. Bouncing off a hood is safer in my opinion too. Remember Byrd is quick too :)

police tactics evolve over time. It’s much more acceptable now, because a driver can throw the car in reverse just as much as they can go forward. At least if you’re in front of the car you can see the hands and sudden movements rather than walking behind the car where you can’t see anything and you can get pinned between their car and your car. Sincerely, a cop who is also adapting to evolving tactics.
