The true hack for this type of grass is getting you a lighter and burning it. I started doing this two years ago , what a game changer! The fire does get pretty big/intense but doesn't last long. I even tried it on my pink mullly grass last year and it worked great too.

This does work. Just be sure it's away from the house. Grass is C4 photosynthesis. They can pack on more hydrocarbons and burn faster. This explains what you said about it burns hot.

@@Dr.Warren luckily mine is away from the house however the heat/flames burnt my beautiful sky pencil Holly. I thought it was a gonner because it lost all leaves but that sucker came back and looks perfect, that was close. Now I wrap it with this thick padding material I got from work.

@@randyman8984hello! How mature have your sky pencils grown?
I was formerly zone 5b but now considered 6 here in Upstate NY and planted some along my driveway.
Were they a fast grower for you and did deer 🦌 ever nibble on yours? Thanks!

@@MariMari-vq8hl they are very slow growers. I bought 4 3 yrs ago. I put three along the foundation of my house and they're really taking their time. However the one I put out my landscape that I accidentally burnt is almost double the size of the three. However the area I planted it the soil is very rich, everything I plant there is thriving.. and I don't have problems with deer.

@@randyman8984 Got it! Amend my soil with some extra goodness so they can grow taller/wider before I end up moving and not seeing them to their maturity 😂 I really was attracted to their columnar aesthetic as I was trying to choose a bit more “modern looking plants” for our yard

Could you share what type of grass you have? I bought some clearance plants just titled “maiden grass” at Lowe’s but not sure how tall/wide it will grow? I was going to use it to make some privacy border-like separation between my neighbors so trying to see how far into my property line I’d need to plant it in anticipation for its future growth

These are maiden grass. I also have pink muley grass and zebra grass in my yard. Yours should get 6-8 ft tall and 4-5 ft wide.

They are also very easy to divide so you can easily make a full screen by transplanting.

I have been told you shouldn't cut straight across because water will sit in the plant and cause it to rot. Is there any truth to that? We get quite a bit of rain.

I've been doing it for 30ish years and never had an issue.

Great tips ! May I ask why you did not cut it closer to the ground ? We are going to add tall grasses near our covered deck, and I am looking into how to care for them.

No particular reason other than that is where the trimmer felt comfortable. 🤣. You can definitely go lower.

Try a slip knot next time! You'll save yourself some time struggling with getting it tight.

Yes, I needed to shut up for 15 seconds and just focus on tying a knot. I fish several times a month and have tied thousands of knots. You think I could talk and tie at the same time. 😂😂🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️.

In wet years they tend to grow to tall and fall over.Do you prune midspring to regulate height so that doesn't happen?

This is an interesting concept I haven't thought about. I imagine you could as long as it's before the plumage stocks emerge.
